Really?... The end of Windows 10?!!

Hi Martin,

And here I thought, back in 2015, that WINDOWS 10 was going to be the last Winders coming out of Redmond, Washington. So much for thinking... :-\

Have a great day! :)

Ahhhh... But it is still "Windows 10"...

It is just being arbitrtraily re-painted and re-badged...

Is this just the Marketing division unimaginatively desperately clinging onto old ways?

The Microsoft Sales Team will be hungrily dribbling over the new packaging and merchandising 'opportunities'...

While they keep the OS and change the paint job, they will also completely change how every administration task is completed, wasting untold millions of hours of prior training and experience.

So they can sell new training and certification.

Greetings,

Well, here's a video of Windows 11 from PC World. I watched the video and even though I hate Winders and Micro$oft, I was impressed with the changes except for one glaring discovery; the app windows are no longer re-sizable.

The questions I now have are these: Will Micro$oft "give" it away like they did with Winders 10? What will be the EOL for Winders 10? Why does Windows 11 look so much like Winders 10 just with a new suit on?

Have a great day! :)

Well I may be an "old dog" but I still like moving with the times and learning "new tricks"

Having watched some "unofficial" reviews I will definitely give it a try as soon as it is released.

I suspect it will find its way onto any of my machines that will take it.

Looks like a big step forward in quality of life improvements and rumor has it it might even "game" a bit better, looks a bit like Vista which was always my favourite.

I'm very leery of the latest rebadging for that which is nominally called "Windows 11" for the sake of:

  • "Thou must have an internet connection and be connected to an online account with Microsoft".

And that, with that, they can turn you off.

What other telemetry and intrusive Marketing goes with that?...

I have a very small, cheap, low-power Celeron device, which I use for testing. It cost under £200, including the Windows 10 Pro licence.

I used it to illustrate a WCG GPU problem (we discussed it in this forum), which involved installing an Intel profiling tool. That hooked itself into the Microsoft account (which I'd allowed to be set up for testing, too - fat lot of advertising revenue they're going to get out of that). Then, Intel tried to use the Microsoft cloud storage as temporary workspace - and tried to use more than Microsoft would allow me to use without paying a surcharge.

So I fixed their problem by disabling the account and disentangling the registry entries for the cloud storage. Now, it persists in showing me:

Windows 11 could turn its nose up at your CPU
If your chip's not on the list, you're not coming in. Even you, Surface Studio 2

Windows 11 is a good deal more choosy and starts at the eighth generation.

The eighth generation of Intel processors, codenamed Coffee Lake, turned up in 2017.

The change means that while Windows 11 might install on older kit, there is every chance that setup will probably go kaboom when you least expect it.

Well, for what it's worth, my i7 7700K CPU DOES support TPM 2.0.
I DON'T know if the straight up 7000 does, though. (A good maybe on that one....)
A friend of mine and my dad both have i7 7700 Systems.

Even though my System DOES support TPM 2.0, I'd have to investigate the Hackintosh Community
and see what restrictions there may be to my Dual Boot MacOS Mojave 10.14.6, and Win 7 Pro x64
System - IF I choose to think about upgrading to Win 11. It's already complicated enough to set a
MOBO BIOS properly just to get MacOS to boot properly... I don't know what ramifications
in activating TPM 2.0 on my Gigabyte GA-H270-HD3 MOBO would be to MacOS.

IF anyone has knowledge in this area, I'd greatly appreciate feedback on this.

TL

[EDIT:]

Well in reading the Article Linked in the last Post, "Secure Boot" MUST be 'Enabled' for Win 11 to run....
I CANNOT find that Setting mentioned in my current open Hackintosh Tabs in Firefox; BUT, IF memory
serves, (without actually rebooting my machine and going into my BIOS to check), I believe that
"Secure Boot" is 'Disabled' for Clover Hackintoshes.

So, I WON'T be moving to Win 11. However; I WILL be investing into a Win 10 Pro DVD Installer
before the end of the year so that I MAY be able to have a copy on hand for the eventuality of moving up to 10.

Looks like there might be a way around the TPM 2.0 requirement. At least until MS, in their infinite wisdom, decides to protect us from ourselves.

TWO DECADES later and...

A lot has happened in those two decades:

Microsoft Quietly Released Its Own Linux Distro

Nobody tell Steve Ballmer...

... Ballmer said in 2001 that "Linux is a cancer" ... A lot has changed since then ... in 2018 that Microsoft was the world's largest contributor to open source projects ...

So. Yeah. Microsoft has released a Linux distro that anyone can download, install, and use for their server- and edge-based projects. Welcome to 2021.

What of Windows 10 and Windows 11?... (Whatever did happen to "8" and "9"??)

Is this the end of the daily BSODs?...

Is this also the end of the infamous tech support opener...

Is this another example of how Microsoft Windows is so suspiciously 'easy' to 'pirate'?...

And we already have Windows 11 'quality' problems:

Meanwhile, we have a gaping wide open hole that so far, is not to be fixed!

Microsoft Outlook shows real person’s contact info for IDN phishing emails
wrote:
IDN homograph attacks were a problem to begin with. Outlook just made 'em worse.

If you receive an email from someone@arstechnica.com, is it really from someone at Ars? Most definitely not—the domain in that email address is not the same arstechnica.com that you know. The 'i' character in there is from the Cyrillic script and not the Latin alphabet...

... And it turns out Microsoft Outlook is no exception, but the problem just got worse: emails originating from a lookalike domain in Outlook would show the contact card of a real person, who is actually registered to the legitimate domain[!]...

Outlook shows real contact’s info for spoofed IDN domains

... demonstrated how they were able to trick the Address Book component of Microsoft Office to display a real person's contact info for a spoofed sender email address by using IDNs...

... allow anyone on the internet to spoof contact details of employees within an organization using an external look-alike Internationalized Domain Name (IDN)," wrote the pentester in a blog post. "This means if a company’s domain is 'somecompany[.]com', an attacker that registers an IDN such as '?omecompany[.]com' (xn--omecompany-l2i[.]com) could take advantage of this bug and send convincing phishing emails to employees within 'somecompany.com' that used Microsoft Outlook for Windows."...

... traced the cause of the issue to Outlook not correctly validating email addresses in Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) headers...

... the problem in Outlook is that for a phishing email sent from an IDN, the recipient [victim] may not only fail to distinguish between the spoofed email address and the real one but also see the contact card of a legitimate contact, therefore falling victim to the attack.

It is unclear if Microsoft is inclined to fix the issue in Outlook at this time:

"We've finished going over your case, but in this instance, it was decided that we will not be fixing this vulnerability in the current version,"...

And that is a costly trap that too many will unwittingly fall victim to.

Yet, for Microsoft to not fix that?!...
