Testing, testing. Just seeing if I've still got a green star - about 36 hours after the anniversary.

What is everyone else doing - contributing to a fighting fund for next time, or accepting that the game is over?

Good question. Do we keep our stars and donor widgets after a year without donating to the project again?

Let's see, I haven't donated for over a year, so are my stickers & star showing?

Yes, so it looks as if one's donation status has been frozen.

Very good and good fun! :-)

That reminds me of:

Christ of Saint John of the Cross

However:

Not sure I'd be happy to sit under that little lot;

And I dread to think about the RFI flying out from that! (Or is that room inside some reinforced concrete bunker Faraday cage?!)

Happy cool crunchin'!

Still waiting for 3rd party reviews, but it's looking like AMD is finally back in the video card game. Nvidia are going to have to get serious again.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on the RTX 30 cards. I am yet to come across a host I can access host details using a boinc project to see how fast they are using boinc.
If anybody is aware of one I am also on the lookout for a rendering project. TIA

I recently just picked up an RTX 3070. I'm waiting for the GPUGRID app to be updated before I can use it though.

I should be able to run some benchmarks on it for you. do you have anything specific you're looking for?

I also already updated the SETI Linux Special application to CUDA 11.1, and ran through my collection of old SETI WUs. I put it up head to head with the RTX 2080ti since games performance is supposed to be similar.

FOR SETI WORKLOADS ONLY:
RTX 3070 is about 75-85% speed compared to 2080ti.
RTX 3070 used about 200W during the WU runs
RTX 2080ti used about 225W during the runs
RTX 3070 = 46 SMs w/ 128 "cores" per SM
RTX 2080ti = 68 SMs w/ 64 cores per SM

The SETI special app seems to scale really well with SM count, and the RTX 30 series cards in general have half the SMs compared to Turing. It is my theory that the SETI app is coded using a lot of integer operations, thereby reducing the effective CUDA core count for the 3070.

remember there was a huge change to the architecture with Ampere, and such a change had massive improvements for FP32 operations, but almost no change for INT performance (per SM) compared to Turing

Ampere cannot do INT+FP32+FP32, it's more [INT or FP32]+FP32. so you wont see much gain where there's a large amount of INT operations to do.

I haven't gotten around to throwing it up on Einstein yet. but a benchmark will be easier and provide more consistent data and a clearer comparison.

Has anybody else noticed the sort-order reversed in the message board index? For example, click on "News" and the selection choices are : 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 --- 13 - Next. "1" is the most recent and "13" is oldest. Within the individual threads the order is in what I always thought was "normal" i.e. "1" is oldest and "..biggest number.." is newest. I ran across this when I aimed to read latest news, went to ->Message Boards ->News -> 13 / and got postings from 2004! Did I mess up a setting somewhere that customizes the order?

Forum threads are listed by the sort order you set in each page you are viewing. Either Newest post first, most views first, most posts first or newest first.
You also can set your forum message preference globally in your Community Preferences in your Message and Display section.
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/edit_forum_preferences_form.php
Also each forum can have "sticky" messages that are pinned to the top of the thread list. These don't move and are not factored into the sort order.
This is probably what you were dealing with in News.

Thank you for is this information.
I was just genuinely interested to see how much faster they were than their RTX predecessors. In my original post I forgot to mention that I run Windows so I imagine run times would be slightly slower but still very impressive from the information you provided.
I will watch with interest to see how your card preforms at Einstein. I have just had a look and I cannot find any hosts with 370s in them. Linux and AMD cards definitely seem to perform the best there
Out of complete curiosity are you intending to use your 370 solely for GPU processing?

@Keith
Forum threads are listed by the sort order you set in each page you are viewing. Either Newest post first, most views first, most posts first or newest first.

As you have correctly listed the choices - there is no "oldest post first" for the Thread list (like there is within a thread for sorting posts). It defaults to the correct, i.e. expected, order but sometimes the mental reflex is to go to the "end" of the list without thinking of the sort order. I guess the obvious solution is to choose "newest first" in my account preferences (for message threads) then it will be the same in both contexts.
And although "Newest post first" and "Newest first" look equivalent I interpret the second one to mean "sorted according to the thread START date" whereas the first one means "sorted by message POST date." I can experiment a bit with those choices and figure it out.

As far as Einstein performance:

the 2080ti does the current batch GW tasks in about 4 minutes, using 225W (360 t/day)
the 3070 does the current batch GW tasks in about 5 minutes, using 170W (288 t/day)
the 2080ti does the FGRP tasks in about 6 minutes, using 225W (240 t/day)
the 3070 does the FGRP tasks in about 7:20 minutes, using 150W (196.4 t/day)

so for Einstein GW tasks, the 3070 is about 5% more efficient
and for the Einstein GR tasks, the 3070 is about 19% more efficient

only planning to use the 3070 for distributed computing.

Anyone have a record player and an IBM PC sitting around waiting to get used?
Master boot vinyl record: It just gives DOS on my IBM PC a warmer, more authentic tone
And on the B-side: Linux?

And I thought that I was bored while booting up an old 2002 Celeron rig with WinXP on it over the weekend, but I can't see me getting that bored. :-O

Cheers.

The RTX 3060Ti reviews are out.

This is a good summary of the results from Phoronix
Across all the compute tests run, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti was on par with the RTX 2080 Ti / TITAN
