Hi
I bought the above laptop off eBay as it was cheap and as usual stuck extra RAM in it.
It runs 24/7 and crunches WUs in 6,000 - 7,000 seconds but it has no graphics card.
Is it possible to add one to speed up the WU processing?
TIA
George

You could try to install the latest Lunnatics CPU apps from the Mike site and see how much you could gain in crunching speed.

But be aware, check your laptop temps, IMHO laptops fans and heat dissipation arrays are not made to run 24/7 crunching at 100% of CPU usage. Yes they could run in that conditions but the questions is: for how long?. So keep an eye on the temps and have a happy crunching. If you has trouble with the temps you could try to use a program to control the temp. There are one very good in Fred's site.

I have been able to keep any laptops I have had crunching in the past from frying by using something like "TThrottle" which will limit the cpu and/or gpu temperature to a set level.

TThrottle is from Fred's site, since i not need to use, not remember the right name. LOL

They are from Brazil (where i live before)
They are called "original" from the AB InBEV company
https://www.ambev.com.br/marcas/cervejas/original/
This is their original site in portuguese.
Is one of the cheapest beers there, but heavily used on the "butecos" some kind of street bars their have.

In the advanced power settings, you can set the Max power for the CPU. It is interesting to see how the power consumption drops as you gradually reduce the maximum % CPU setting. As an example, my laptops tend to run 20-30w @ 100%. But reducing the %CPU to 80, 85 or 90% can reduce the power consumptionby about a third. I also put rubber feet or have a workstation/dock for my HP laptops which improves cooling.
I look forward to tuning the GPU with the new SW you mention.

I know that, my warning was about to keep an eye on the temps, by any means, reduce the cpu usage is one of the many ways available. In my laptop i limit the cpu usage to 50% but i not crunch on it anymore. The use of rubber feets or extra fans are another way to help with the cooling.

Razer makes a portable GPU unit called the Core. I don’t know much about it, but it looks like it uses a Thunderbolt connection to the PC. It doesn’t look like your laptop has a Thunderbolt connection, but maybe someone else makes a similar product that will be compatible?

Also, I was running a Lenovo laptop basically 24/7 for over a year. I had to retire it recently for other reasons, but the hardware was in good shape. I used TThrottle, but since I forced the fan to run at full speed I rarely had the performance throttle below 100% for both the cpus and the gpus. I never looked at the power consumption vs cpu/gpu %.

Thanks Bill. Let me have a look on ebay about the core you mention

A few manufacturers have external GPUs these days.
External GPUs tested.
Even with the latest & greatest hardware & current driver support, it's hit & miss as to whether it will work on a given system.
For older systems, the odds are against it.

Dear Grant
Thanks for the eGPU link which I read with interest.
The units are very expensive and hardly worth it, since I buy my laptops when they are out of rental on ebay so they tend to be 4+ years old. Docking stations for my HP laptops are really cheap too <£10, unlike the Thunderbolt 3 stations.
IF I really wanted to ramp up my WU processing then it would be much cheaper to get another 1050 ti for my TU - but this would presumably mean a bigger motherboard?
Thanks again for your help.
Regards
George

Some command line values would give a significant boost to the video card's output.
And that being a Xeon system, probably has at least another PCIE* 16 slot. As long as it has another slot, and there is sufficient space between it & the one presently in use it would just be a case of adding another card- as long as the Power Supply Unit can meet the extra load.

Dear Grant
Following your comment about PCIE slots, I took some images of the TU which show that it does have one spare. There is another but that is hidden under the new graphics card. I have saved these images to a folder, but seem unable to paste them into this message? I could send them as a PM mail?[/list]

According to the Service Manual (Page 16/17) Richard posted in your other thread, the board does have 2 PCIex16 slots available to use. And a 525 Watt power Supply.

Hi George,

You need to have the image(s) hosted on a site then just post the URL to the image(s) in your post here. When I post images I upload them to a folder on my website and post the URLs here. Hope that helps out. :)

Have a great day! :)

525w sounds good but running two GPU cards is going to be a bit expensive, powerwise, so will leave that for now. Thanks for looking
