Hello guys (and gals?),

I have tried to ask this question for help in other forums here on SETI, even on EINSTEIN, but I'm not having any luck getting the help I need. Either they (several people) don't understand my problem, I'm not explaining it correctly, or I'm too dense to understand what they suggest I do. So I'll try again here.

I am having trouble getting SETI to connect to my PC, ID my PC and give me work units again. I have Einstein@Home and Milkyway@Home running on my PC, and they seem to be doing fine with about 980k worth of credit between the two of them. But SETI@Home did work (to the tune of 432k work credit) before I upgraded my PC from Win7 to Win10, and around the time (before or after) I had upgraded, it has been giving me trouble ever since. I have even changed my email address and password, negating the original 432k credits I had before I screwed it up in February. I have not been able to get work units since.

That's the short version. Let me explain my plight a little more.

When I go into BOINC Manager, under projects I select SETI@Home then I select update, I eventually get a "Communication deferred for..." message of about 1 1/2 minutes, ~4 minutes, and then for 24 hours in the project column. I have been getting this same message in BOINC Manager since February.

If you go into my account you will find two different computer IDs which are from my PC, the Win7, and a friends, the Linux computer. I had asked him to login under my account with his PC to see if it would let him in and be able to get credits to my SETI@Home account, and he did get credit for me. I had started using the Win7 PC when I first signed up on Oct. 23rd, 2017. Around the time I started having problems, I had upgraded my PC to Win10 and I have been having problems with SETI ever since. I had added EINSTEIN and MILKYWAY to my account before I upgraded and they work fine even now.

BTW this is an old PC, about 9 yrs old - yes, all original parts - same MB, CPU, GPU, HDD and memory. It did burn out a power supply so I changed that, but all else is the same. It is still working good enough for me, I don't play games or have multiple displays (though I could). I'm now current with Windows 10 Pro, Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.1). But I digress...

By now I've tried so many different ways to get my SETI account active again that I'm confused as to which email and password combination actually works. I even went so far as to delete my SETI account and wait more than two weeks and try again, but apparently I didn't wait long enough. I'm back to the same situation.

Is there a way you could get into my account settings and figure out what I need to do to get my SETI@Home giving me work units again?

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

George

OK for a start you may have cut of your Boinc log a bit early as the last entry for Seti@Home is:

10/07/18 04:08:10 PM | SETI@home | update requested by user
10/07/18 04:08:14 PM | SETI@home | Fetching scheduler list

I think others who might be able to help need to see if and what happens next.

At the time of the last recorded contact there were server issues, so that may have some bearing on your problems.
However, when looking at your list of computers there are two listed, one running Windows 10 and the other Linux, neither of which has contacted the servers for several months. This suggests that the computer that you tried to contact with on Sunday (7 Oct), is trying to use a different account to the account used to ask your question. How did you try to change your email address on the SETI servers? (Describe the process, don't post any of the addresses or passwords used.)

I disagree.
From his messages:
10/07/18 03:59:05 PM | SETI@home | URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID not assigned yet; resource share 100

It doesn't have an ID, which doesn't automatically mean it must be on a different account. I can be on a different account, but even there it won't show up as it doesn't have an ID.
If his BOINC is on a 24 hour back-off, it takes another 5 hours before it will try to make contact again.

No id assigned....
Missed that one Jord

Will a forced update force the computer to get an id (it might save waiting for the 24 hours to elapse)

Hello Ageless (Jord),

I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I'm here now.

After reading what you and Rob Smith had to say, I have a question or two.

Rob had said: "Will a forced update force the computer to get an id (it might save waiting for the 24 hours to elapse)". To which you replied: "If it can then contact Seti, sure."

1) How do I "force" an update? I've done several updates using BOINC Manager with no luck, but I haven't "forced" an update.
2) I have run out of options but I do not know how to contact SETI, or who to ask for if I did. Do you know how?

And to Rob,

You said: "...when looking at your list of computers there are two listed, one running Windows 10 and the other Linux..." I have never been able to see on my SETI account(s) a Win10 & Linux computer. I have seen Win10 & Linux listed on my computers for Einstein & Milkway.

And for "How did you try to change your email address on the SETI servers?", I had gone into Grid Republic and changed my email and password there. Again to no avail.

Thank you all (Bernie too) for responding to my plea for help.

George

Grid Republic will not reliably change the password on SETI (this is not clear on the GR help pages)- you have to do it on your SETI account page, then click on the "change email address" link. All projects are independent of each other, whilst using the BOINC framework to run under.

(My question about forced update was actually for Jord, who confirmed what I thought)

I'm sorry. The link gives you a message that states:

"Unable to handle request
missing or bad parameter: email_addr
"

To answer your question differently, yes I did and it told me:

"Change email address of account
New email address is same as existing address. Nothing is changed.

Right, that looks like a bug - over to Jord who knows where the backdoor to the BOINC maintainers lurks.....

Thanks Jord for going "above and beyond" - now let us hope David can sort it for George quickly

To Rob & Jord,

I thank both of you for your insight and effort to help me resolve my issue with SETI. I am patiently waiting for 'David' to chime in with some advice. I will get back to you when I hear from David, probably on Monday... or later.

George

The linux was from my system at another location to prove that his id and things on the server were OK. It was.
I think it is his ISP or computer hardware. But he created a new id, same problem. He reinstalled windows 10 and window 7.
same problem. He eliminated multiple anti-virus and anti-malware programs. No change.
I suggested taking the computer to another location or a friend bring another computer over to narrow it down

I suggested another network card or USB dongle as a test.
I had him ping the server and google they timed out.
tracert as well.
He contacted his ISP.
If I remember he is on wireless. I suggested to try another location in his house/apartment

He is not using a proxy, we changed his DNS to various.
1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, opendns etc
he ran anti-virus and anti-malware but as I said windows 7 & 10 were reloaded.

There was a prior thread on this but I think it was deleted when he deleted that account.
