I got a Linux kernel update to 4.16.16 from stretch-backports a couple of days ago and installed it on an i7-8700 without any issues. Went to install it on a Ryzen 7-1700 which also has a GTX1060. It won't boot any more. It hangs in the boot process with a blank screen and you can't ssh into the machine.

There is a Debian bug 901919 raised for it. It also appears to effect multiple NVidia driver versions. Going back to the previous kernel (4.16.04) seems to get it going. If you get offered a Linux kernel update and have nvidia-kernel-dkms you might not want to install it.

Thanks for the report. I looked it over and I think I am in the clear because I am running the 396.24 Nvidia driver that seems to be immune from this bug.

Debian only have 375.82 in Stretch and 390.48 in their testing repos. Did you get the later one direct from Nvidia?

No I use the Ubuntu Graphics-Drivers PPA repository for the drivers. Always get the latest from them.

Apparently fixed in 390.67-2. Now waiting for it to get pushed through Debian repos.

And they've pushed the 390.67-2 drivers all the way to stretch-backports, so its now safe to upgrade again :-)
