Someone posted a review which compare the stock cpu air coolers to a higher performance air? cooler and found differences in what they tested (games I think) to be in the 1% range. I have also run across multiple statements that "so far" AMD has done such a good job there is almost no headroom for additional manual overclocking. They also said that as Amd/MB manufacturer's gain more experience they expect microcode?/bios updates/other stuff? to increase the available OC headroom. Just finished reading a review for the 3800x where they suggested if the user was willing to "tune" it the 3700x was going to be able to perform (for games) just as well and is $X (50?) cheaper. Well I still am awaiting stock on the 3900X to come back. I have never found it available anytime I look for it. I have auto-notify on and it only becomes available in the wee hours of the morning when I am asleep it seems. Want to purchase from Amazon as I have Amazon bucks to apply on the purchase for a better price. But I will only purchase directly from Amazon at MSRP and not from gouging 3rd party vendors. So I continue to wait. I wonder if the yields are so poor for the dies that AMD can't keep the distribution pipelines filled. [Edit] Well I finally was just able to order the 3900X. Supposed to arrive next Monday. [Edit 2] Well, that was a bust. The order did not go through because the item is unavailable. Or it is the one everyone "wants" one so the demand is far outstripping production? I can see the 3950x having a similar issue only worse. Gee whiz, it has 16 cores, OMG.... :) If I was going for a straight 8c/16t trade up for my 2700 and/or my 2600(6c/12t), I think the 3700x maybe the thing. Well you could always wait (perhaps interminably) for the Threadripper 3 at 64/128? jsm |

Have anyone reported some struggles with 3700X (Zen 2 series overall) My 3700x started to reboot sporadic and only got worse and worse. It started with a reboot in Ubuntu, tried to get it going, got it to work but then it was the same in Windows too, sporadic reboot. Noes! :-/ (EDIT: When i installed my 2700X again all seems peachy, to be continued with the tests) _________________________________________________________________________ Addicted to SETI crunching! Have anyone reported some struggles with 3700X (Zen 2 series overall) There is supposed to be an Amd bios driver patch to allow later than 18.04 to work. Has it shown up on your MB website? It might fix the issue. Take a look, see if you can disable the CPB? I remember it sometimes being an issue. Go back to all "auto" and see if the problem goes away? Have anyone reported some struggles with 3700X (Zen 2 series overall) My 3700x has been very stable. Running non-stop since I finished benchmarks. I am running with optimized defaults, which includes CPB=Auto (which causes it to be enabled). I am running on an older MB, x370 C6H, with latest BIOS from Asus. Have you tried running with GPU compute disabled? |

I'm done with the tests. For some reason and i don't know why, the 3700X got degraded slowly until it couldn't even start Windows sometimes. I thought it was the graphics etc.. But as soon as i exchanged to my old 2700X all is working again. To clarify, all was good and peachy and stable until yesterday where the computer suddenly rebooted after some upgrades to Ubuntu, after that i couldn't start up and as soon as i was in desktop for a few seconds it autorebooted again. Thought some upgrades wacked it and i cleared that one up. When nothing was working i got tired of it and booted Windows and was surprised that it rebooted in Windows just the same.. At that point i know something was up and i flashed to a earlier bios which were more unstable.. This day i changed GPU, did a memtest and all was fine but it wouldn't function in Windows or Ubuntu. Then i got tired and switched cpu back with the same settings. And everything is back as before.. (I'm now typing in Ubuntu again) and Windows works with everything. So all in all i've got myself a bricked 3700X for some reason after running S@H 24/7 with default voltages and no overclocks whatsoever (I don't OC the cpus anylonger, i want silence) ... Crap.. //Vyper _________________________________________________________________________ Addicted to SETI crunching! Founder of GPU Users Group |

Sorry to hear that Vyper.. Thanks. But it's a learning curve too. No worries as i can do a return of the cpu! But i hope that this is a rare occasion and doesn't happen on a regular basis. I read about quite high idle voltages and so but i never in my mind would think that it could be that the cpu is so sensitive for the voltages to get bricked?! If anyone wonder i had Zero troubles with my Asus X470 Prime Pro motherboard and i flashed to latest Bios before i changed to the 3700X so i wouldn't encounter weird stuff. Turned out that i did anyway. I miss the 3700X! It was a success until that happened and i still wish Amd best of luck, because it seems like they outsell Intel on various locations. https://www.google.se/search?q=amd+outselling+intel&oq=Amd+outsell&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0.6336j1j7&client=ubuntu&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 This will be ironed out in the long run so i'm not worried. I'll be back with a Zen 2 later on again. :) _________________________________________________________________________ Addicted to SETI crunching! Founder of GPU Users Group |

Sorry to hear that Vyper.. I'm pretty sure all the YT tech channels said the "too high" idle voltages were a "red herring" Sounds like you just got bit by a case of "infant mortality" on a new product. Talk to AMD Support and ask for an RMA. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Have anyone reported some struggles with 3700X (Zen 2 series overall) Sorry to hear of your troubles. My 1700’s sometimes just lock up and I have four of them, never have found out why. So far my 3600 has been behaving well. The only issue I have had is with the mobo treating my memory as DDR4-2400 when it’s actually 3200. I’m blaming ASUS for that one and expect they’ll iron out issues with the bios in due course. Mother board is a X570-P running it on optimised defaults apart from fans which are set to turbo. I assume you switched the XMP profile to 3200 and its still running at 2400? XMP profile #1 is shown as 3200MHz CL16, profile #2 as 3000MHz CL15. The memory is HyperX Predator 3200Mhz CL16. I couldn't get it to select either XMP profile. I could set the memory speed to pretty much any value it had on the drop-down list but it goes back to 2400MHz when its rebooted. I've raised a bug with ASUS. While its not as fast as it could go at least its working. Talking about out of stock, I ordered my first Ryzen 3600 on 7/7 almost as soon as they put them online. The next day they were out of stock. I went to order another 3 machines two days ago and they've been back-ordered. When I spoke to the sales rep they said they have 100 cpu's coming in at the end of the month. Motherboards are also out of stock. BOINC blog |

When you switch the memory speed, is it booting up right away, or does it have troubles posting? I've started to overclock my memory on my computer. In my limited experience even if you change the XMP profile the ram timings may stay the same from your previous memory speed if you're not careful. I could see the situation where the memory speed is changed but the timings stay the same, you close out of bios, the computer has trouble booting, and reverts back to the old memory settings after trying a few times. My annoyance of not being able to find a 3900X in stock was amplified, in that I could not even order one on backorder till just yesterday. I thought I had one briefly but in between the time I put one into my shopping cart and hitting checkout, it got snatched away by someone else quicker on the mouse than myself. At least I was given a $25 complimentary account coupon for the inconvenience. And I was able to use the $70 of Amazon bucks I had accumulated for the prior month. So that knocked the cost down almost a hundred bucks. So expected to see it July 25th. We'll see. Not in that much of a hurry considering the VERY slow release of BIOS updates from ASUS that handles the cpu. When you change the default memory timings in the BIOS away from JEDEC 2133, on the next reboot after saving the changes in the BIOS, the machine needs to train for the memory. It should turn itself off and on for 3 cycles before the new memory timings stick. Memory training cycles is normally default at 3 but in most BIOS' you can up the training to help with stubborn memory sticks that are not on the validated memory list. Huh, I don't know that I have noticed that yet, at least every single time. I have seen it turn off and on for 3 cycles occasionally, but perhaps I have not been paying close enough attention. Now I'm thinking the one time I saw that happen when I changed the procODT, perhaps I should not have dismissed it as a "bad" setting. I've only been able to OC from the default 3200 up to 3266 so far. I played with 3333, but I haven't had enough time to be successful (with no memory errors) yet. If you don't get the three memory training cycles and a final POST beep, the memory settings are bad and will fall back to 2133. It can also lock up the machine requiring a BIOS CMOS reset to get back to square one. Ryzen has always done best with single rank memory sticks in the 2 X 8GB configuration. It also has preferred memory made with Samsung B-dies. That memory is easiest to achieve rated XMP settings of the memory sticks. Have you tried the Ryzen DDR4 Memory Calculator by 1usmus? https://www.overclock.net/forum/13-amd-general/1640919-new-dram-calculator-ryzena-1-5-1-overclocking-dram-am4-membench-0-7-dram-bench.html It really does make it a lot easier to achieve decent memory timings on Ryzen. He works with AMD and is privvy to lots of technical information that only developers are given. The current version is not setup for Zen 2 yet but if you use the Zen+ selection, it will be close. He says a new version able to handle Zen 2 is forthcoming shortly. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
