I would suggest reading all of this thread from the beginning starting with jsm's OP. He has a 2990WX and has spent several months trying to find the optimal cpu task usage loading that produces the greatest amount of RAC with the fastest possible cpu times. Just a hint though . . . . it was NOT with all cpu cores crunching cpu tasks. Meat of the matter on Page 4.

Yeah I'll have to sit down later tonight and read it... been crazy busy outside with house and yard work haha!

One question though. Now that the gpu is doing 2 work units they both complete in around 20 minutes compared to 10ish minutes just doing one work unit at a time. Is that increase in time normal?

Yes. Anytime you do more than 1 at a time, the time to complete will increase. What you are looking for is a decrease in individual time. So take the time to complete and divide it by the number running on the GPU and it should be less than 1 running by itself. This is more evident on higher end GPUs.

That's what I was thinking... 20/2 and you get 10 mins per work unit individually. I really appreciate all the help!

So I am really loving the performance of this Threadripper machine! What a powerhouse of a computer! I cant imagine what AMD's new cpu's will be like...

You could take it another notch further along by running better cpu apps via the Lunatics Installer. The stock cpu app is pretty pokey. The choice of either the SSE3 or AVX cpu app in the Lunatics Installer would get your crunching times down another 20-30% faster than the stock cpu application. The Lunatics Installer is here:

http://mikesworld.eu/download.html

Make sure you select the SoG gpu application in the configurator.

What kind of speeds are you running the TR at? It still seems slow which I allude to probably both the stock app and base clocks. You can get a lot more clocks out of the TR than the base clocks with some BIOS tuning.

I'll take a look into the Lunatics app...

I'm just running the stock clocks and I'm ok with it for now , still getting a feel for this new computer and once I know she's stable I might look into some slight cpu overclocking. I will say that the Asus 1060 6gb has been running great since I started a few months ago on Asus's overclock mode at 1962mhz.

You should fairly easily get a all-core clock of 3.7Ghz on the chip.

OK test completed on 2990wx at 95% cpu. Previous 7 days ratio against the two 1800 m/cs was 1.757 at 50% and this week at 95% is 1.623. This is not as big a difference as we saw some time ago but note that I am running Ubuntu 19.04 which is reputed to have improved the scheduling algorithm. Also the gpu is now in the mix.
Obviously as running with nearly all the cpus in action results in higher temperatures and thus I will revert to 50% forthwith.
I may look at the lunatics approach next but I don't think I want to add more gpus in view of the water pipes obstructing the slots for large cards.
Also I am hoping that TR3 will arrive with the memory links cleared and the cpus doubled. I will trade in some of my premium bonds to get that!

So we need some substantiated rumors about when the 3rd Gen Threadrippers are going to show!

You could always upgrade your AM4's to that 16c/32t jobby that is supposed to ship in August :)
Or you could see how much you could gain if you switched them to Linux ;) (My Amd AM4 Zen+ cpus are pretty much running cpu tasks in under an hour under Linux Tbar's AllinOne for "most" of the tasks.
Not sure how much slower Zen would be under Linux.

The only "rumors/news" I have heard for Zen 2 TR's is 4th quarter. And that is assumed to be "late" 4th quarter. So I figure December. Or just let the announcement slide to CES in January.

Several of the "rumor mills" were swearing up and down that we would have pre-ordering for the new Ryzen 3000 cpus available 7 days before shipping. As of this morning I haven't seen any pre-ordering available on New Egg or eBay.

Anyone seen anything?

I just thought that the 7th was launch date and that was it... I did notice that 2700x's on NewEgg are out of stock except for the 50th Anniversary Gold Edition, I find that to be very odd!

I didn't actually expect anything to be available until the embargo lifted. There is a lot of promotional money on the table for vendors, NOT to broach the embargo date. It is no different than the cudgel Intel holds over the vendors heads with their product releases. AMD has a lot more marketing power than they have had in the past. Just witness the depth and breadth of the new product platforms being released. You would never have seen the variety of product releases or the uplift in the motherboard platforms to equal the past Intel product releases if the vendors didn't believe in the new cpu technology. The AMD Zen 2 is the next "next big thing" and no vendor wants to miss out on the new and revitalized revenue stream.

If any vendor was wise, they would have sold off all existing old inventory in anticipation of the huge demand for Ryzen 3000 cpus.

Which translates to "we haven't ordered any yet, but send us your $$$ and we may get round to it"

Sorry i haven't read the whole thread..yet, I expect somebody has already said it but the problem is windows, try the same set up in Linux and you will get much better times. I did 64 tasks on Cosmology they took between 6 and 20 hours to complete, did the same on ubunto and the times were 4-8 hours for the 64 tasks

A Different project and different applications will give different processing times depending on where the development effort went, compared to different applications that have received differing levels of development here at Seti.
