Was looking to replace my Haswell (spectre/meltdown) desktop because on no bios update. Asus has no update for my Z87 mobo. Been years since I built this desktop & always looking for new ?

Tnx

Hi Ken,

I don't have a NUC, but I watched a video from a person that has a computer business and he got one for his wife. He says she uses it on a daily basis. It's good for doing normal everyday stuff. Gaming is out. I don't know how it would do on SETI. I'm running 3 Raspberry Pis with SETI which are credit card sized complete computers. They work fine on SETI. I just don't know about the NUC.

Have a great day! :)

Think I will forget the the NUC boxes. I was just interested in speeding up the Haswell and it looks like Asus is not going to update the bios. At one time I ran seti on 2 Shuttle boxes which are much bigger than the NUC and had to watch cpu temp closely.

Have fun !

If you are looking for a small box computer, you might want to consider the new Corsair One computers like the i160. Custom small form factor case with very high end components suitable for crunching. Thermals look great for a convection cooled computer.

Jayztwocents did a review and liked it a lot.

I am not sure but "monospice" might have one.

Another option, the ultra-compact form-factor (UCFF) S200 PC.

EGlobal S200s are only slightly larger than Intel’s own NUCs, but with the high-end Core i7-8750HK or Intel Xeon E-2176M inside they can offer considerably higher levels of performance.

EGlobal is among companies that have managed to develop something unique: the S200 system measures 5.6 × 5.3 × 2.5 inches, yet it packs a rather powerful processor.
The EGlobal S200 is based on Intel’s Coffee Lake-H mobile CPUs, with the manufacturer offering the Core i5-8300H, Core i7-8750HK, or Xeon E-2176M as options. The system also has two SO-DIMM slots for DDR4 memory (thus supporting up to 32 GB), an M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot for an SSD, as well as a 2.5-inch bay for a SATA storage device. The CPU is cooled using a rather simplistic air cooling system featuring an aluminum radiator, which should be plenty for stock performance, but it remains to be seen whether it would be enough for overclocking of the unlocked Core i7-8750HK.

I've got one, NUC7i7BNH, i7, 32 Gb, m.2 SSD.

It's a fast laptop in the NUC form factor. The fan can be a bit noticeable, but it's not too loud. One nice thing, it's got a Thunderbolt 3 port so you can slap an eGFX external Thunderbolt enclosure on it, all ready for the GPU of your choice. I ran a 1080 Ti that way for a while, but work wanted their enclosure back so now it's all CPU and the onboard Iris OpenCL crunching.
