Yes, attaboys to Eric for fixing the download problem late this afternoon. Everything back to normal running.

Long outage, but we're back.

Yep.
Considering the length of the outage, and that there still may yet be other system issues, I think it's going to be very rocky recovery.
So far it's "Project has no tasks available" for any requests for work.

Edit- shock horror. Just got some work (unfortunately it won't download, but at least it's taking a while to go in to backoff mode- it's not instant like it was when the download servers were causing their previous grief).

Every so often a WU or 2 manages to download, but it's taking a lot of Retry effort just to get those occasional downloads to occur.

Just switched down to <max_file_xfers_per_project>1</max_file_xfers_per_project> and managed to get the few that I had got to download.

The downloads managed to clear themselves, although there's now no work in the Ready-to-send buffer, and regardless of what the Server status page might show, the spitters aren't actually producing any work at this stage.
So there's no work available at present.

Eric knows what is wrong, flaky Mysql and Informix databases bloated with 20 years of data, and servers at least 4 years old, out of their depth trying to cope with it all. No money and no staff. In the last 24 hours alone the project has lost another 100 active users.

It is a pity that so few users throw something into the donation fund. Very much invest in expensive GPU's. A few dollars donations would help the project a lot.
The project with the largest Cult status should be worth a few dollars, I think.
Then it works with the technology!

Let's not get into name-calling again, but I agree with the basic principle:

If you want to crunch for SETI (for whatever reason) seriously enough to put your own money into a computer build, please consider donating a small percentage of your budget to the work supply chain. Without the servers and the staff who manage them, your hardware investment will be useless.

Then of course we have the social oddballs that choose to hide donations.
Just as odd as those who hide their computers. Mind you, I can understand why in some circumstances. Would have shown some up discrepancies like running an armful of 750ti's 3 years before they were released.

Social oddball?

I hide my donations because I don't judge people on whether they donate or not, you might also find it "odd" I have my add blocker hide all donation status on every single poster here.

That way I treat everyone the same as I never see green stars or any animated donation gif.

In my eyes everyone is equal.

Also it shows that lack of a green star has no bearing as to whether some had donated.

And some O.S. peoples' debit cards don't work outside of their own countries so they can't do so either.

Cheers.

You're right.
I'm not talking about green stars. Please have a look at the donation history. That could and should be better.

When we did the special fundraiser about 15 months ago, I found

Berkeley: Giving From Abroad

That's not total global coverage (no mention of Australia or New Zealand), but it does show that other channels are available. Eric also dug out the old wire transfer details, and we confirmed that they still worked - though that's more appropriate for larger sums, and not as convenient as credit/debit cards.

Chris, thank you for the reminder. I have written to Dr. K. several times over the years inquiring as to whether there is anything that the project needs to overcome these difficulties in the way of hardware etc. that we could hold a fundraiser for. I have had positive responses for expansions (ie Green Bank and Parkes) but not for anything for day-to-day operations, which may be mundane but are certainly required. So I've just sent off another one. In each of these I have expressed that he can ask anytime.

Thus, actually, "the ball in their court"...

I keep getting the "no tasks available" response. And my client has been hitting them every 5 minutes or so for a while.

Would the paypal work around work for those countries the cards won't work outside of?

PayPal users: We vastly prefer the other donation methods listed above (due to lower overhead and ease of management), but if you can't contribute to us otherwise, you can now use PayPal. Thanks to the helpful support of the GPU Users Group, they are collecting donations via PayPal for SETI@home, which (after the standard PayPal overhead) is redirected entirely to us for general use or to then purchase specific pieces of hardware. The GPU Users Group is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so donations made via this method are similarly tax-deductible. If you use this method, there may be a long delay (as much as a month) before you obtain your green star. For more information, or to make a donation through the GPU Users Group, click here.

Look in the Server Status Page

Results ready to send 0 0 0 0m
Current result creation rate ** 0/sec 0/sec 0/sec 5m

No work is been generating so we have nothing to DL.

All we can do is crunch what we have and hope they could restart the creation of new work ASAP.
I believe you already read the msg posted yesterday telling they have problem with a memory update and are working to fix that.
