I was running a BOINC install on a Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS machine awhile ago and noticed that when opening viewing, and exiting the BOINC manager BOINC manager will multiply itself in Linux memory. Very unusual. Do not recall the version of BOINC I was using at the time or anything. It happened then and I do not know if that is still currently happening or not. More or less this is an FYI for users to be aware of if running Linux Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I know currently Ubuntu is 18.04 LTS not sure about this version at all, perhaps someone running this currently knows? |

I've never seen that happen in either Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04 or 18.10. Are you confused about which program you believe is still running? Normally the client runs all the time in the background. The manager is a different program used to control and interact with the client. The Manager has a dialog on exit that asks whether you want to just exit the Manager or to have the Manager also kill the current running tasks and exit the client. If you set that when you exit the Manager, neither the Manager nor the Client is left running and also the system reclaims the memory. I am pretty sure it was the BOINC manager GUI in Ubuntu 16.04, I even tested it by opening, closing and exiting multiple times. Perhaps it was the version Ubuntu had in their repositories? I am aware Ubuntu is never rapid in releasing newer software versions through their repos, and whatever they had was what I used at the time. |

If you think this is the case, then document the fact that memory is not released after closing the Manager and has a memory leak and post that as an issue on the BOINC development website for the developers to investigate. https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
