Do you have automatic image re-sizing enabled for your browser?
I use Firefox here with auto resizing off Grant.

Cheers.

So i'm not sure why you don't have an issue with those oversized images then.

I think oversized images without scaling are always going to be a problem - I would argue against cropping.

The question is, do you have to scroll the whole thread (which would mean that wrapped test in other posts is partially off-screen), or do you have to scroll the post containing the image only?

The original massive non-wrapping url is still a problem.

Couldn't find a ruler, but found a tape measure- the different sized images do require different amounts of scrolling (just that on a large monitor the difference between 1917 & 2133 isn't that great...)
The humble Windows Paint application is useful here. It will always show any image at native size unless another 'view' level is chosen manually. It also shows the pixel count in the status bar, and can be used to rescale images. It doesn't handle many formats, but the commonest photographic (.jpg) and screengrab (.png) formats are supported.

The whole thread.
That's how I noticed something had changed- when posts I could read before were no longer wrapping to my browser window, and then when moving my mouse I noticed the scroll bar on the bottom of the page (I'm not a fan of auto hiding scroll bars).

The large images were both posted so long ago, I can't remember if they were re-sized by the forum or cropped.
I'm thinking re-sized as I don't remember the images posted by Zalster (https://i.imgur.com/hJHbHUh.png) being so large vertically (but it was 5 months ago so they may have been & it just didn't register at the time).

At least one thread still has the side scroll bar at the bottom. I think it is "my computer builds and other projects".

Anyone think of anything else we ought to test?
When can we get rid of that annoying extra CR when using a quote box, so we don't have to start our answer directly at the closing tag of the previous quote?

Anyone think of anything else we ought to test?

Same quote but now with one CR at the end of the end-quote tag.

Edit: also happens as far as I know at [code] and [list]

If your browser isn't set to automatically re-size images it will still occur in several threads.

I am unable to find that option on Chrome. I still suffer.

I do have IE11 set to automatically resize images, yet it doesn't. It used to, just not anymore. Setting my community preferences to display only a very limited number of posts is the only way I've found to limit the tedium of crawling-off 10 inches to the right, and then crawling-back... 10 inches to the left, just to continue reading a sentence because a picture, 3 posts ago or more, isn't doing what it's supposed to.

And that soon stops feeling like a solution when the forums are slow.

Firefox and I don't get on, but images are at least resizing in it, and they also do in a browser Avast dumped on my desktop a few weeks ago. Not sure if any of that was helpful, but I feel loads better for having my moan, so, you know... thank you for listening ;)

Apparently Chrome requires the use of an addon for auto image resizing (plenty of freebies from the Chrome store).
With IE, it's an option in it's settings & I prefer it off, it's just that recently on this site that setting has become an issue.

The non-wrapping text issue with the pre /pre code has been sorted.

To be sure it's the over sized images causing the problem & not something else, you can go to your Account, Message boards and private messages Community preferences settings, and in the Message display section select "Show images as links", Update & then Refresh the thread. If the need to scroll sideways is cleared up, then that confirms it's the large image causing the issue.

Just tried it with my IE11 browser and it's not resizing these images either.

I did try to give it a go on other sites with oversized images, but my internet has just started playing up- download speeds are less than 1/10th of my upload speeds, which are also now pretty crappy as well.
Will try again later if things improve.

Things have improved- automatic image resizing in IE is definitely no longer functional.
Tried it on other sites with oversized images, and they stayed over sized.

In Edge, they're re-sized.

I'm using Chrome on Windows 7: no addon, no manual setting, and last time I checked (early in this thread) images were resizing automatically.

David says "I'm happy with this now. It's been on S@h for a couple of days." Are y'all happy with it too?

I'd be happier if thigs were as they were before- if oversized images didn't cause the need to scroll.
But people shouldn't be posting post images that size anyway.

My biggest concern was the need to scroll for pre /pre items, and that's been fixed.

Doesn't work with IE11 in at least the below included thread. The entire thread is killed by this post (second picture), which is extremely big (5184 X 3888):
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=83240&postid=1953764
It's OK in Chrome, but 'save image as...' gives the dimensions you state - so it's being scaled. I checked the page source:

This a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Line" rel="nofollow"> HighLine </a> pigeon<br />
<br />
<img hspace="8" class="img-responsive" src="https://i.imgur.com/sdHcE1V.jpg?1"> <br />
<br />

Now I'll go and repeat that test in IE.

What the heck has David done this time with the board??
The purpose of the change was to support users with ultra-high res screens (4K and above) who want to use high pixel counts (dpi) for text. I'm running 'full HD' (1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200), and 'smaller' fonts (96 dpi) - fortunately my eyes plus glasses can still cope with that. I'll have to leave it to the home cinema fans to test above that.

I've been running a 4k monitor at 3840 * 2160 with the default text & scaling settings for months now, and hadn't noticed any issues prior to the recent changes.

The pictures was a mistake on my part, which had now been corrected by resizing.

My apologies

Arghhhhhhh... :-)))

I was searching Google, and had just got as far as

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dmqMNC3FLHjKTPKiMES727jSx9Id_RbO

and the image resized as I clicked off 'height: auto'. For a moment, I thought I'd cracked it - but then I couldn't get the stretch back anyhow I tried!

Thanks Bernie, that restored the thread to usable format. Even though some pictures posted there, does not take into consideration that so many people
are still using slower connections like ADSL, or even dialup connections.

I still use ADSL and am not 100meg, just 65 meg download and have never had any problems with pictures here.

I was away recently and was using "hotel Wi-FI" that just about managed 2meg and I have to say I didn't notice the picture threads being any slower to load.

However, if it is a problem I will no long post pictures as I feel they do need at least 1100x800 (which all my usually are) to get a good picture.

And yes I could post links but many may not bother to click them.

Sorry to have caused a problem.

Much of the problem is the need to cater for everybody, at a time when:

  • the complexity of the technical world is increasing explosively
  • designers as working as hard as they can to hide that complexity from end users

So, you get an enormously complex and near-professional resolution camera for free in an everyday bit of clutter - your smartfone. You're encouraged to 'share' with everyone - with no need to consider hosting sites, format, resolution, bandwidth, or any technical detail at all.

Even when I was briefly a mod here - around 10 years ago now - I spent quite a bit of my time guiding users to post images at sizes friendly to bandwidth and the web code used at the time - for all the reasons that Tut states. I don't know what the current mod policy is towards guidance like that, but Bernie (having just been caught out by the problem :P) might like to discuss it with his colleagues. Reading the internet, the image problem with Internet Explorer is widely known and discussed, but Microsoft are showing no sign of curing it.
