They don't take office the instant the election is over. Until they are sworn a couple months later, everything is on their dime as they are still private citizens.
I see. In the US you have to be very rich to become a member of the Congress or a Senator. What ever happened to "We the people"?
To me it's apparent that in your country you block competent leaders from office because they are not wealthy enough.
Instead you have to chose between Trump and alike.

One of the reasons that many newly elected and non wealthy Senators and Representatives sleep in their offices.

Of course, this is before they are in Office a number of years and become wealthy.

One conclusion is that 'being competent' and 'being wealthy' are unrelated, and are quite possibly mutually exclusive.

As having a Doctorate in Physics doesn't mean you are competent in anything else.

Dismissing the political rhetoric. It also doesn't mean that a Politically Left of Center PhD is not competent in other areas ;)

Back to Topic?

Guessing we are now being subjected to a continuation of the hysterical political rants and accusations by both sides as displayed in Social Media, 24/7 News, etc.

Most, I believe, hoped the ranting, hysteria and name calling would take a rest, at least for a few days after our Mid-Term Elections.

Alas, the Democrat Party, the Republican Party and both sides supporters can't stop :(

That was a cheap throwaway line. But I do seriously worry about a slightly different formulation.

Democracy - proper democracy, proper voting - used to involve real debates, town hall meetings, lots of reading (printed manifestos), lots of thought. People took it very, very, seriously, and felt they had a duty to elect "the right man for the job". And yes, 100 years ago or more, it was usually a man.

Now, it seems to me, that winning a vote seems to be on a par with winning a Saturday night TV quiz - both for the winners, and for the voters.

As was said in the recent SCOTUS scrutiny of Judge Kavanaugh, this isn't a quiz show - it's a job application.

And in two years time, the voters will be deciding the application for the post of Leader of the Free World. I sure hope they choose somebody competent at holding down the job they've applied for.

I've never understood why the U.S. senators get six year terms, and the House Representatives get two year terms.

I've never understood why the U.S. senators get six year terms, and the House Representatives get two year terms.

In they bygone days when the republic was set up it was expected that Senators who were elected by their state legislative body would have served in that body and would be the best of the best so they could serve a longer term and act as a check upon the wildness of the directly elected house. After their election was given to the people, they didn't also put their terms at a sensible number of years. There is also the matter of weirdness of there being two per state but six year terms so some years there is no choice.

This part of the constitution needs some work. Say we keep six years, but term limit to s single term, and we have three per state, votes are per state all three have to agree or the vote is present. Might force us right down the middle, but straight down the middle is progress.

In a Union of States, which the USA is. The 50 States are not inferior nor subservient to the Federal Component. Excepting the power of the Federal Component having authority over Interstate Commerce and Foreign Affairs.

The Interstate Commerce provision was enacted when the Sovereign States, right after our successful revolt against the UK. Instituted commerce tariffs between their States as Sovereign Countries do.

Internally, Washington D.C. is not the American Government. There is no American Government internally, nor does anyone refer to Washington as the American Government, just Washington. It is understood to be 1 of 51 Governments.

IE: If a resident of Florida institutes a lawsuit claiming that the State of Florida has violated their Rights under any provision of the US Constitution. SCOTUS refers to this person as a Citizen of Florida in their lawsuit against the State of Florida.

Think of a possible future United Countries of Europe - U.C.E. United, as with the U.S.A. meaning a Union of.

Except that the whole system is a fraud and only weighted to the rich and greedy.

It is not a proper true democracy in any shape or alternate form, yet you guys try to force true democracy onto others where you guys have no right to be.

Hypocrites abound in the U.S. of A.......

When you guys finally work out for yourselves a true democratic process over there for yourselves then you may have the right to push your views onto others, until then you better do some heavy self reflection of yourselves and your hypocrisy.

And so should the UK, which is equally deficient in those departments - though in its own idiosyncratic way.

Hi Wiggo,

Just another confirmation of what people who believe in people and economy destroying Socialism believe.

The millions of people, some at risk to their lives, attempting to flee similar Ruling Class Systems you support may disagree.

Where are the hordes of Nordic refugees fleeing Scandinavian socialist states hiding?
CNN hasn't found the refugee camps anywhere and not one boat load has shown up on our shores.

No your eyes are working, the O.C. (birthplace of Nixon) had a blue tsunami.

Some people are speculating it is because of prop 187. https://www.cato.org/blog/proposition-187-turned-california-blue If they are right, then give it a few years and the Orange one will have turned the USA blue.

Looking at things like demographics, clamp downs on voter suppression and gerrymandering, I wouldn't be surprised if some or all of the states like, Texas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolina's turn Blue within the next 6 years.
