I’ve got myself an ASUS X570-P with Ryzen 5 3600 to build as a GPU cruncher. It’s destined to replace an X370-Pro/Ryzen 1700. The GPU (GTX1660Ti) will be swapped into the new build.

And i installed my 3700X.

Love to see what it could do later. Don't have time now. Happy to see that 18.04 works as intended.

Message 2002098 - Posted: 11 Jul 2019, 13:30:11 UTC - in response to Message 2002032.

Test results and summary about what I expected. AMD is back on top for consumer general purpose cpus. Need to see more reviews of Ryzen Gen. 3 on older X470 motherboards.

From the later tests and reviews comparing the same Ryzen 3000 cpus on X570 mobos against X470 mobos with the same memory kits, the X570 boards have a slight advantage in memory speeds over X470 motherboards.

Still, it's great you can just drop the new processor into the same socket on your X470 or X370 motherboard and get better memory speeds than you were able to achieve on the X370 and X470 motherboards.

Proves it wasn't the motherboard or memory sticks that held back the memory speeds on the earlier generations. It was the IMC in the earlier cpus that limited the memory clocks.
There were a few Youtube videos I watched last night about the X570s. One from Hardware Unboxed showed that there was not a huge difference in performance using the same Zen 2 CPU, whether it was in a B350 or an X570 motherboard. However, you need to be careful with overclocking, as the VRM might reach temperatures greater than desired. Additionally, Der Bauer has a video showing power draw on the X570 chipset. His video demonstrated that there is a significant power draw on the chipset even at idle, with no PCIe 4.0 devices connected to the motherboard.

I know the additional power draw of the X570 chipset may be insignificant compared to the draw of a high-end GPU, but to me I don't know that the additional front end cost of the motherboard or the additional power I will consume is worth it. I don't think PCIe 4.0 has any significant benefit to Boinc at this time.

Looks like AMD have made a good splash:

AMD Ryzen 3000 Dominates Intel on Amazon Best-Selling CPUs List

... AMD is absolutely killing it right now, as seven of the top 10 best sellers in the PC CPUs category hail from camp AMD.

The AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, currently sits on top of Amazon's list, which is quite shocking considering that the Ryzen 3000-series, codename Matisse, processors were just made available on July 7...

At last, some positive competition unfolds?

IT is what we make it...

Here is a link where they ran a couple of Ryzen 3000's on a B350 MB.

https://www.techspot.com/review/1872-ryzen-9-on-older-motherboards/

The results show the power limitations of that B350 MB under heavy computation load(s).

Now if we can find a similar review for the X470 MB's it should give us a good idea about if switching to the 3000 series is a good choice for Seti/Boinc.

And/or if any of the early adopter's report "too hot" issues.

Looks like it is this one: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8600449

Which apparently isn't running Seti on the cpu side so we can't get a compare to the performance of the Zen 1+'s cpus. I am assuming that the gpu performance won't vary much.

Hardware Unboxed did a comparison between X470 and X570 boards and found no significant differences. As long as the VRM's are a halfway decent design, there should be no issues.

Yes. Youre correct.

If someone want to point out a simple link to a working benchmark set i could do some benches 4 u later.

Are on a phone and cellular atm.

I find Rick's (RuieKe) benchmark app the easiest to use. Already comes with a selection of WU to bench, but you can always add your own current species into the Test WU folder.

I bought the first part of my new system today, 32GB of Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-3200 memory. It came with 20% off the normal price, so why not. :)

Assume that was 2 X 16GB. Why so much memory? Ryzen, even Gen. 3 does better with single rank memory, though I've been reading the IMC in the new I/O die does much better with dual rank memory than the previous IMC's in the earlier models.

As for why 32GB? For the have. And for just €183,95, while this memory can overclock itself to 3466MHz on its own. Besides, I may still go for a Radeon VII videocard, which has 16GB. It'll be a weird configuration to have as much memory on the videocard as there's in the system. And the new Ghost Recon Breakpoint looks to be needing 16GB on recommended, so better have more.

Also start checking your bios and adjusting your voltages across the board.... several youtubers like JayzTwoCents (recent overclocking video on Ryzen 3000) have found stock voltages on auto to be way too high out of the box. Just a heads up...

Buy now before the cards get totally out of reach when the price gougers snap up all the leftover stock.

Well, if you can actually use the RAM, then go for it. I barely touch 5GB of my 16GB on all my Ryzen 7 systems all the time. Same goes for the Threadripper. Never seen more than 5GB in use. A lot of wasted RAM space out of 32GB.

So what are the rumors for an AMD replacement? Wait till the next gen of Navi?

I have. And I still do not see any reason to try and overclock the RAM beyond what is normally achievable with Rzyen+

It just does not scale well for our Seti Compute loads. Since I don't game I have no need for 4000Mhz memory with its high latencies. Best to keep the IF fabric at 1:1 at 3600Mhz and below. From the charts posted in your referenced link, sticking to 3200 @ CL14 matches 3600 @ CL17. Since I already run my memory at 3466Mhz @ CL14, I don't have much to gain, more likely lose. Now if I can achieve 3600Mhz @ CL14, then that would be the sweet spot.

I guess. GCN architecture is dead. The last using it was the Radeon VII. The new rDNA architecture is the development platform for AMD now. Whatever follows Navi will use it and hopefully does better on the power usage and better performance or Nvidia will continue to eat AMD's lunch for graphics cards.
