Still sitting on the fence on whether to pull the trigger on the TR system upgrade. I want the better math performance of Zen 2 in the TR platform.

Or do I continue to await the market releases of the Zen 3 systems to see what they will offer.


Just saw a rumor for a 16c/32t Am4 socket running near 5.+ ghz. Not sure what its name will be.

Just think. For nearly the price of a 2nd 3950x cpu you could run 4 gpus ($700 MB).

Wouldn't cost more than that to upgrade your TR (both cpu and motherboard...)?

I hate having a single MB choice for 4 slots on AM4/X570 with the MSI Godlike. Yeesh, I would like an option of some other OEM vendor besides MSI.

The choice I would make in TRX40 motherboards would be the Asrock Creator for $460. Reasonable price for a TR board in my opinion.

But the least inexpensive TR using Zen 2 chiplets is the TR3960X with 24C/48T. I don't HAVE to have that many cores, 12 is fine or 16 better for my use case. And I have sunk $200 in a best in class TR cpu block that would be wasted if backleveling to AM4.

The heat transfer capability of the TR block is better than the AM4 block due to sheer size advantages.

That's good going for any CISC of any type.

Darn, I don't have any Ryzen 9's running windows right now. Just a Amd 2700 with a modest Nvidia card that I am trying to heat up my bedroom with.... ;)

So, a modest $50 increase in pricing over Zen 2 cpus for the new Zen 3 cpus.. 4.9Ghz boost on Ryzen 5950X. 19% IPC uplift overall. Both the 5900X and 5950X break 600 level in Single Thread Cinebench benchmarks.

Bring on the 3rd party benchmarks, but things are looking extremely promising.

For a long time now AMD have only been able to compete with Intel by being cheaper. The fact they are prepared to charge more for this next series of CPUs shows just how confident they are in the product.

the metrics in which intel has been able to claim victory have been chipped away little by little. AMD is not only pulling the value card anymore.

"We're the best at everything!"
--Ryzen 1000 comes out, offers good value
"We're more expensive, but still the best for most things!"
--Ryzen 2000 comes out, offers good value, and increased performance, much increased core counts on TR
"nice try guys, but we're still the best for games, who needs that many cores and HT anyway?"
--Ryzen 3000 comes out, offers good price/performance, massive increase in IPC and professional workloads, surpassing intel
"uhhh hmmmm, but we still... gaming? yeah gaming! clock speeds!"
--Ryzen 5000 comes out, more architectural and IPC improvements, better single core, multicore, and games performance than intel
"...*looking nervously around the room*... big number good! we still have 5.0+GHz"

Intel has officially lost the high ground. having the "bigger number" now is less relevant than ever with how much the IPC and single core performance has improved. Intel got too complacent with their lead. It's a classic "Tortoise and the Hare" tale. AMD pulled out the win while Intel was sleeping. The reason AMD still (and will continue to) struggles to keep up with nvidia, is because nvidia never stops innovating and havent let themselves be complacent with their lead.

it is fair to point out that AMD is really still competing with intels "old" tech (14nm). So it will be interesting to see what Intel can bring to the table when they finally get their act together on their 10nm node. who knows, maybe they have an ace up their sleeve? possible, but more likely that they will struggle to regain the lead at this point.

I can't figure out what Intel is doing messing about with big.LITTLE architecture for their 10nm desktop processors.

Is that their attempt at MCM to combat AMD on the desktop?

I am just thinking of all the changes to operating system schedulers that will be needed to figure out how and where to dispatch processes to appropriate nodes.

A nightmare to be sure.

Will have to wait for 2Q 2021 at least to find out.

I suspect this is part of Intel's counter-attack on the ARM cpus that are starting to X86 cpus...

Android/Kindle Fire seems to be able to cope with the BiG.liTTLe cores just fine (I think). At least the Boinc Manager on my Kindle Fire seems to notice all cores and unless I use more cores than the little ones it only runs on the littles (I think I remember).

I gave up trying to run on my older Kindle Fires. Mainly because of the heat and BOINC yellowing the screen. But also, the version of BOINC got old and no newer version available from the Kindle store.

First sighted Geekbench 5 benchmark numbers for the Ryzen 5950X, 5900X and 5800X.

Two runs of the 5950X broke 5Ghz on several cores.

For quite a leap and a jump:

AMD takes both the gaming and productivity crowns off Intel's head.
No product in stock though. All sold out. Need one right now and will pay anything . . . . just head to eBay and look at all the scalpers listings for $1200 5950X cpus.

First leaks of AMD Epyc Milan server chips. Zen 3 based 64 core part with model number of 7763.

Likely an engineering sample because of the low clocks.

Supposedly available end of year 2020.

with the 7002 series chips, the engineering samples didnt have the model number printed on the chip like they have pictured in that article, they were just blank with only the tray code. (100-000000053 for example). so that very well might be a retail chip. the clock speeds don't look that low to me for a 64-core part either. it actually has a higher boost clock than any of the previous 64-core parts.

but that should be interesting. I wonder how much AMD will charge for them. since we saw a price increase on the desktop parts, there will probably be a price increase here too.

They say Milan will be on the same SP3 socket, I hope that means I'll be able to use these chips on my existing boards with a BIOS update :)
