Gary you must remember that Sten {Tut} lives in a country whose people eat lutefisk as a normal thing. They are different. |

Now I'm going to have to convict you of a "vacation person" response, my reply was to Sirius, who lives "across the pond" in a place that can't put dates in the right order, drives on the wrong side, can't spell, oh wait, that's Chris who is having that rant on Beta. ;-) never mind. |

Well after my sojourn to the USA, where I found that large shops in big cities do in fact take "contactless" payments. Some smaller shops and businesses use the "swipe and sign" method, obviously no more secure that the old system. Also if say in a restaurant your card is removed from your sight taken to the swipe machine then returned for you to sign, you then sign the receipt, and remove your card. Making it impossible to check the signature. At no time did I ever see anyone ever check the signature! Over all it was a lot safer to use cash, which I hated having to carry money around in my wallet So now I have been back in the UK for a week and I have not used cash once. I will now see how long I can go without using cash. I will let you know. |

At no time did I ever see anyone ever check the signature! Yep. Which is why swipe and sign is pretty much an invitation to theft. Only time I've ever seen people checking is after the merchant has had a couple of charges reversed and the boss realizes he is supposed to check. Or Bernie, you could look at it this way, you don't look the "type" that needs to have their signature checked. ;-) |

I have written, "Check ID", on the back of my card instead of my name, but no one ever does! Hope you had a good time overall, Bernie, and glad you made it home safely. ![]() |

This is funny. Debit, credit and cash card and other similar cards have a date when they expiry. That's ok but here in a non english speeking country it is written on the cards in English! My debit card says "Valid thru 10-20". My card to do bank transactions says ""Good thru 12/18 (Month/Year)" Well, we do understand some English here. But there is a problem. What the heck is the meaning of "Valid thru " and "Good thru"? Even some Americans don't know:) https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080602141626AAZvg2y |

At no time did I ever see anyone ever check the signature! Credit card fraud levels (at the point of sale) here have only reduced slightly since swipe & sign was depreciated. So there were some losses due to stolen cards being used until they were cancelled, but it was only a very, very small percentage. Now it's pretty much Paywave (cantactless) for small transactions, and bottom slot (or swipe for older machines) for larger transactions. However credit card fraud is well and truly on the increase overall- due to online purchases. Almost 80% of credit card fraudulent transactions are a result on CNP (Card Not Present) transactions (ie online, as very few transactions (if any?) are done over the phone these days). That article said there are fees for processing cash transactions. I'm not clear what that means. I do know that credit card transactions incur fees to the merchants, but apparently they've decided it's worth it. ![]() |

There may also be charges for using facilities like night safes for securely depositing money outside normal banking hours. |

I do know they charge fees for cashing payroll checks if you don't have an account, but that's nothing new. ![]() |

As far as I know. There are no fees being charged to me for my banking. But then again I belong to a credit union. ![]() ![]() |
