Greetings,

2018-11 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) - Error 0x80070643

The above update, KB4023057, shows up in my update history page 3 times. I saw a notification in the panel and found the above error in Windows Update.

This website explains what is going on and how to fix the problem.

Windows 10 v1803 and older are only affected, v1809 is not. That is not reason enough for me to go ahead and let 1809 creep onto my PC... yet.

Have a great day! :)

Since Microsoft took over Skype, it's become impossible to remove your Skype account. I've just been busy trying to get rid of my Skype account, nope.
I can change things, but if I want to change for instance my avatar, I have to install Skype... it's not possible to do this from the Skype account web site. Nor is it possible there to unlink your account from your email, or actually delete it. I don't think it's GDPR compliant.

GDPR ruined Boinc Stats for E@H IMO. Due to that buzz kill I have reduced my contribution there by 1/3.

Why so?

Just enable the export of your stats in your e@h account settings.

Good and easy and exactly as it should be! The GDPR has usefully ensured that you know that others can track your data and given you an easy unfettered choice about that.

(And ALL the Boinc projects should follow likewise... Follow-up for a GDPR discussion thread?...)

And to get back on-topic: Shame that as far as I can tell, Microsoft appears to care nothing for GDPR other than for moving Microsoft assets to be somehow 'out of reach' from being easily chased up for GDPR compliance... As always seems to be the case, the users be damned!

1-21-2019

Well, Farragut, (dad's i7 7700 System), just performed an "Auto" Update... I had reported some time ago that I had set to Delay the 1903 Update on this System... NOW; INSTEAD of having 1903 Installed, IT INSTALLED 1809!!!!! 😱😨😯😧😮😲

All data "seems" to be intact. BOINC reports that the Intel Driver DID NOT get Updated, and SETI@Home Units ARE Crunching.

I'll need to have dad check out his Quickbooks program and data... (Requires a Login Password that I don't have...)

So, we were one of the unlucky few to have the October Update forced upon us... I'll also need to check out dad's laptop and see if this, too, is going to be forced to 1809.

TL

[EDIT:]

Just looked back at the old Thread... I was mistaken... It WAS 1809 that I postponed back in December. So, NOW dad is "stuck" with it unless I "roll back" the Update.

The answer is that most of the E@H crunchers have not opted to export stats so most of the people I was "competing' with are gone from BOINC Stats.

Just enable the export of your stats in your e@h account settings.

I did that

why betreger, do you think they (non-export) just might not be in competition to see who can spend he most on electricity and actually be interested in doing science and not care about stats?

The inevitable, long overdue, finally happens?

... to be disappointed as Windows 10 Mobile death date set...

Microsoft has formally set the end date for support of its all-but-forgotten Windows 10 Mobile platform...

Tom's Hardware has picked up on the story also:

Microsoft Ending Windows 10 Mobile Support, Encourages Switch to iOS, Android

If you're still on a Windows 10 Mobile device, this is the year to jump...

... Microsoft will end support on December 10, 2019...

So... What happened? Or not?

IT is what we make it...

Then also PM those you're competing with to ask if they will tick their export tick-box?

Or even start a thread over on e@h?

Greetings,

YEEEE HAAAAAAAA!!!!!

I just had a security update from Micro$oft. I didn't have to fix my video!!! Micro$oft did not change my driver this time. Woohoo!!!!! :D

Have a great day! :)

Siran

I forced the ver. 1809 upgrade this morning and here's what I found. The 1809 build 17763.292 upgrade will install ALL drivers, regardless of policy settings. It seems that the group policy settings that we've set are for quality updates only, not for major build upgrades. So not truly trusting M$S in updating my NVidia drivers to what I expect, I did a clean install of them prior to starting BOINC after the upgrade. You'll notice that I used the word UPGRADE instead of update, for that is in essence is what it is..

Hi Cliff,

Dang, I'm still on 1803.

I haven't thought to check since going to Windows 10, but does msconfig still exist? I'll probably answer that question myself when I finish this post. I need to stop BOINC from auto-starting upon reboot before such an "upgrade" happens to this PC.

I was reading somewhere yesterday that Micro$oft is sending 1809 out to the masses now that it has "looked into the issues" that happened last year. Perhaps it's time to byte the bullet and let it happen.

I was looking into Linux again this morning and I am so tempted. It looks like I can get Windows stuff to work in Wine. I just gotta do a bit of planning ahead.

Have a great day! :)

Siran

[edit2] Looks like it doesn't :( [/edit2]

[edit3] Got it. It's in Settings -> Apps -> Startup. Just flip a switch to "off". [/edit3]

Hi Siran,

Yes msconfig still exists, just key it in the search window. I've found that task manager works very well when I want to enable/disenable BIONC via the startup tab. You are right - they have started to push ver. 1809 out to the masses again. I didn't back it out this time because they seemed to fix a major Edge problem that I had or I've would have been on it a long time ago.

One for Martin this time: Remote Code Execution in apt/apt-get:
tl;dr I found a vulnerability in apt that allows a network man-in-the-middle (or a malicious package mirror) to execute arbitrary code as root on a machine installing any package. The bug has been fixed in the latest versions of apt.

1809 DID NOT Update the Intel HD-630 Driver as it DID Observe and Preserve my Restriction Settings to NOT Update 3rd Party Drivers. HOWEVER; I did go through ALL Blocks to Driver Updates, NOT just Group Policy Settings... (Registry et. al.) [EDIT:] This was on Farragut, my dad's i7 7700 Desktop...

Check your program & Features. You'll see the install date for the driver is the same date as the 1809 install date, so it did install the driver. The current version/build for this driver is 25.20.100.6519. Since I don't use my iGPU for crunching, I'm not all that particular if M$S installs the driver on a major version/build upgrade. NVidia drivers are another matter entirely.

Mine is 23.20.16.4973 NEO; so, again, NO Update done here. [EDIT:] Reported by BOINC in Event Log. [EDIT 2:] I put in the 3rd Party Driver Update blocks after the last discussion of Intel Driver Updates moving to, (what was it), "WHS" instead of "NEO" and that the "WHS" Drivers would NOT work in BOINC...

Negative vibes. I posted it in the Win10 thread because you read here, it's not an anti-Linux post, it's a genuine heads up that there are problems with apt (already fixed) and to update. Geez Louise, do you take all helpful Linux posts this negative?

Hi Cliff,

I used the search and Windows could not find msconfig. Oh well, I got it done anyway without it. ;)

I now have 1809 too and the upgrade did not whack my drivers. They are all safe and sound. Whooh! :) I did have to go into O&O Shutup and revert my spy setting back because Micro$oft decided to change them. Other than that... oh yeah, I had to get rid of those stupid shortcut arrows on my icons... again. Other than that, no problems. Oh yeah, I hate that they have to SLAM Edge into our faces when done with the upgrade. Why?!?! They're dumping it because it's crap anyway. Why do the "in-yo-face" maneuver? Stupid!!!

Have a great day! :)
