House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has formally requested President Donald Trump's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service, likely launching a battle with the administration that could stretch months or even years in the courts and could shed light on the President's finances.
In a letter to the IRS sent Wednesday and first obtained by CNN, Neal cites a little known IRS code in his request for six years of Trump's personal tax returns from 2013 to 2018. He also requested the tax returns of eight of Trump's business entities, a nod to escalating pressure from liberals in the caucus who have argued that Trump's personal returns wouldn't sufficiently paint a picture of the President's financial history.
While the move will largely be seen by Republicans as a political escalation, Neal explained in the letter the request is part of his oversight role. Neal wrote that the committee needed Trump's tax returns to consider legislation related to the IRS's practice of auditing sitting presidents.
"Under the Internal Revenue Manual, individual income tax returns of a President are subject to mandatory examination, but this practice is IRS policy and not codified in the Federal tax laws," Neal wrote in a letter to the IRS. "It is necessary for the committee to determine the scope of any such examination and whether it includes a review of underlying business activities required to be reported on the individual income tax return."

He doesn't understand at that level that a tax return is this is how much I want to pay, this is what they know I have to pay on, now work out the rest, which they don't know, so it looks reasonable to the red flag computer.

Of course he has never seen a form 668, so he has no idea how the game is played.

Now if a TCMP audit happens, well, then they are going to know everything and the taxpayer will have to pay toe correct tax, not what he wants to pay. Game over.

I bet Mueller found some "cash" that was forgotten "by mistake" to be included in income. There is no statute of limitations on tax fraud.
It will be fun tracing the Mueller found money and seeing where or if it was reported as income to the IRS!

President Donald Trump wanted to fast-track the IRS chief counsel's nomination through the Senate and suggested it was more important than Attorney General William Barr's nomination, a source with knowledge of the conversation said in a New York Times report published on Thursday.

Trump reportedly broached the topic regarding his IRS pick, Michael Desmond, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on February 5, according to The Times. Trump told McConnell that Desmond was aggravated by the prolonged process and had even considered withdrawing from consideration, The Times' source said.

Desmond, a former tax attorney at the Justice Department and Treasury Department, was confirmed three weeks later.

Desmond briefly advised the Trump Organization sometime between 2008 and 2011, according to a Bloomberg report published last year. A spokesman for Desmond reportedly said in a statement that Desmond's work involved a "discrete reporting matter for a subsidiary company that was resolved with no tax impact."
