As you know Threadrippers are very high-end products. But AMD also sells fast mainstream cpus.

You can get fast 8 core / 16 thread AMD CPUs with the AM4 motherboards.

If you use say the X370 chipset which is supposed to support multiple GPUs and some PCIe expansion cards to deal with the possible shortage of MB PCIe slots.

How many GPUs could you run on what brand/make/model of motherboard?

Tom

ps. it looks like an ASUS B350M-E with a 2400G cpu/gpu can run the internal gpu and 2 discrete gpu cards using the PCIe expansion card.

I had 5 running on my GigaByte board for awhile, But the last riser was touchy and would drop off line, so I removed it for stability.

You can only fit 3 double wide cards native on the X370/X470 motherboards. Any more and you have to deal with risers. Even with 3 cards, you will have one card running in X4 PCIe Gen. 2 speed because of the lack of PCIe lanes. Not a problem with that lane count for Seti but can be an issue on other more demanding projects.

Also, with Radeon cards, ROCm wants PCIe 3.0 and eight lanes so you can only "officially" run 2 cards. Starting with Vega there is some flexibility with those specs.

Brent,
What model of Gigabyte MB are you running?

Thank you.

I'm not now, LOL, it's out on a RMA. But it ran 1080/1070.1060/1060 for almost a year, until it failed to power up after a reboot.
And I just got it working well with a new CPU and monoblock, dang it!
It was kicking Keith's 2700X fleet for awhile until then.

Thank you.

I am thinking about trying out an AM4-based MB with a medium to higher end Ryzen (8 cores/ 16 threads) and all the GPUs I can cram onto it. I have 6 gtx 1060 3GB's, and 3 gtx 750Ti's and two PCIe expansion cards with up to 8 external slots available. I even have an EGA 1600 watt PSU that isn't currently in use.

So I am scratching my head and trying to decide if I want to buy an MB, CPU and reuse my other two sticks of CL14/3200 ram. :)

Keith,
You have both the
Thermaltake Core X5 Tempered Glass Edition E-ATX Stackable Black Cube Chassis CA-1E8-00M1WN-02
which is $169 on NewEgg and the
Thermaltake Core X9 Black E-ATX Stackable Tt LCS Certified Cube Chassis CA-1D8-00F1WN-00
which is $157 on NewEgg.

For the $12 difference in price is there anything to choose between them?

What model of Ryzen 7 would you recommend as "best bang for the buck" in the 8 core/16 thread models? Yes, I am going for "value" here not absolute best speed at cpu crunching.

I think the X9 is the better deal at a cheaper price. It is bigger so more room to cram more stuff inside. Plus with the X9 you can purchase another perforated side panel to replace the standard clear side panel for better ventilation. It has always been listed as an accessory on the TT website. I haven't got Thermaltake to offer a replacement perforated side panel for the X5 case. They said a replacement would have to come out of a scrapped or returned case. So far nothing from them on availability after 3 months. So the X5 is limited with ventilation to just one side.

As long as you have the desktop real estate for the X9, I would go with that one. It is 4 inches deeper than the X5 case.

If you are going to drive a multi-gpu rig you are going to need cores to feed them. So I would either go with the straight 2600 or 2700 cpu since you don't need the speed out of them from the X models.

For Seti ir doesn't matter much, but for other projects the 1700X/1800X have more PCI lanes than the Gen2 CPUs - I forget what the 1700/1800 non X have.
Maybe something to consider there for multi GPU.

? ? ? ? The AM4 socket is the same between Gen. 1 Ryzen and Gen.2 Ryzen. Each generation has 20 PCIe lanes. 16 from the cpu and 4 more from the X370 or X470 chipset.

Brent,
I forgot to ask. Does that MB have a start button on the motherboard? So I could run it in a miners rig chassis without having to come up with a starting button?

Brent,
Do you know how many more PCIe lanes? I am interested in the maximum available lanes.

Thank you. I think I spotted a power switch on the MB in question but having this kind of switch is always useful so I ordered it.

I was thinking about this and realized since my goal was an outsized gpu setup that a miner rig would make more sense. And it was cheaper at $20 :)

Okay. I have all the pieces ordered. So now I can go back to trying to sell a TR4 MB, a case and a cpu cooler while I am waiting for the pieces to show up.

I already have a workbench/table setup and I have ordered another KVM keyboard/monitor switch so I can run this in a different room with a different power circuit. :) I already have a 2400G in there so I have to share the monitor/keyboard/mouse.
