During the rest of the day a series of mugs of strong black Americano, with the last one at about 4pm. The coffee is interspersed with pints of water.

That's very dangerous in some parts of Italy where a "small coffee" equates to an espresso and a glass of water, delivered with a look of total disgust and pity

I know the feeling.
Many coffe shops now have a person called a "Barista" instead of a "Person who serve coffe" :)
"What will you have?" the "Barista" ask whereas the "Person who serve coffe" just serve.
The variants of coffe servings are endless!

When in Venice--go to LIDO and order a double (Un caffé doppio ). It can be served with lemon and is good after dinner in the evening. For breakfast, the Italians serve a large muddy cup of coffee with milk that is perfect with the morning meal.

There's a ground coffee made with chicory that I like. It gives it kind of a richer earthy flavor.

I do like tea, occasionally, but I think I prefer iced to hot. Chai is good, but I'm not sure if it's considered a tea.

Chai is the Persian (Farsi) word for tea. I think it refers to China. The word for orange is portugal which is where the oranges in Iran came from. The word for gum was "Adahms"i am sure was for adams chewing gum.

Their tea had a good dose of Bergamot and was akin to a good Earl Grey tea. The tea boys would serve tea three times a day. I preferred a large glass--so they called it Chai-eTorki (Turkish tea) apparently thats the way they liked their tea in Turkey. I also liked dark color in my tea --"por rangi) i.e. full of color.

I remember my great aunt making this type of coffee for large family gatherings.

Scandinavian egg coffee is a traditional brewing method originally popular in Sweden and Norway, now also common in parts of the American Midwest. The technique (which is sometimes lovingly referred to as "Church Basement Coffee," since the vast amount you can brew of the stuff at once is perfect for Sunday gatherings) calls for a whole raw egg to be mixed with the coffee grounds before adding them to boiling water.

The idea is that the egg clarifies the coffee, creating a perfect separation between the grounds and the water used to extract them.

...The resulting pot is a beautiful golden-amber color, remarkably free of cloudiness or sediment. But it both smells and tastes, well, exactly like something you'd get in a church basement after a rousing game of Bingo.

King Gustav III even ordered convicted murderers to drink coffee while doctors monitored how long the cups of joe took to kill them, which was great for convicts and boring for the doctors.

The short story:)

In 1746, Collegium Medicum issued an announcement describing the abuse and abundance of tea and coffee drinking. The following year there was a consumption tax on coffee and tea. Different classes received different taxes from 2-12 riksdaler. In 1756, the farmers in the Riksdag passed a coffee ban (as revenge on nobility and burgesses because the farmers could not make their own liquor tax-free). The coffee ban was in use until 1769 when coffee was re-introduced into the country against a customs duty. Throughout this period, coffee was smuggled into the country.

In 1794 the coffee was banned again, but the dissatisfaction among the population was so great that coffee again became available free without regulation in 1796. 1799-1802 and 1817-1822 were also periods when the coffee was forbidden. The reason for the banning of the coffee was, among other things, due to the fact that it was considered a luxury article, a foreign abundance that made money flow out of the country.

Nestle', a big Swiss company, has acquired the right to sell Starbucks coffee. Starbucks is opening a coffee house in Piazza del Duomo, Milano. I drink Illy coffee from Trieste.
