Hehe:) It take's time to adopt. Here for instance carpenters used "Tum" to measure nails (That's an inch and literally means thumb, the length of your thumb from the knuckle to to the end tip) until at least in to the 70's And Sweden was among the first countries that adopted the French SI system after their Revolution more than 200 years ago. And was using Uns and Pund for measuring weights until about 100 years ago Here is how our Kilogram looks like. https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/vast/har-ar-klumpen-som-avgor-exakt-hur-mycket-ett-kilogram-ar |

This brings to mind the argument that I have with my Physics students and tutorees, The scale should weigh you in Newtons. In the US we have slugs as mass and we get the force exerted on the scale as our weight by multiplying the mass times the acceleration due to gravity (32 ft per sec per sec) to get our weight in Pounds. Therefore in the communist Metric System we have a kilogram as a mass and must multiply by gravity (9.8 meters per sec per sec) to get our weight in newtons. So someone could make a fortune by outfitting the world with proper scales that give the weight in Newtons !! Ne Pas ??There is so much wrong with this statement, force is not weight and I wonder what the French would say about being called "communist", but as I said, there is just so much wrong with this post. ;-) Cheers. |

For just Wiggo here, as being the good man, there should not be any such a thing as a rotten tomato, when rather just an egg instead, when perhaps also the color of black as well, when possibly not any white either, for just only the opposite, because making it different nomenclatures, for also different ways of meaning, if not any specification either, it could be still one single context, when also the same specific meaning. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomenclature Perhaps the weight of the Earth should be measured in tons, except not any grams, for even more specific details, but the English mile is having its own story as well, as being made up of a couple of inches. But next tell me how many inches there are for perhaps Mt. Everest, and you could rather be making it meters instead, for only a more correct explanation, except for not the similar specification, for only the same details. |

Measuring weight in Tons? Which one of a metric Ton, US/Canada Ton or Imperial Ton? In the United Kingdom the ton is defined as 2,240 avoirdupois pounds (1,016 kg).[2] This is equivalent to 20 hundredweight, a hundredweight being eight stone, and a stone weighing 14 pounds. From 1965 the UK embarked upon a programme of metrication and gradually introduced metric units, including the tonne (metric ton), defined as 1000 kg (2,204 lb). The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 explicitly excluded from use for trade many units and terms, including the ton and the term "metric ton" for "tonne".[3] |

Even the weatherman could be making it wrong at times, if I happened to be a little edgy, because I am not baking my own bread either. |

While watching programming on Mars I hear a statement about the variable tilt of Mar's axis claiming that "some models" show that Mars has tilted close to 90 degrees. Then they go on to make more claims based on that assumption. I truly wonder how much is really known about Mar's deep past and how much is assumptions based on other assumptions? Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Thousands of stars, including our sun, destined to turn into crystals https://earthsky.org/space/white-dwarfs-including-our-sun-become-crystals by Eleanor Imster and Deborah Byrd | January 12, 2019 Astronomers at the University of Warwick said this week they now have the first direct evidence that white dwarf stars – stars in an advanced stage of their evolution – ultimately solidify into crystals. The astronomers who conducted this study say our skies must be filled with these crystal white dwarfs. They also point out that – long after it has swollen up as a red giant and swallowed the Earth – our sun is destined to become a crystal white dwarf, too, billions of years from now. BIG ACTIVITY ON THE SUN: Sunspot numbers remain very low as Solar Minimum continues. Nevertheless, there is some big activity on the sun today. Really big. NASA satellites and amateur astronomers are monitoring a giant filament of magnetism jutting out from the edge of the solar disk. The glowing structure is fully one-tenth of the sun's diameter. Visit today's edition of Spaceweather.com to watch a movie of the unstable prominence. http://spaceweather.com/ |

Electric heating is only a good idea if it is powered by inexpensive nuclear, solar or wind power--do you have such ??. I don't think so. I also observe that heat pumps tend to last maybe only 5-7 years because they virtually run all the time. Claims of 14-15 years life are out there but I have seen these replaced much much sooner in cold climates. A normal air conditioner will probably average 15 years of life or more. The heat pumps and air conditioners would be fairly efficient--maybe 400% or so--- if you could use the Thames etc as a heat sink. I doubt that this would be allowed by the tree huggers. Waste heat is only viable if you have co-generation power plants in the city--extending to the residential areas and hooked up to a city-wide system of steam tunnels. I doubt that such a condition exists-first of all there would not be enough waste heat to start with and prohibitively expensive to hook each residence up to a steam district. At the moment oodles of gas is available for cheap. You can depend on the Russians for same or establish enhanced LNG port facilities and we will sell you some of our bounty of Gas from Uncle Sam. |

Mr Mackay, from Helmsdale, Sutherland, becomes the first Scottish-born pilot to travel to space, by Virgin's preferred definition of that term.Well, wee brits believe they're special, so what they say go. :-) |

"My husband wants to be separate since I started to believe in a flat earth" :) https://www.svt.se/nyheter/vetenskap/de-tror-att-jorden-ar-platt-rorelsen-sprids-over-varlden In the SVT documentary Earth is flat , one can follow some flat earthers at a conference in Denver, USA. There, and at several other conferences, people have gathered to discuss alleged evidence that NASA is lying about the exploration of space and that the Earth is really flat. The documentary mixed Swedish/English. https://www.svtplay.se/video/21472342/jorden-ar-platt?info=visa |

It doesn't help when mad scientists proclaim the universe is flat, which most Swedes seem to believe.True:) Maybe because there are differences between our languages. "Universum är platt" is a direct translation of "universe is flat". It doesn't sound good in Swedish. "Platt som en pannkaka" means "flat as a pancace". We say that "universum är plant" instead. It means that the geometry of the universe is largely Euclidean, the geometry that feels natural to us, that is, the universe is not curved. |

Why shouldn't the universe be flat? On a similar theme, "Why are Galaxies flat?" |
