MS to Fix Broken Windows Update with New Rollout
Microsoft is trying a new method for releasing and managing Windows 10 updates. The aim is to reduce the number of bugs where an update doesn't install properly.

The plan involves combining two types of updates: cumulative and servicing stack updates, which were previously released separately.

I've been busy for a few days converting some rather old Linux systems over to some new hosting elsewhere on some very different Linux systems...

OK, so we had the completely expected problem of somewhat different configs, but that was expected.

What has really impressed me is that even for some radical conversions of databases, once we realigned the configs to the new formats: It is all just working. Fantastic.

The big 'take-home' aspect is the visibility available of what is happening on a Linux system (systemd obfuscation excepted!). We have complete control of what updates we use and what versions we can migrate through, or even the choice of a nuclear-option conversion in one big jump via a standards compliant jump. There always seems to be a way, and it works.

In painful contrast, I still have nightmares from when I was given a Windows based database that Must Be Recovered to find that it was an obscure proprietary version with no compatibility with anything current. That one took some country-wide contacts to spirit up a virtual machine archive from elsewhere in the country 'as a favor' so that we could even get to take a look at what the data was. Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!! (That one cost a few beers!)

Lock-in is simply bad. Don't accept it!

... So, while your computer might not freeze when printing, what comes out of the printer for affected users might still be absolute garbage.

The Register reader who originally reported the problem to us confirmed the issue and told us that as well as BSODing systems, some drivers were leaving blocks of whitespace.

"The BSOD seems fixed," he said, "but white space is still there. So KB5001567 only half fixes the problem."...

We don't know why the tests came out this way, but presumably, Microsoft has added some extra optimizations to Windows 10 we don't know about. We will have to do our own research into the matter to see what is really going on...

See also the Phoronix source article...

Truly some good optimizations?

Or merely a sloppy lack of security mitigations in the Windows version?

Or even is this a new twist on "Naughty Intel" twistiness??

Interesting non-the-less for what is happening!

I flipping hate Win10 & its crap!
Approx. 20 min ago, noticed my RAC down by approx. 500.
Checked this rig, no problems.
Checked Win 10 rig - ouch.
A new update installed.
Instead of asking for the pin it wanted my password to "verify" it is me. WTF?
Entered password twice, both times got "incorrect".
Okay - reset it.
Got code to mobile & entered, reset & thought ok, job done.
Now back to this rig (Win 7), entered e-mail. Password incorrect, ok, thought that might happen, so entered new password...
...incorrect - old password.
WHAT?
Just reset the flipping thing. Okay, had this crop up numerous time with M$ crap so tried new tactic after a further 2 attempts failed.
Bingo, good to go, except now had to restart Boinc manually.
When these rigs give up the ghost, there is no way in hell, M$ will see sight of new rig!
Funny thing is...
...on reboot, it asked for PIN. It remembered that but not the password?
Sheesh.

Zorin OS 16 beta claims largest built-in app library 'of any open source desktop ever'
wrote:
Linux for Windows switchers...

... Zorin is a Linux distribution aimed at switchers from Windows or Mac, and endeavours to offer a polished user experience and a minimum of fuss. It is offered in both free and commercial versions, with the paid-for Ultimate Edition priced at £39 ($53), and free Core, Lite and Education editions...

... Version 16 is expected this summer, and in the meantime the public beta has just been released. This is not a cutting-edge Linux; it is based on Ubuntu 20.04, “Focal Fossa”, a long-term support release...

... Windows apps can be installed “optionally using WINE,” the release said, and added the claim that “Zorin OS 16 has the largest library of apps available out of the box of any open source desktop ever.”

The Store has been a focus of attention and merges all these sources into one application. If an application is available from more than one source, the user can select from a Source dropdown...

... The Core edition has a somewhat Windows-like appearance including a taskbar which shows application previews as you move the mouse over its icons. A Zorin Appearance utility lets users select a different desktop layout as well as changing themes. A Windows 10X-like layout (yes, the new Windows 10 that Microsoft has yet to release) is “coming soon” to Zorin Ultimate, the organisation said. There is also a Jelly mode which makes windows wobble when moved or resized; fortunately this is off by default...

... Early users of Zorin 16 in this forum thread express delight with the improved performance and report that the Software Store is also much improved, though as you would expect there are also gripes about details of the revamped user interface. Overall though, it look like the forthcoming release will be welcomed.

What the ...!

Really?...

... As it turns out, the same issue existed earlier this month when the patches were optional, but now they’re rolling out to everyone with the same problems still present...

... The solution here is one we’ve seen before: Uninstall the offending update...

... However, Microsoft is just going to try and install the patch again. You’ll also have to go in and pause automatic updates...

... If you’ve got the other version of this update, just swap in that KB identifier...

... There are also some scattered reports of blue screens and boot loops...

... here we are again just a month later. Such is life with Windows in 2021.

That shouldn't be happening to users...

Hi Martin,

Good thing I quit gaming then. This PC and my new laptop are running v20H2. They haven't been "updated" for quite some time now. ;-)

Perhaps Micro$oft should just give up on Winders 10 for good. :-)

Have a great day! :)

There might be a fix for the borked Win 10 Update that is causing high CPU use when nothing is running:
Windows Update May Solve High CPU Usage Bug

The main point of interest in KB5001391 is a fix for a memory problem. Microsoft hasn't made things entirely clear but it appears it's targeted at recent reports of users suddenly seeing their CPU usage rocket to the point that their computer slows down or even becomes unresponsive. And for turning around again, we have this for the latest tests:

Windows 10 Build 21370 vs. Ubuntu 21.04 Linux On AMD Ryzen 5900X
... That unexpectedly strong showing for Windows 10 might be due to Intel's P-State behavior with Rocket Lake or other power management tuning ... it led me to wondering if the latest Windows 10 updates spelled out anything different on the AMD Ryzen side... So here are some benchmarks of the latest Microsoft Windows 10 against Ubuntu 21.04...

What a curious difference for those results!

Microsoft to unveil next generation of Windows on June 24
Microsoft is teasing major changes in store for Windows but exactly what the company plans to unveil is a mystery for now. The fact that the difference between 10 and 11 is going to be functionally less than what's happened under the bonnet every year of Windows 10's life is irrelevant.

There's not much we can do, except decline the hype. Windows 11 signals the end of that brief period of sanity in Microsoft where it acknowledged that software these days isn't upgraded by shipping tonnes of magnetic domains or optical pits once every three years. The fruits of that are too sweet to pass up, even if the flavour's entirely artificial these days.

Get angry if you must at the rolling back of reality. Utilise weary disdain by all means, it helps. And if you must look on the bright side, at least we're rid of Skype. ®
