Hey guys!

I spent some time getting to the bottom of this, and Googling it to death, but it seems to have gone unnoticed. Really wish I could convince BOINC to accept another version of the file I downloaded elsewhere, a full 25MB version from nVidia... but no dice, it always tries redownloading it, deletes the file, and wonders why it can't download it.

The URL for the file "cufft32_32_16.dll" is giving a false "virus/spyware download blocked" message originating from the server (tested from two different connections in different browsers on different machines). Thus, BOINC can't download the file to complete a GPU app download, and it can't start work.

The URL in question is boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/cufft32_32_16.dll

Any hope to look into this?

I get the same message, plus a bit of an explanation, when I try from work. The full message from work is:

Virus/Spyware Download Blocked

Download of the virus/spyware has been blocked in accordance with company policy. Please contact your system administrator if you believe this is in error.

File name: cufft32_32_16.dll

This suggests to me that you are fighting a firewall or anti-virus being "over-enthusiastic", if possible add the server to the safe list, but I do understand that may not be possible in every case.

No, it's definitely, assuredly not a firewall issue (tested from both my home internet and phone on cell data ;) ) -- heck, you got the same message as well. It's being delivered by the server or intercepted by a system on the host side. 100% certain it'll take some fiddling by the fine folks at Berkeley to get this one resolved. Any way to call their attention to it?

BTW, can't rule out a not-entirely false positive; the stats of the pending file are 10x smaller than the 25MB file provided by nVidia - BOINC reports the file being 2.5MB. Maybe this is a case of malware finding its way into the file server somehow? Not likely, but it takes 10 seconds to slide the file through VirusTotal to double check once someone can access it ;)

I'm having the same problem.
I installed Boinc on my new notebook and I'm getting this message for close to a week now...

This is on my personal computer at home (windows 10). I temporarily allowed file type dll, made an exception for the BOINC folder and the boincmgr.exe process in the 'Virus & threat protection' panel of the 'Windows Defender Security Center'; all to no avail... Doesn't seem to be an end-user / client problem.

In the Boinc Manager Transfer tab I see:

'SETI@home cufft32_32_16.dll 0.03% 0.00/2.84 MB 00:00:23 0.00 KBps Download: pending / active / retry in 04:20:21'

with ever-changing 'Download' switching between pending, active, retry (steadily increasing time...).

Has anyone found a solution to this problem yet?

Thank you,
Michael

I'll try again when I get home.

At work we have a very assertive set of anti-virus and malware policies which are all but impossible to get round, at home I have a few "useful" tools that can make life easier.

Tried from home - no joy on a Windows machine....
Or Linux.

Most certainly an issue at the server end :-(

I'll flag it up with those further up the food chain than us.

Same problem here, but only on one of two newly installed machines, both pretty similar spec. One is fine, the other cannot get this file, and so runs only CPU work.
Very annoying.
Have to leave it as is until next week now...

I'll look into it. The UCB Data Center switched to a new firewall configuration. That could have something to do with it.

Similar problem here. Windows 7 professional system.
Tries to download cufft32_32_16.dll. Small start then continually postponing and retrying.
No warnings from virus scanner here. No virus log entries showing problems either.
Seti shows
20/10/2018 3:48:04 p.m. | SETI@home | Started download of cufft32_32_16.dll
20/10/2018 3:48:05 p.m. | SETI@home | Temporarily failed download of cufft32_32_16.dll: transient HTTP error
This same problem is then repeated after the back off delay.

Prevents work using Cuda 32 version.
Note that other versions have downloaded automatically and work with other tasks requiring these versions OK.
Have also tried directly downloading and from NVidia. This is a much larger file size.
Note that the smaller file size appears to correspond to the winzip or RAR compressed file size.
This may be coincidental.
The system will overwrite the cufft32_32_16.dll I have loaded with a 0 byte files size when it tries to download again if new work using it has been tasked. Other CUDA work OK.
Problem is that Task scheduler is insisting on downloading only Cuda32 tasks when abort the existing and request update.

Help would be appreciated.

Until the crew at UBC manage to sort thhings out I fear you are not going to be able to download that file and thus any application that needs it will fail. Iwould suspend using the gpu until Eric gets the green light.
E ric, thanks for starting thhe ball rolling, let's hope it doesn't take too long to find the goal.

Update to problem
Initially locked off further tasks and aborted both the pending CUDA32 tasks and the attempted download.
Restarted allowing tasks today - scheduler is assigning GPU tasks which are only opencl_nvidia_SoG - these are processing OK.

I am getting the same error, but on the event log it shows a Transient HTTP error. Even with the firewall and antivirus turned off.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I have to constantly check on my host to ensure that it has work units to crunch. I'm doing so at a rate of 24x at a time.

Anyway... boinc/seti refuses to download anymore work units for my host because of a stalled download. I understand this.

But it keeps happening/returning. And no matter how long I wait and leave it to do its own thing or manually intervene and retry pending transfers etc. . Unless I abort that download. My host wouldn't get any new work units to crunch.

I even used a new blank hdd and freshly reinstalled windows and fully updated it and I have reinstalled boinc and its still happening.

the file is …
cuft32_32_.dll 2.84MB

any advise on this please ?

Kindest Regards,
John

Still the same ongoing problem, now a week in :(

Is it possible to force-feed BOINC a good copy of the file from some other user, perhaps here in the forum? Then go in, edit the client_state.xml file (C:\ProgramData\BOINC\client_state.xml) to say the download is completed, and it'll accept that file?

I think the hash of the file needs to match. I tried downloading a copy of this file via Google, but the size was way bigger than intended and BOINC kept throwing out the file and trying to re-download it (to meet this error). Pretty safe to assume the file hasn't changed in many years, since the GPU I was hoping to use for this was a real old 2xx-series nVidia card... thus why it wouldn't give me any other work.

So if anyone could check their folder for this file, zip it and post it somewhere, and link to it here, it might help a lot!

No, that's what I meant by "I downloaded from Google". ;) If you can Google it, it's one I already tried... problem is, that file is 10x bigger than the one BOINC is trying to download, so BOINC throws it away and tries downloading it again (and thus fails).

It'd need to be a copy of the file out of someone's BOINC folder...

So you didn't download it "from Google", but from the same site I found.
I've just done a file search on my Windows PC, and can't find the file you are looking for, BUT I am running SETI@Home on it, however I am using the "optimised" applications, so may not need the file.
One thing that may be worth trying - get a clean driver set for the GPU you are trying to use, but be careful NOT to get the latest driver, but one of the "old" ones, pre version 340.52 . Get the driver from the nVidia web site NOT from MS. It would appear this file forms part of the old CUDA 32 set, and so has probably been dropped from newer drivers.
