I went back a re-read the article. I see where I made an assumption based on the commentary about low clocks that the chip was an ES sample.

Makes sense it was a retail chip with the part number being printed on the IHS. But I know there have been many deep fakes on leaks before with manipulated images.

The socket is supposed to be the same SP3 socket as the 7002 series. Just would need a BIOS update supposedly.

I expect the same kind of price creep we saw with Ryzen 5000 series chips too.

I am running QuChemPedlA@home on a Windows 10 PC with an Intel i5 9400F CPU. 94% users run Linux, most with an AMD Ryzen CPU. Since I am using Windows I must use VirtualBox. Funny thing, in most of my validated tasks using VirtualBox my CPU is faster than my wingmen who don't use VirtualBox. Having joined only on September 5, I am in number 47 position as user and my Windows CPU is number 97. I have another CPU running the same project, a 2014 vintage HP laptop with an AMD E-450 CPU running SuSE Linux 15.0.

AMD is also using SC20 to say that EPYC "Zen 3" processors are shipping in volume to select HPC and cloud customers this quarter. The public launch of AMD EPYC Zen 3 CPUs will be in Q1'2021.

Some video cards with both display ports and hdmi ports won't display the POST Bios. Just the OS start up.

I am looking at your Rx 580 on my Amd 3950x

I am going to have to go borrow an hdmi to vga adapter from another machine and look at my bios settings again. The cpu is not running up near 3.9 like it used to.

Looks like there are going to be some truly impressive new server systems out come next year.
You're looking at a single socket system that is more powerful & uses much, much less power than an octa socket system from just on a decade ago.

Looks like the rumors about the WRX80 Threadripper chipset were real. New Threadripper Pro cpus are now available to everyone, not just the OEM vendors. Same goes for new WRX80 based motherboards.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/16396/the-amd-wrx80-chipset-a-few-boards-for-3rd-gen-threadripper-pro

Will be nice to have proper 8 channel, ECC memory support and a proper amount of PCIE slots from boards from SuperMicro, ASUS and Gigabyte. I'm sure more will follow.

That ASUS Sage WS board looks especially sweet.

Annandtech have a hands on look at a retail Threadripper Pro motherboard.
ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WiFi.

And as for how the Threadripper Pro performs, a reminder.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX Review A Bold WEPYC.
Normal Threadrippers are great if memory bandwidth isn't an issue, but if you have a workload that does require plenty of per thread memory bandwidth then the performance of the Threadripper Pro is in a league all of it's own.

Jeebers. Approx. £5.4k for MB & CPU (64 core). Need a decent lottery win. :-)

Yep. And even at that price, it's still cheaper per core than the Intel offerings (although the distance is closing), but it does out perform them by a huge margin in most cases. So, it's still value for money (if your workloads can make use of all that memory bandwidth, otherwise just use a regular Threadripper).

Yes, but a regular Threadripper can't support the number of PCIE devices the WX80 motherboards can. No way to run 7 water-cooled single slot gpus on regular Threadripper. They don't make the mobos that can do that.

A regular Epyc motherboard and cpu is cheaper than the mentioned platform. Mine cost $1800 for 24 cores and 64GB of memory. You just won't get the same cpu clocks that TR can manage.

And *fingers crossed* by then the wafer & manufacturing shortages will be behind us and it'll be possible to actually buy some of these products when they are finally released.

Still at least a year out for these products. So good chance the foundries will have caught up with demand by then.
