Hi. I just upgraded from a AMD RX480 to a nVidia 1080 8GB card and would like som tips on how to set this up. I use the latest version og Boinc an Lunatic`s installer 0.45 beta 6. This is the comupter i use daily for mail, websufing, netflix etc, so a minimal amout of lag is prefered. System specs: nVidia 1080 GB Intel i7-6700 16GB DDR4 3000Mhz RAM. Windos 10 64. Thanks in advance. Regards Kent. |

A few random thoughts. First, be prepared for a big jump in your RAC - the GTX1080 is quite a fast beast. Second, turn off the Windows automatic driver update (well buried in Windows 10) Third, only install the GPU drivers from the nVidia site, do a "clean" installation and don't bother the the "Geforce Experience" bit, its just worth it. It can take a bit of a fiddle to get the right bits from the installer, from memory your CPU supports "AVX" and that is generally the fastest CPU application when supported. You also need to "reserve" a CPU core per concurrent GPU task - since you are running Windows I would go for an extra core for the OS to play with - if you are running one GPU task that makes 2 cores, two GPU tasks that makes three cores. There are several threads about getting the best out of the SoG application (which is undoubtedly the best Windows app), have a look at them, and watch out for posts from "Mike" - he's spent a lot of time sorting out a good set of initial command lines for many GPU/SoG combinations. Thank you Rob. When you say core, do you mean a "real core" as in not a logical core (hyperthreading)? Whould having Geforce Experience hurt anything? I also use this machine for my gaming needs:) Regards Kent. |

Thank you Rob. Hi Kent, I quit installing GeForce Experience long ago because of it's flaky-ness. It would tell me that there is an updated driver and I would click download or install or whatever it was to activate the update. It would sit for a great amount of time downloading and doing absolutely nothing. I resorted to doing the custom manual clean install and left out GeForce Experience installation. I think I read somewhere here that it is useless to have and not to install it. Not having it installed has no impact on my gaming needs. :) I game every day. :) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Core ? Unless you are going to use a third party "core controller" app then if you are running hyper threading you have no control over which is used. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Geforce Expirience? As Siran says flaky and not really worth the time Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Thanks for your answers. OK, so it is recomended not to have Geforce Expirience installed, i will remove it. And it is recommended to set aside 1 core pr GPU task + leaving 1 core free for the OS. Are there any other settings i should use when setting up? I have seen other posts on this forum talking about using command line to get the most out of a given system. I have so far only been using the lunatics installer and manually assigned te number of tasks the gpu should run. Regards Kent. |

There can be more aggressive tuning of the SoG app based on the capability level of the card it is used on. Either you can put the tuning parameters in an app_config file in a command line statement. Or put the tuning parameter into the mb command line text file supplied by the Lunatics installer that is installed but is 0 bytes as delivered. The docs for the SoG app show the suggested command line parameters for the various card level families. If you search the forum for your specific card you will likely find many examples of tuning lines that are working well for others with your same card. He could use the 1080Ti tuning. It was originally designed for the 1080. If only 1 GPU in system then doesn't need to reserve 1 CPU core for OS. But also don't want to max out the CPU with work units. |

Hello again. I`ve tried different settings (command lline) and i am currently running 2 work units on the gpu with one cpu core pr unit (runtime seems to be around 7min) . The problem i am facing now is that everything lags every couple of seconds (normal surfing, video, etc). I have also tried running 3 WU`s on the gpu and only 1, still lags every couple of seconds. Am i doing somthing wrong. As it is now, i can either use the pc for crunching or for general use, but not both. Regards Kent. |

Hello again. I found, (on several different GPU Model Numbers - ALL EVGA), that I MUST Suspend crunching when watching Plex Video, (a Streaming Service), or I will drop frames on the video being played. Audio seems unaffected, however. I've used an EVGA GTX-760 2GB GDDR5 VRAM card, two GTX-750TI SC cards, (also with 2GB GDDR5 each card), and now with EVGA GTX-1050 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 VRAM, (two cards in New Prometheus), and ALL exhibit Video Frame Drops on Plex IF I crunch at the same time. Many YouTube Videos seem unaffected, but occasionally I find one that drops frames AND audio while crunching. I can browse, and use other programs while crunching and have NO issues with the system lagging. However; New Prometheus has 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance RAM and a Western Digital Black 1TB SATA Hard Drive. Even on old Hackintosh-Andromeda with just 16GB DDR2 A-Tech RAM, I had NO system issues crunching and using the computer at the same time. When Plex was still able to run on Win XP Pro x64 SP-2 on Exeter, even with 8GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance RAM, I had issues watching Plex with Frame Drops IF I crunched at the same time; BUT, just running the system and browsing or running other programs while crunching - the system was unaffected. New Prometheus is on Win7 Pro x64 SP-1, the old Hackintosh-Andromeda was on MacOS X El Capitan 10.11.6. New Andromeda is making use of the MacPro Hardware, (Mid 2010 5,1) system, and has 64GB DDR3 ECC RAM and two Samsung 860 EVO SSDs. One SSD for High Sierra and one SSD for Sierra. New Andromeda crunches on the High Sierra Drive. Each SSD is 1TB. Currently, one GTX-750TI SC is in New Andromeda, and the two EVGA GTX-1050s are in New Prometheus. Exeter has been officially retired as of two weeks ago - she was crunching Einstein on the EVGA GTX-760. TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Hello again. Post your command line settings. If you have system lag, you are too aggressive for dual purpose crunching and general PC use. You will either have to back off the period_iterations parameter or put in the use_sleep parameter. All available options and their meaning listed in ReadMe_MultiBeam_OpenCL.txt file in project directory. If you want to read the nitty gritty details of how the tuning works, just read the post by the SoG app developer. He should probably add -use_sleep to decrease CPU usage if this is his daily driver |

Yes, the quickest and easiest to do without extensive tuning and testing on the other parameters. If he backed off to single gpu task too it would reduce the load on the cpu and might reduce the system lag.
