BOINC Gurus: I'm crunching S@H using an AMD computer with an AM A6-6400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 21 Model 19 Stepping 1] (2 processors) CPU rated at 3.90 GHz. The GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 7400/7500/8300/8400 series (Scrapper) (768MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2. It has a 1TB hard drive and 8 GB of RAM running Windows 7. I put it together two years ago as a bare-bones kit from Tiger Direct. It crunches 24/7/365 and BOINC 7.12.1. Switched to that a while ago and had issues with errors while computing which took me some time to work out (with your help). It also runs Asteroids concurrently. Average work done has slowed down a bit recently, but it's running smoothly. Is there any reason why I should or should not download v. 7.14.2? Does anybody have any experience with this version? I don't wanna have another frustrating period trying to get things working again. Thanks for your always sage advice. Steve Gaber Oldsmar, FL |

Is there any reason why I should or should not download v. 7.14.2? If it's not broken, don't fix it. Unless the new Manager addresses an issue that affects you, I don't see any benefit in updating. Grant Darwin NT |

I'm with Grant - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". There are some folks who demand that one must have the latest BOINC, and I thank them for revealing bugs..... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

If you really want to see the 'dirty laundry' of the most recent BOINC release, drop in on the Github BOINC repository and read through the 'Issues' list the developers are still working on. Lots of bugs to eradicate still. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

If you really want to see the 'dirty laundry' of the most recent BOINC release, drop in on the Github BOINC repository and read through the 'Issues' list the developers are still working on. Lots of bugs to eradicate still. Many of which were first opened 10, 11, 12 years ago, and neglected then. We are slowly working through them, as you say, but at the moment it's still pretty much 'low hanging fruit'. There are some things that you could see, if you looked: we picked some of that low hanging fruit in v7.10. But the work was incomplete, and provoked a bit of a backlash on the BOINC message boards. The results of that second fix are in v7.14, and the result is - total silence. No complaints. So I have some small confidence that we're beginning to get it right. :-) |
