Sounds like you need to get that new TR2 VRM optional cooling kit from ASUS for the ZE. I think it is supposed to be available next month. In the meantime, maybe you can jury rig an extra fan in the case to blow over the RAM and VRM heatsink. The side's off and a 12" desktop fan is blowing in it at the moment, am thinking of putting the 1950 back in it and waiting for a short while, EK have brought out a couple of all in one blocks for MSI and Gigabyte boards, maybe there are more in the pipeline or maybe motherboard manufacturers after seeing this type of problem may revise or bring out a new board for this problem. I just saw a story today that basically says the NVidia drivers they were using produced a "false" gamer performance report (too low) when they tested the Thread Ripper 2, 32 core cpu. The retest with the latest NVidia driver showed that the TR2 ran just as fast in full core mode as in the "gamer mode". So anyone running Thread Rippers and NVidia's should probably upgrade to the very latest driver? What I don't know is if the Linux driver is the same version they were reporting on. Something like a 399.xx driver but that might be windows only :( If the gamer result impacts the Seti processing result, there could be a bump in processing available from the new driver. The MSI MEG Creation X399 board has been tested with the 2990WX at all core full load with no issues. Even holds up overclocked all cores at 4Ghz, This is the only properly redesigned TR2 board so far in the marketplace. Every one else has just band-aided the 1st Gen boards. The Linux drivers are always several major revisions behind the Windows drivers. I wouldn't expect the 399 series on Linux till next year. I see no work on the Nvidia ppa team on anything past 396 so far. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Just viewed Buildzoid's video on his thoughts about the current crop of X399 motherboards total incapability to handle the 24/32 core TR2 chips. Buildzoid's thoughts on the Threadripper 2 32 core // YOUR MOTHERBOARD IS NOT PREPARED Basically, any motherboard that does not have 16 Vcore 60A VRM's will be incapable of running the 32 core TR2 at 1.35V which is what is usually needed for 4.0Ghz or more. He makes a very interesting point that Intel boards don't need extreme VRM counts because their CPU's use Fully Integrated Voltage Regulators (FIVR) on the die. If AMD would do the same with TR2(TR2+??) they wouldn't need such extreme power delivery hardware. Only the MSI MEG Creation with 16 60A VRM's is able to handle the 32 core. That was borne out with the AnandTech review of the 2990WX and the MEG board overclocked. Nobody else is offering any similar design. I see that the Aorus X399 Extreme board made a concession to return to actual, proper finned copper VRM heatsinks, But all for nought with just a 10 phase VRM design which is still inadequate.
