Message 1979788 - Posted: 10 Feb 2019, 22:40:08 UTC

After a restart, subsequent to a driver update session, SETI wont work when computer is in use, because SUM THING checked "SUSPEND GPU when computer in use". This is NOT chosen in my LOCAL preferences. With NO MS update, I am at a total loss to prorffer ANY cogent theory.

I am unable to CHECK or UNCHECK ANY box on the website either DEFAULT/PREFERRED or HOME. On my Dell Inspiron 5459 + WIN 10, 64-bit system, LOCAL preferences do NOT abjure WEB preferences. There is NOTHING I can do to get S@H to run with my computer, well, computing.

I thank the community in advance,

Phil, WF3W

This setting is controlled on your local BOINC client under Tools > Computing preferences... > Processor usage tab, not the SETI@Home preferences on your profile on this site.

Pse forgive: I was remiss mentioning S@H privileges, in isolation. My intent to xpatiate myself fully was to include S@H, Preferred and Home options/values as every avenue I pursued on the website.

It is my understanding, choosing LOCAL, as opposed to WEB, preferences shd take precedence, thus nullifying or eliminating my SUSPEND GPU issue.

Thank-u for ur time & guidance,

Phil

After an exhaustive review of my limitations, I find that, in spite of NO update from MS, my GPU is MISSING, not suspended. However, this arose after a driver update without my ability to confirm is any new drivers deal with GPU. There were several Intel graphics drivers updated... FLW

I do not know how to run S@H without a GPU or switch-off my GPU or apprise the program to compute along, without using a GPU.

May I renew my pleas for help, anew, with sincere apologies for misdiagnosis and unknown etiology?

Thanks prospectively,

Phil, WF3W

When you allow Windows 10 to update the drivers - and in a lot of cases you have no choice whatsoever, so don't fret over it - it installs drivers without OpenCL.
To get OpenCL back, you'll have to install the drivers from the GPU's manufacturer's website.
In the case of Intel, that's from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/
In the case of AMD, that's from https://www.amd.com/en/support
In the case of Nvidia, that's from https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

You ran Intel GPU tasks.
Install drivers preferably clean, that's usually an option in the installer.

When editing preferences from the website, such as at https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global you have to scroll down to the green Edit preferences button and click it, before the check boxes become available. After changing things, click the green Update preferences button on that page to save the information.

Preferences used via BOINC Manager's Options->Computing preferences override any of the same web preferences. It will show at the top of the Computing preferences window here what preferences you use, local or web preferences.

Say Ageless/Jord,

Thank-u very much for ur reply! Where do u learn this stuff???

1 of my limitations was forgetting abt the green edit button at the bottom. Sori abt that.

After getting no where with Dell - with my Intel HD Graphics 530 card- uninstalling, reininstalling... blah blah blah...abjuring responsibility with reference to "software problems"...

I immediately rushed to Intel's website. Unfortunately, there is a blizzard of graphics drivers for my CPU & OS. My 530 is not listed, even tho there r 2 other 5XX series boards.

It says there is no phone support. I am still waiting for a chat - and Im #1 in the queue!

Aside from DCH-type drivers, if u can divine which, xact/specific, driver to grab, I am urs til SETI is discovered. I cant not think of any additional info to provide.

Is it fruitful to suggest, this error msg b changed to "GPU DRIVER is missing"?

TNX agn for all ur time & guidance,

Phil

Hey Keith,

Say WHAT????

I am utterly in the dark as to the meaning, or purpose, of ur reply.

I was replying to AGELESS in his attempt to save/help me. As far as my thinking can take me, I dont wanna change thread, msg, topic or intent. Did he, in fact, also see 1979926??

PLEASE allow AGELESS/Jord to reply to my desperation, in the smoothly continuing thread. All I need is to discover which OpenCL driver I require, from Intel, and Im back into S@H.

Enjoy Valentine's Day,

Phil

You asked whether it would be prudent to change the thread topic to something more relevant other than "DISASTER WITHOUT - WITHOUT MS UPDATE"

I gave the instructions on how to do that. Where is the confusion?

Keith he wanted the BOINC error message changed not the thread title.

@Philsard

I think you want this driver:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28515/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10?product=88196

The release note are here:

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/28515/eng/ReleaseNotes_DCH_25.20.100.6519.pdf

On page 4 under the supported hardware it says:

"6th Generation Intel® Core™ processors with Intel® HD Graphics 520/530"

Which is I believe what you have.

Hopefully Jord will confirm this

No, because the driver isn't missing, it just lacks a necessary component. If the driver were missing your screen's resolution would be 800x600 pixels and you wouldn't even be in BOINC trying to figure out what was wrong.

BOINC will tell in the messages under CTRL+SHIFT+E things like app version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it and app version refers to missing GPU type Intel which when you post exactly that to the forum, people will be able to help you with immediately.

Where do u learn this stuff???

Hi Keith,

I addressed emendating the ERROR msg to GPU DRIVER MISSING, not the title of this topic/thread.

I thot I had posted under WIN and/or WIN GPU or sumthing germane to my issue. U r correct, in that DISASTER... , by itself, confers no meaning. I will heed ur post and alter the thread title IF it carries-along those proffering help.

Take it easy,
Phil

Hey Bernie,

Thank-u VERY much for ur reply!

If u will permit, genius thinks alike: while waiting for yesterday's maintenance session to end, I did precisely the suggestions in ur email, which email I just now read.

The driver installed flawlessly but... there has been a - significant? - change; I used to have a full compliment of tasks, each one saying "GPU missing". Now I have nothing in my Tasks list.

After plying every combination and permutation of PREFERENCES, local & web, I get the same error msg:

SETI@home: Notice from BOINC
Your current settings do not allow tasks from this project. To fix this, you can change Project Preferences on the project's web site.
2/12/2019 17:45:56

At this juncture, I must conclude my system has a functioning Intel 530 graphics card AND all correct sftwr, tho I have never found a reference to OpenCL anywhere. BUT I have read, I think, OpenCL is emebedded in the driver sftwr?

Am I nuts or do I remember S@H pospering ,for years, without loss of consortiumn of GPU? Can BOINC b run without a GPU and HOW do I select for it?

After passing 2 MILLION, I am eager to get my BOINC/S@H up & running.

Take care,

Phil

Yo Jord,

The very 1st thing I did was peruse the Event Log. If there was/is sumthing abt GP or OpenCL or "doesnt support", I will surrender my SETI card.

Per Bernie's instructions, the driver installed flawlessly but... there has been a - significant? - change. I used to have a full compliment of tasks, each one saying "GPU missing". Now I have nothing in my Tasks list.

I am encouraged that, after 19 years, ONE of us grasps the basic fundamentals : O) Of course, research is always on-going.

I thank-u for ur continued support, help and time,

Take it easy,

Now I have nothing in my Tasks list.
Make sure your view option is set correctly.
In Tasks you have Command buttons on the left. Make sure it shows "Show all tasks". The button shows the state it is in, not the option you have.
If it says "Show active tasks" click it once so it changes to "Show all tasks". Does that populate your tasks list?

Can BOINC b run without a GPU and HOW do I select for it?
Yes, that's set in the Project Preferences https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project, but I would wait until this project reacts normal again. Now it's slow to go anywhere, let alone edit your preferences.

In the mean time you can check if you have OpenCL by downloading clinfo.zip, opening it and saving the clinfo.exe to a place you can remember. Or follow the instructions below to the letter:

Unzip clifo.zip to C:\BOINC\clinfo.exe
Click Start->Run, type cmd.exe and hit Enter
In the command line window that now opened, type:
cd\boinc (and hit Enter)
clinfo.exe >> clinfo.txt (and hit Enter)
You can now close the command line window.
Navigate to C:\BOINC with Windows Explorer.
Open clinfo.txt with Notepad
Copy all
Post that into an answer here and submit the answer.

If you look in the release notes I linked to you will see

CONTENTS OF THE PACKAGE:
• Intel® Graphics Driver
• Intel® Display Audio Driver (10.26.00.05)
• Intel® Media SDK Runtime
• Intel® OpenCL* Driver

So yes you should have the OpenCL driver

Hi Jord,

I cant guess how many times I switched between SHOW ACTIVE, SHOW ALL! Im afraid both yield identical displays, viz., blank.

Im familiar with redirecting text output to a text file, from coding batch utilities. However, this is what I get trying to dump clinfo to text:

C:\Users\Administrator>cd\boinc

C:\BOINC>clinfo.exe >> clinfo.txt
'clinfo.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\BOINC>clinfo.exe >> clinfo.txt
'clinfo.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\BOINC>

There is nothing in C\Boinc xcept the executable file. I didnt dare type these commands, I C&P. To me, they appear quite legit for a DOS command...

HOLD THE PHONE!!! I did a DIR and got this:

C:\BOINC>dir
Volume in drive C is OS
Volume Serial Number is 84B3-3347

Directory of C:\BOINC

02/13/2019 15:29 <DIR> .
02/13/2019 15:29 <DIR> ..
02/13/2019 15:27 <DIR> clinfo.exe
02/13/2019 15:29 0 clinfo.txt
1 File(s) 0 bytes
3 Dir(s) 883,913,854,976 bytes free

C:\BOINC>

NOW there is a NotePad file, with correct icon but utterly blank.

I checked the release notes and yeh, it says I have OpenCL; DRIVER VERSION: 25.20.100.6519 DATE: January 17th, 2019.

TNX Jord,

Hi Bernie,

U r correct: IF I have the correct docs & driver package, DRIVER VERSION: 25.20.100.6519 DATE: January 17th, says I have OpenCL.

I just ran CLinfo and dumped the output to text. NotePad shows a completely blank file and DIR pegs it at 0 bytes.

TNX very much for ur "continuing" input : O)

You can fix this by adding C:\BOINC to your environment variables, as this is a problem where Windows doesn't know what it should do because it doesn't know where it is.

Go Control Panel-> System-> Advanced System Settings->Environment Variables
In the System Variables window find Path, select it and click Edit, jump to the end and add ;C:\BOINC
Make sure it begins with the semicolon.

When done, click OK and exit these windows.
Now open cmd.exe again (some people say you need a reboot) and try the clinfo.exe >> clinfo.txt command again.

Edit: rethinking that, normally the C:\temp or C:\tmp directory is already specified in the PATH variable, so instead of C:\BOINC you should be able to use C:\Temp or C:\tmp to put clinfo.exe in (and run the command from).
