There's a teensy bit of a spelling error in the heading of this - but if we march on regardless:

Two Stanford University system’s biologists, Xianrui Cheng and James Ferrell, have discovered the speed at which cells die.

Apoptosis is an evolutionarily conserved form of programmed cell death critical for development and tissue homeostasis in animals.

[...]

This finding published in the journal Science could give scientists clues about how to persuade cancer cells to kill themselves.
(There's a link to the Science Journal's abstract included, for those who'd prefer to read that. It made my head hurt though)

That was a good video, and a good website.

Citizen Science: Innovation in Open Science, Society and Policy identifies and explains the role of citizen science within innovation in science and society, and as a vibrant and productive science-policy interface. The scope of this volume is global, geared towards identifying solutions and lessons to be applied across science, practice and policy. The chapters consider the role of citizen science in the context of the wider agenda of open science and open innovation, and discusses progress towards responsible research and innovation, two of the most critical aspects of science today.

They would be still measuring the flawed 2nd generation Kilograms--but now they would know how much off they were by finely reading the current require to move them. Hard to see where one measurement is more accurate. How do they establish the correct value of the current and how did they determine how much the grand K has gone off to begin with. I do see the advantage of not having to move the Kg's to be re=calibrated. I would favor something like 1000 cc's of pure water at a given altitude and temperature--then we could argue over the Grand cc.

I miss the "proper pint" and the Imperial Gallon and quart. Used to but my booze duty free in Toronto and the Bahamas in the imperial quart--much better than the fifth or the liter.

I wonder if England still use stone to measure body weight...

And I once made a laugh of a quite good narrator, for only making it a couple of ounces of water.

Usually the confusion between measuring units isn't a problem.
However once a Canadian airliner learnt the lesson the hard way.
Air Canada were the first to be calibrated for metric units (litres and kilograms) instead of Imperial units (gallons and pounds).
When before flying they filled it with jet fuel that the pilot thought was the amount of Kg.
No, it was filled with that amount of Pounds.
So when midair halfway to their destination they ran out of fuel!

surgeries usually weigh you in Kg

This brings to mind the argument that I have with my Physics students and tutorees, The scale should weigh you in Newtons. In the US we have slugs as mass and we get the force exerted on the scale as our weight by multiplying the mass times the acceleration due to gravity (32 ft per sec per sec) to get our weight in Pounds. Therefore in the communist Metric System we have a kilogram as a mass and must multiply by gravity (9.8 meters per sec per sec) to get our weight in newtons. So someone could make a fortune by outfitting the world with proper scales that give the weight in Newtons !! Ne Pas ??

Mais oui:)
Or perhaps not. The unit Newtons isn't a unit for weight but for force and load.
Actually having a discussion with my "boss" right now about quantities and units:)

Oops:)
Airbus is learning this lesson the hard way when manufacturing. The very, very hard way.
Lot's of subcontractors from different countries and different units.
Airbus has said that the problem was simply that the wiring in the aircraft was too darn complex (and, to be fair, each aircraft has 300 miles of wiring), but the real problem was that the different engineering teams were using incompatible versions of the CATIA design software, which led to all sorts of miniscule, but critical mismatches in connectors.
I saw a docu about it when the builders where laying out the wires and to discover that they often are just about an inch too short.
"Oh no. Not again!"

Do we (UK) still use 'stones' when talkking about our weight?
A few weeks ago I was visting a client for an all day meeting and one of their junior engi eers described herself as weighing 7stone 9pounds and 173cm tall and her father as 134kg and 6foot 3inches tall. She guessed I was 100kg and 183cm (which is very close to the figures at my recent pre-op check up)
So we do use them, but in a very random manner.
