In 1960 Venezuela was the third wealthiest country per capita in the World. It had medical care that was envied by all, it took all of 20 years for your Socialism to turn it into the Hellhole of today. Adults and children of the Socialist Worker Bee class starving while the Socialist Elite and Military wallow in luxury and enjoy full bellies.............yeah.......taking over the world.

Enjoy your world.

Venezuela has never been a socialist democracy Eye, so your statement dies another death over something that you can't understand. ;-)

Why do people so often cite the failures of Democratic socialism by cherry picking their examples?

Call it splitting hairs, but those I would class as Social Democracy rather than Democratic Socialism. "Socialism" as with other political terminology is an oft-misused word. In true socialism, the government owns the means of production ie factories, businesses and farms. In Social Democracy, the means of production is private, but taxed to support the social programs that socialized production would otherwise support.

I think that experience has shown that private production is important because of that one critical factor that ironically its purveyors are always trying to eliminate: competition. Without competition, one industry will dominate a market and it will stagnate with no innovation required, because there is no need to if they already have all possible customers, not having any choice. Without competition we'd still be paying millions for building-sized computers filled with vacuum tubes, and as powerful as dollar-store pocket calculators are these days. This has been borne out in the biological world, where competition is called "natural selection" and has produced exquisite innovations over time, and even scientifically codified into AI where algorithms can solve problems much faster by competing against each other for the solution and varying depending on what works.

Thus, I don't mind capitalism as long as it is regulated to avoid becoming corrupt, or corrupting, and supports the society that in turn supports it by being well-off enough to be customers.

Why not cite Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Italy, Canada,
Norway, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland or the Netherlands,
............BECAUSE, if you have ever studied the various forms of Government/Economic societies, you would REALIZE these ARE NOT Socialist Governments.......they are Capitalist with massive Social programs........there's a difference........just ask the Venezuelans..........amazing how YOU cherry pick apples and call them an orange.

Or do you think Venezuela is not Socialist AND a failure?

You're trying to compare oranges with apples again Eye because you just comprehend (or just don't want to) the fundamental differences (as usual) between them (but you keep on doing it and Clyde as well is in the same boat you).

Since this post was moved from it's INTENDED thread........

HERE IT IS AGAIN!

And in the TRUE Socialist universe......

NBC News - ‎Friday‎, ‎February‎ ‎8‎, ‎2019Hungry Venezuelans seek food at Colombian border, as Maduro blocks supplies
On Thursday, much-needed aid arrived at the Colombian-Venezuelan border, provided and facilitated by the United States Agency for International Development.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has refused to receive the aid. Earlier this week, Maduro said, “We are not a country of beggars.”

On Wednesday, Venezuelan authorities blocked the bridge with metal barricades and freight containers, keeping any vehicle from moving forward into the country.

I don't get it.
Venezuela is a plutocracy/autocracy , not at socialist, country.
And rather off topic as well.

And some people think that living in a so called democracy where greed and corruption are encouraged and mass murders go on regularly is a great thing.

Oh, there's an AOC thread now, I better run and get over there. ;-)

What? Minimum wages are set by the government in the USA?
Sounds very much like socialist state idea to me.
In Sweden there is no statutory minimum wage, but these are established through collective agreements between the partners, ie employers and unions, without direct government involvement. Collective agreements are voluntary, which is why their lowest mark is only the minimum wage within the companies that have chosen to join the collective agreements. As a result, there is no minimum wage in Sweden, but the wage is a completely unregulated agreement between employees and employers.

The difference between Capitalism and Socialism is that under a capitalist system you can better yourself, under a socialist system the government limits how much you can better yourself... let that sink in 😎
For those cognitively limited readers here's what that means in the real world.

The difference between Capitalism and Socialism is that...
Under socialism, you can never sink below zero, no matter how many misfortunes come your way.

I seem to remember the same being true under a certain religion, founded some 2,000 years ago in what we now call the Middle East.

.......or how hard you try? Try foisting that shovel full to the starving people of Venezuela, whose leader(much like 'let them eat cake' Pelosi), refers to his Army blocked US food and medical aid as 'crumbs'.

Hubris is common among the Socialist elite.

Under that 'certain religion' the virtue of personal work for gain to make life as good for your family as possible was also extolled, ...........not paychecks for those 'unwilling to work'(A. O-Cs writings not mine).

OK, fair comment. We have to separate true socialism from the 'false flag' selfish despots who like to use the term while feathering their own and their cronies' nests.

Of course we do, one isn't socialism, but it is called socialism and used as a false flag so they can set that system up for themselves.
Venezuela isn't socialism it is monopolistic capitalism. The endpoint of all societies when the wealth ratio between the haves and the have-nots becomes too large. Rapidly thereafter follows collapse.

Trump has a more diplomatic way to put it. "It's a "sh**hole country":). Well it's government has been very bad for decades which kinda sad because otherwise Venezuela would have been a country with prosperity.

So in your opinion if the US goes socialist, it is going to end up like Cuba, China or even Venezuela.

When actually the aim might be to become more like the Nordic countries with a lack of government interference in business affairs, have no minimum wage rules, have unions that negotiate wages, have good schools and health programs. And the workers are generally healthier, have good incomes and probably more importantly, rated as being happier than US citizens.

We must, to a great extent, limit the power we give to humans.

@Clyde, who should be in power? If you say no one then you are advocating anarchy.

You trust Trump types with Total Power over Law, Regulations and under Socialism, the means of Production?
That's called Communism or Marxism, not Socialism.
