theregister.co.uk writes that the Russian 500 meters FAST radio telescope has detected 84 pulsars in two years of operation. It says that it is helping the SETI Institute in the search for radio emissions by aliens. Tullio |

I thought FAST was in China not Russia (who have the RATAN 600, a 600m annular dish) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Of course you are right. It is in China. Tullio |

I wouldn't have too surprised as the recorder does have some rather interesting views on locations. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Astronomers Are Baffled by HD 139139, the Most Bizarre Star Yet Unusual dips of light observed by the Kepler space telescope have so far confounded attempts at an explanation By Adam Mann on July 3, 2019 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/astronomers-dont-know-what-to-make-of-this-incredibly-bizarre-star/ "When people in our community hear about something like this, the running joke is it might be aliens," Vanderburg says. The possibility crossed his mind, he adds, as the seemingly-random dips reminded him of the scene in the film Contact in which Jodie Foster's character begins hearing blips from outer space that trace out a prime number sequence. I see what appear to be trends of development in the graph of dips of the star HD139139, which is reproduced in the article linked below. Early on, the largest dips immediately before the largest one of all show a greater and greater dip in light output. These first increase slowly, them more rapidly at the end, which is marked by the deepest dip. From this point on, the largest dips show a trend of gradually lessening in depth. Both the trends of deepening and lessening depths occur over approximately the same length of time. https://gizmodo.com/freaky-star-seems-to-dim-randomly-and-astronomers-dont-1836045295 |

Breakthrough Listen's new search for alien lasers | Space 2019.07.24 https://earthsky.org/space/breakthrough-listen-seti-optical-beacons-technosignatures For the last few decades, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has focused on detecting radio signals. But a new collaboration between Breakthrough Listen and VERITAS will focus on looking for laser-like flashes of light.https://breakthroughinitiatives.org/initiative/1 https://veritas.sao.arizona.edu/ Apr 3, 1999 - May 3, 2020 |

Arecibo Observatory nets $19 million grant to search for dangerous asteroids NASA has ensured the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico can continue its search for near Earth objects (NEOs) that pose a threat to the planet with a $19 million grant. The fund was awarded to the University of Central Florida, which operates the observatory on behalf of the National Science Foundation. It appeared a few years ago that Arecibo would end up being closed... nice that it has been revitalized with this search as it will also continue to produce SETI@Home data for us. |

It appeared a few years ago that Arecibo would end up being closed... nice that it has been revitalized with this search as it will also continue to produce SETI@Home data for us. Considering our current president, I doubt there will be any sharing of data permitted. |

The very first post in this thread was about the MeerKAT radio telescope situated near Carnarvon in South Africa, and I'm pleased to report that astronomers using the array have announced their first major discovery. News article Nature abstract |

Gigantic Chinese telescope opens to astronomers worldwide - 24 September 2019 The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) in southern China has just passed a series of technical and performance assessments, and the Chinese government is expected to give the observatory the final green light to begin full operations at a review meeting scheduled for october. The world’s largest single-dish radio observatory is preparing to open to astronomers around the world, ushering in an era of sensitive observations that could help in the hunt for gravitational waves and probe the mysterious blasts of radiation known as fast radio bursts.https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02790-3 Apr 3, 1999 - May 3, 2020 |

Cosmic cats and nuclear blasts: the strange history of interstellar messages So you’ve received a message from an extraterrestrial intelligence. Congratulations! You are now at the centre of one of the most important events in human history. But now comes the hard part: what do you say in return – and, more importantly, how do you say it? Tomorrow, our messages will be even more sophisticated. The Seti Institute’s Earthling project, for instance, is amassing a database of sounds submitted by users around the world, which will be electronically remixed to create unique songs that try to capture human music as a gestalt before it is broadcast into space. |
