Message 2010910 - Posted: 6 Sep 2019, 13:00:14 UTC - in response to Message 2010873.

Distressing news today from an insider. The expected new Threadripper cpus made from Zen 2 chiplets will not be pin compatible with existing X399 motherboards. They will require new sockets and motherboard designs and chipsets.

So the idea I had of simply dropping a Threadripper 3920X into my X399 motherboard is now squashed.

I am sorry to hear that, but it seems reasonable. More direct memory channels apparently need more pins...... I wonder if they will simply use the EYPC socket.....

Amazon currently has some killer deals going on now for Ryzen and Threadripper processors.
Like $199 for a 2700X and $378 for a TR2920X.

That's pretty awesome. If for some reason anyone needs a gen 1 Ryzen CPU simply for updating motherboards, the Ryzen 3 1200 is on sale for $60 on Newegg. Promo code cuts another $8 off the price as well.

I saw that. It makes me wish I was willing to spend the money. With that number of Pcie lanes/channels whatever and the 1 to 4 extender cards it might be the reliable, cheap path to a very high count gpu system with a respectable core/thread count (eg. more than 4c/8t which is all Intel is offering for mining MB's).

The number of available PCIe lanes is irrelevant when using the 4-to-1 expander cards. These cards only use a single lane and switch between the attached devices to send the data along that single lane.

All the other lanes are going to waste in this scenario.

The limits are always what the BIOS can handle in terms of number of PCIe devices and/or memory mapping.

Another argument for not spending any more money experimenting :(

I was able to update to Win 10 1903. I have a Ryzen 3400G with 16G Corsair Vengence 3000Mhz.
Board is now MSI 570-A Pro
this let me go into game mode.
All 8 threads are now operating at 4150MHz previously maxed at 3900MHz.
With AIO single radiator cooler, temps are now at 75C.

From the reviews, all the X570 boards are capable of much greater memory clock speeds. Good job getting "game mode" to work and allow all eight threads to boost to 4150Mhz.

I am hearing mutters of 3950x on September 30th. Anyone got a better clue?

I suspect the 3950x's will be drawing from the same production line as the 3900x. So we are likely to see even more of a shortage....

I heard late November. TSMC is unable to supply enough production of 7nm parts because of the Apple phone launch this week for the A13 cpu for that phone. So until Apple gets all their production request filled, AMD gets short-shrift.

I played around with the latest BIOS for my C7H motherboard this afternoon. It had the newest AGESA 1.0.0.3 ABBA code in it meant to squelch all the rabble rousing complaints that the Ryzen 3000 cpus aren't hitting their advertised max clock core clocks. That conversation is a can of worms for another day. Read Dr. Ian Cutress's article at AnandTech about common misconceptions from decades of Intel communications. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14873/reaching-for-turbo-aligning-perception-with-amds-frequency-metrics-

Anyhoo, I decided to see what my R9-3900X could achieve on the Geekbench4 tests. I didn't do any of the max overclocker adjustments bandied everyday on the OCN OC forums. I just set things in Auto and selected the Performance Enhancement 3 mode in the BIOS and let the cpu and motherboard figure things out for themselves.

I managed to get within 25Mhz of the advertised 4600Mhz max boost clock in the GB4 benchmark.

"processor_frequency": {
"minimum": 3987,
"maximum": 4572,
"median": 4569,
"mean": 4563,
"stddev": 55.012630505762402,

https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/14646684

So the cpu was definitely boosting pretty good now. About 150Mhz than what the previous AGESA code in the previous BIOS could achieve.

Bonus, the new 2801 BIOS fixes the fans shutting off issue that had me flustered when I first got the 3900X.

AMD Epyc CPUs Claim 14 World Records With Red Hat...

AMD's Epyc Rome processors were able to break world records in performance for various data center-specific workloads, using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 and RHEL 8 operating systems (OSes)...

... Not surprisingly, Red Hat feels the new world records prove that its enterprise-focused OS excels at handling scalable workloads. Its software has proven itself even when running on hardware with a high number of cores, such as AMD’s new Epyc CPUs...

Apparently it's official- (sometime in) November

We are focusing on meeting the strong demand for our 3rd generation AMD Ryzen processors in the market and now plan to launch both the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X and initial members of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor family in volume this November. We are confident that when enthusiasts get their hands on the world’s first 16-core mainstream desktop processor and our next-generation of high-end desktop processors, the wait will be well worth it.

I guess AMD has a thing for 24. Whether it is threads (3900x) or the 3rd gen Threadripper that might be out in November.

Just will have to wait until November and see what AMD offers. Still no clear insight whether the Threadripper 3 cpus are pin compatible with the old X399 TR4 sockets.
