If you have been looking wishfully at a AMD 3900x the prices are beginning to spend more time within $50 of the MSRP of $499.95(?). And notices of the 3950x are showing up with significantly lower price premiums.... Maybe by Easter.... Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

But won't Madame Su be launching the 3990wx on Tuesday at CES. Preferably with an option of octo (or whatever) memory channel? JSM |

But won't Madame Su be launching the 3990wx on Tuesday at CES. Preferably with an option of octo (or whatever) memory channel? Other than we know that there are the TRX80 and WRX80 chipsets out there, we haven't heard any rumors yet of actual products employing 8 channels. All speculation so far. Amd's Eco Mode for the 3000 Series cpus. https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/ryzen-cpu-tdp-eco-mode If the number are right, 50% power reduction giving 70% production that is not a bad trade off. So can anyone see how to implement this at the Bio's level? Apparently if you can set the maximum TDP profile at the Bio's level you can emulate this "Eco Mode". And can this be done on a ROG Crosshair VII? Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Amd's Eco Mode for the 3000 Series cpus. Yes, it can be done in the BIOS through the Extreme Tweaker menu and the AMD CBS menu. Just set the PPT number to some value less than the 142W that is stock for 105W processors like the 3900X. Instead, you should adjust PPT (package power tracking). According to AnandTech, this is set by default to 88W for 65W TDP processors, and 142W for 105W TDP processors. Ryzen 7 4800U benchmarks have surfaced: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23316225, FP6, 1 CPU, 8 cores, 16 threads, Base clock 1.8 GHz, turbo 3.65 GHz (avg). Looks like Intel's going to be beat in the Laptop/Notebook market as well. |

@ Keith Myers Thanks for the reply and info. As for cooling, I have the Noctua NH U14S TR4-SP3 air cooler with two fans, but bump against the thermal limit during the daytime. Temps here (south Vietnam) are just too high for it. I guess a 360mm AIO would be my best bet. Then I can try boosting performance. |

Amd's Eco Mode for the 3000 Series cpus. And the PPT is hiding under the PBO menu item. And you have to set PBO to manual to see it. The ASUS search feature for the bios doesn't produce a "hit" for ppt. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

This week it's going to happen. I am going to build the desk on which I will build the new Ryzen system... ;-) . .. ... Naaah... I'll put that desk together so I can go build the new Ryzen system. It's time for me to replace my present computer. I think I can be shot down much faster by the irri drones in GRB with a new spiffy system than with the clunker I use now. :-P |

I hope that nobody was shocked by the price. After all, it is commensurate with an Epyc workstation/server processor. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

@ Keith Myers i live in south fl. the case i had it in with the dual card set up.... made a air pocket with a hs like yours. even with the 200mm in front the cpu heatsink with the dual fan where so big...... that block a small area of air. just fyi most aio for tr4 and the new version are made by sub company . from the main aio name. that why all those tr4 aio had issues |

You don't have to purchase an AIO using basic Asetek AIO hardware. There are better choices that don't cost that much more than the generic Asetek coolers. You just have look for them at proper water cooling vendors and not the big box stores like Amazon or Newegg.com. For example the Alphacool Eisbaer 280 AIO with the TR4 mount kit would be a step up from the typical Asetek AIO cooler. If you have to use a AIO, I would steer clear of the Enermax TR4 coolers because they have had multiple and frequent quality control problems with corrosion. But you still need the full coverage cold plate. The only other one I am aware of is the new Coolermaster ML360 TR4 RGB edition that has a full coverage cold plate. Because it is relatively new, it does not have many reviews yet. https://www.amazon.com/Alphacool-11287-Eisbaer-280-CPU/dp/B01HQ6DE4O https://www.newegg.com/p/2YM-0007-00188 https://www.performance-pcs.com/water-cooling/aio-all-in-one/alphacool-eisbaer-280-cpu-black-ac-11287.html https://www.performance-pcs.com/water-cooling/water-block-accessories/accessories-cpu-blocks/alphacool-amd-threadripper-epic-tr4-sp3-mounting-bracket-for-eisbaer-eisblock-silent-loop-incl-screws-ac-12875.html https://www.newegg.com/cooler-master-masterliquid-ml360-rgb-tr4-edition-liquid-cooling-system/p/2YM-0004-00023 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I hope that nobody was shocked by the price. After all, it is commensurate with an Epyc workstation/server processor. Its got me to wondering. If a version 1 EPYC 1 socket cpu with a "workstation" motherboard might do just as good a job running an out-sized load of gpu's? It is clear it would process the cpu tasks slower... Here is one mobo with Epyc 32 core processor for you. Six slots, three X16 and three X8. Wouldn't be much slower than the Threadrippers. https://www.newegg.com/supermicro-mbd-h11ssl-i502p-ma015-o-single-amd-epyc-7000-series-processor/p/N82E16813183690 And its bigger brother at 64 cores. https://www.newegg.com/supermicro-mbd-h11ssl-n702p-ma015-o-single-amd-epyc-7000-series-processor-socket-sp3/p/N82E16813183689 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I hope that nobody was shocked by the price. After all, it is commensurate with an Epyc workstation/server processor. The membership of the OFA is self-nominated. You can join at any age. But best practice is at least 55 and you can hold off joining until you are 64 where it become "mandatory". Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |
