fiber to the home

I've seen the Google people laying fiber in the streets here in Louisville, but I am curious how they get it to the home. I guess they trench the yards and run it up to the house? Then, I guess they use the home's existing copper, or maybe they will continue the run with fiber to your computer if you want?

Hi Gordon,

I was under the impression that Google put a stop to that some time ago. I don't remember why. Can't be a financial thing; they got more money than... ;)

I'll have to re-google it...

Have a great day! :)

Siran

[edit]
I find that Google did stop running fiber early last year. However, I found very interesting article to read. I was impressed after reading... :)

Google Fiber is all but dead. The problem comes from access to poles and all the bureaucratic B.S. and infrastructure infighting about getting permission to move someone else's plant on the pole to install your own fiber. Only a few cities that were able to negotiate contracts with Google got fiber. I know Kansas City was one of the first. Google decided it wasn't profitable to compete against the CLECS and city owned networks. The biggest driver for fiber in the country today is AT&T particularly in the SouthEast.

Hi Keith,

I edited my post with a link to a very interesting article about Google Fiber. Read it and see what you think. :)

Have a great day! :)

Thanks for the article link. Yes, a very interesting article. I don't know if I attribute the program to some high and mighty Google corporate ideal though. I think they were in it to make a profit like all corporations do. I just think they thought they would have the market all to themselves and didn't think the incumbents would get off their asses so quickly to compete against them.

Well, I don't know what the actual deal is, locally, but there was a recent story about Google Fiber, here:

http://www.wdrb.com/story/39094196/sunday-edition-or-where-is-google-fiber-mostly-in-the-highlands-records-show

I've seen the cuts in the pavement, and the rubberized filler on top, but then I don't see any hubs or exit points. It's kind of mysterious.

I'm on AT&T's U-Verse for internet, and I'm pretty sure it's still copper on above ground telephone poles leading to the cabinet a few streets over from me, but they might have laid their own fiber to the cabinet. I don't know. They did increase my DL speed to 25 from 6, without me asking for it, and when I called them they said it was a free upgrade for me.

You must be relatively close to the CO or local neighborhood cabinet. Sounds like you went from a single pair at 6Mbps to 25 Mbs which would have to have been a short local loop. I just wish my exchange would allow bonded pairs so I could get something faster on the download/upload speeds. Like a 25/5 or even a 50/10 plan. Since most of my traffic is uploads I would like to get something better than my paltry 1 Mbps. I mean the unused pair is just sitting there like a dump lump of coal.

I was out and about this afternoon, and took a picture of how Google fiber has been laying it's stuff in some streets near me. Shallow cuts(not sure how deep), covered with a rubberized compound of some sort. You can see it branches off to the curb where a house is, but I couldn't find any evidence of anybody's yards being dug up for service.

You must be relatively close to the CO or local neighborhood cabinet.

There are two cabinets near me. Both are about 3 blocks away. I think the closest CO building to me is about 3 miles away. All the service lines to the homes in my neighborhood are above ground on poles.

Was just reading some more and just had my hopes dashed.

Bonded ADSL2+ (internet only, internet/VoIP circuits with speeds from .75-18 were in a trial phase for 6-9 months last year.

This is what you have if best speeds are 5 or 10 with no Uverse IPTV option.

These types installs (bonded ADSL2+) were discontinued in February this year for all regions

<<--- Original U-Verse here with TV Package...

Been Upgraded over the years with U-Verse, actually started with 6Mb Internet and moved up from there... Went to 10Mb then 18Mb, then 24Mb. At 24Mb we had to move up to Bonded Pair and change the Gateway.

Currently, we are at 50Mb DL/10Mb UL and still have the U-Verse U-300 TV Package. 50Mb is the fastest allowed here with the current VDSL/VDSL2 Setup. As mentioned by others, earlier, AT&T IS installing Fiber to New Construction Home Development Areas... So far, NO PLANS by AT&T NOR Comcast XFINITY to get FTTP or FTTH for existing customer base.

NO other competition seems to be allowed in the City of Danville, (could also be a Statewide Limitation by State and Local Governments), so NO chance to get FIOS here... :-(

I've tested our 50/10 against Comcast XFINITY's 200Mb DL Business Package. AT&T STILL beats Comcast!!! U-Verse is "Dedicated", NOT shared like Comcast. So, while Comcast still suffers between 3:30 PM/4:00 PM to 8:00 PM when kids get home from school and DEVOUR Internet Usage, I can manage SpeedTest.net Testings showing that we maintain 50/10 at 9AM, 12PM, 4PM and 9PM daily.

Also, since we have the U-300 TV Package, we can have 4 TV Streams going in HD and ONLY drop to the Low 40Mb area due to HD Stream Reserve Rates... (About 2Mb DL drop per HD Stream.) Even so, we can typically record 3 HD Streams, parents can watch the 4th Live Stream in HD, and I can be on Plex pulling from a Florida Server delivering to me in California and NOT suffer lag, drops, nor screen freezes in Plex on my PC or on my MacPro 5,1.

If we could revert back to testing forum code for a moment...

David has tweaked again and invited further testing. As in:

David Anderson wrote:

Forums are now readable (w/ zoom-out) on phones, with no horizontal scrolling.
At least on my phone.
Have at it, and let us know how you get on.

...weird........

On my phone the forum (this thread) initially loads "correctly, but after about a second flashes to needing scrolling.
Previously it went straight to needing scrolling, so "half-way" there.

Curious - I looked on my phone, and couldn't see any difference. Only problem was in scrolling through the long thread, the phone sometimes mis-interpreted the gesture as a 'zoom' rather than a 'scroll', and I had to reset.

The only suggestion for your 'mode switch' I can think of might be if it reached a wide post a long way down the list, and adjusted to accommodate that?

@ all - I heard some bad news overnight, which is going to keep me quite busy. Please compare notes amongst yourselves, and package together any problems (with evidence) so that I can pass it upstream easily.

Now "jammed" in need to scroll mode, after accidentally doing a restart.

This image thing really is a nuisance.
Going through many older threads now is a PITA as you have to scroll back and forth to read posts that aren't wrapping due to images somewhere in that thread, that weren't a problem before.
