Hi Siran, long time no type too. Since Canonical went to a Snap based distribution of Chromium in Ubuntu 20.04 and Mint 20.04 said no-way, hell no . . . . to ANY Snap apps, Mint 20 does not have access to Chromium.

However you can still install the latest Chrome browser with a direct download of the deb package from Google.

... The 'AV' for Linux/*nix that there is checks instead for what are called "root kits". For example, see pretty much the only one checker(!): chkrootkit

General details are described on: Wikipedia: Rootkit...

Just checking the chkrootkit utility:

It is a mere 44kBytes of source code/comments/data/read-me!! That's all that is needed!

(Edit: OK, so that expands to 881kBytes when installed.)

Personally, I'm a little leery of the tie-in to Google with some of the Chrome features. Just one example is the default use of the Google DNS unless you know to change that...

Meanwhile, Firefox is a good feature rich alternative...

RE: DNS

I forcefully change my Search Engine AWAY from Google TO DuckDuckGo. (In Firefox....) THEN I put in OpenDNS on
ALL computers in the house! (Windows, Mac, doesn't matter, they all get DuckDuckGo AND OpenDNS.)

When I had a separate Router behind the U-Verse Gateway, I also programmed the Router to use OpenDNS. Though I had
some issues a little over a year ago and had to pull the personal Router out of the equation to get full Internet Access back.
I think some U-Verse Update at the Gateway played havoc with the Router. Can't prove that, though.

Anyway, with OpenDNS on EVERY computer in the house, Google gets little to no info on us here.

Hi Keith,

I would much rather stay away from ANYTHING Google. I don't like their politics, or their spying, or their data stealing, etc., etc. I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine. I haven't used Google search in over a year. I won't use it, no matter what. I don't use any computer outside my house. Yeah, I know, my cell phone is Google, but I hate Apple even more. ;)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Martin,

Long time.

See my post to Keith about Chrome and Google.

I have re-purposed one of my Pis and installed PiHole on it. It serves as my DNS server among other things. All computers, laptops, tablets and cells deal with the Pi before going out to the Internet. It has a MAJOR blacklist of advertisers that it blocks. As for the AV software, not using any. I've always been pretty careful about using the Internet. And If I see emails that I don't recognise, I delete them without opening them.

Have a great day! :)

Greetings,

Ok, I have no idea what the heck is going on with Firefox (Mozilla version)! It started acting up on me... AGAIN! I kept having tabs crash and then the whole browser crashing repeatedly. Soooooooo...

I looked for another browser. I tried one called Epiphany and that was crap. Instead of having bookmarks in separate folders, they were ALL in one drop down (no folders). No fragin organization AT ALL. So uninstalled that one and looked for another one. I found a Firefox Flathub) and decided to try it. It is virtually identical to the Mozilla Firefox. It is from Flatpak. We'll see if this one works properly. ;)

Have a great day! :)

For alternative Linux browsers, try Brave and Vivaldi.

Hi Keith,

Well, this version of Firefox started having tabs crash. But, the whole browser never did.

I looked up how to install Vivaldi. Just gotta download it and use GDebi to install. I am now using it. :)

Thanks and have a great day! :)

Report: The RTX 2070 Super, 2080 Super, and 2080 Ti have been discontinued.
Rumor mill: If there’s ever a sign that a new product line is about to launch, it’s the discontinuation of its predecessors. That appears to be the situation with Nvidia. Next-gen Ampere GPUs are on the horizon, and as such, the company has reportedly discontinued its entire high-end RTX line.
You might remember reports in July that claimed Nvidia had ended production of several RTX cards. According to MyDrivers.com, the company’s AIB partners have since started the process of delisting their high-end products and are offering promotions on existing stock.
If the noises are true, then the next series of NVidia GPUs are not far away at all.

Interesting but unless the other projects develop apps to take advantage of the GPUs, is it worth buying new cards?

The existing gpu projects still can use the new cards with the old apps. That is, if they are compatible with the new SM class they will have. Very few projects have CUDA apps. The OpenCL apps theoretically should not care.

But none of the current gpu apps are using the full capabilities of the cards like our old special sauce app did.

In Linux, you have ClamAV as a anti-virus application. In most distro software catalogs as far as I know.

It's shame that we won't be able to see how they perform under linux special sauce app.

It would have been amazing

If someone had saved any workunits, you could test.

Wait a minute I do have work units to test in my BenchMT tasks folder.

Could run the new Ampere cards in BenchMT with the special sauce app. Even could compare it to the same workunits crunched by one of my RTX 2080 cards for comparison.

But first I would have to purchase one of the new cards. Wonder where this generation prices out compared to Turing. Higher - Lower - the same . . .? ? ?

I disagree. I believe the GPUGRID app uses the full extent of the GPU. i get even more power draw from their app than I did with the SETI app. with GPU use pegged to 98-100%. but they way their apps are designed, GPU memory use is quite low at less than 1GB, yet PCIe bus use is sky high compared to other projects (which can make it a bottleneck if you dont account for that when building your system)

it just depends what metric you want to use to define "using the full capabilities" I guess.

SETI - pulls up to max power limit, high heat produced, 99+% GPU core load, medium VRAM use (~2GB), marginal PCIe load (PCIe 3.0 x1 is fine)
GPUGRID - pulls up to max power limit, very high heat produced, 99+% core load, minimal VRAM use (<1GB), significant PCIe load (PCIe 3.0 x8 or better)
Einstein GR - pulls about 75% TDP, medium heat produced, 99+% core load, minimal VRAM use (<1GB), insignificant PCIe load (even down to a PCIe 1.0 x1)
Einstein GW - these are more CPU bound, the best performance will come from a strong CPU driving the system to help the GPU perform the tasks faster
but you're looking at about the same 75% TDP, medium heat produces, GPU load depending on CPU performance, high VRAM requirements at times
>3GB, insignificant PCIe load (even down to a PCIe 1.0 x1)

personally I think the GPUGRID app is on par with the SETI Special CUDA app based on GPU load and power draw, they're just different types of calculations with different requirements. a fully unpacked and decompressed GPUGRID WU probably has no chance to fit into a normal GPU's available memory, so they dont even try, leading to the huge PCIe bus load sending data back and forth constantly.

We'll have to see if there are any issues with next gen hardware on GPUGRID when they are released. I think I remember you saying that GPUGRID had this issue last time with Turing, but I also think they have changed their apps since then and it might no longer be an issue. we'll just have to see.

If previous new families is any guide they will start a bit higher, just after the remaining stock of the old families has had a price cut to clear the shelves.

It depends which end of the line they start from - and it looks as if they're starting at the top.

Note that the RTX 2070 Super, 2080 Super, and 2080 Ti were all overkill (price/performance wise) for distributed computing: they contained lots of extra silicon for new functions that we didn't need here.
