looks like you JUST missed it. according to the CPU supported list on ASUS's website for that board, the 8086k is supported as of BIOS version 0616. Hi Ian, Well, it won't let me download 0616. I clicked the "GO" button and it keeps having me download 1601. I guess there's a reason for it. So, I will flash my BIOS with 1601. :) Thanks Ian and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Four high end gpus, even 1070's are going to pull north of 850W. My four card hosts always are north of 1000W. Put two such hosts on the same circuit and you have already exceeded the rating for a standard 15A house breaker. The wiring in the wall from the breaker panel to the outlet is usually the most limiting factor. Standard house wiring, especially from the age of your home was 14 gauge at best maybe even 16 gauge in a mobile home. Also the construction period calls into question if aluminum wiring was used which is its own major headache. My thoughts exactly, My 15A circuits don't have any PCs on them, just a 20A circuit with one PC with 12 gauge copper wire, the rest of My 1987 Fleetwood mobile home has copper as well, but then I have 4 20A circuits, 2 were installed by Fleetwood, 2 by an electrician I'd hired, I do have a newer 1050w Seasonic Platinum psu(180mm) that is going in My PC to replace a huge 1500w Silverstone ST1500S(220mm), I have 4 more 20A breakers and outlets to be installed asap, but I can't say more at this second and I'd like to, but I'll be back later. Ok I'm back, the max number of 1070Ti's and/or 1080Ti's I'd have in a case would be 3 each and no I would not mix the two types in a case, although one can do that, I just don't want to, though if I had to it would be just for testing a new card. My PC uses an EVGA X79 Dark and it allows for 3 video cards max in the diagram(1650 v2 cpu and 360EX cpu cooler w/32GB 1866MHz ram), as does the P55 Sli, the two Asus Rampage 3 Extremes can do 3 or 4, I configured one for 3, the other needs a new socket(about $65 I read), My Asus Rampage IV Extreme allows 4 cards max, though it too can via lane switches use 3 as well, the Rampage IV Black can do the same as the other Asus motherboards, only the R3E would have 3 Zotac 1080Ti Extreme Core Edition cards or 3 Asus 1080Ti Strix OC cards as these take up 2.5 slots each, though My preference is for the Zotac over the Asus, unless I found a really good deal on 3 Asus 1080 Ti Strix OC cards and for the 1080Ti's I have an Enermax 1500w Gold psu each for the two Cooler Master HAF XB EVO cases, the 1070Ti's would be in 3 towers with a Seasonic 1050w in each, I got a really good deal on two Enermax 1500w gold psus and on a Seasonic Snow Silent 1050w Platinum psu, sure they're used and clean and I tested the 2 that have come in and they do work, the 2nd 1500w Gold will be here on Monday, the 2 other 1050w psus are just proposed and can be changed for a 1200w or 1300w Seasonic Platinum Prime if needed. My host has 4 x 1070 Hybrids, just see the kill-o-watt and it's drawing now 675W from the wall (110VAC) crunching SETI. I use a platinum PSU of course. |

AMD is coming back with the Vega 2, or VII as it's called. 16 GB of HBM2 memory 4906-bit wide bus 1 TB/sec bandwidth 60 compute units 3840 stream processors 240 texture units 64 ROPs (raster operator processors) Clock 1.45GHz/1.8Ghz 13.8 TFlops FP32 300 Watt Coming February 7th at US$699.- (Review) Will be a nice addition to the new gaming system I am planning to build later this year. Seagate in the meantime is coming with new harddrives using HAMR technology (heat-assisted magnetic recording) which can gives us 48TB drives by 2023 and 100TB drives by 2025. What the .. are we to do with 100TB drives? HAMR overcomes the tendency of smaller magnetised areas in current PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) technology to flip their magnetic polarity, and hence their binary bit value, through temperature changes and interference from neighbouring bits. A different and more stable recording medium is used, which needs heating before bit values can be written, meaning the read-write head requires a laser-heating element. HAMR bits can be made smaller than PMR bits, so a disk drive platter's areal density increases and drive capacity rises beyond the 16TB limit or so of 3.5-inch format disk drives. (Review |

What the .. are we to do with 100TB drives? I can remember when we got our first computer with a HDD- 20MB. After dealing with 180k & 360k floppies, it was more space than I could ever imagine using. HDDs are like sheds & store rooms- the amount of crap always grows to exceed the amount of available space. Grant Darwin NT |

HDDs are like sheds & store rooms- the amount of crap always grows to exceed the amount of available space.Well, I can attest that a 4TB drive isn't much these days. My NAS has 4 of them and one of them I have exchanged for an 8TB drive as it was near capacity full (215GB left over). But even with 16/20TB of space on there now, I don't see how to fill it with 100TB of data in 5 years time. Not to mention, how the heck do you back that up? And how many years is backing up 100TB going to take? 4TB takes a full day already, to another drive in a docking station at USB 3.0 speeds. |

Sure you will not going to make a backup of a 100TB drive thru a USB 3.0 device, This kind of big drives are target to corporate customers and servers farms nos us normal mortals, if you could call us "normal". I just pull out my "Data" backup caddy, replace with new drive in another caddy & format then backup. :-) |

Greetings, I keep occasionally getting WUs with errors like this one. Any ideas on it? Is it my PC? Is it in the data this PC is crunching? Is it Micro$oft's fault? lol ;) I do see something about Micro$oft in it. lol ;) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. That is just the normal output of the stock cpu app. Hard to tell what caused the failure. Could be hardware or software. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Hi Keith, Thanks! :) Yeah, I kinda figured it would be difficult to figure out what the cause is. I can eliminate the CPU in a few days with my upgrade. If I still get them, probably not the CPU. The WUs are CPU WUs. But then, the i7 8086K is nothing more than a binned i7 8700K; I found this out through more research (Googling). Perhaps it is the CPU even though I don't currently have a 8700K just the 8700. I keep tabs on the WUs. I just don't know where to start to figure out this error problem. Thanks again and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Could be the cpu is getting tired if you have been pushing it overclocked for some time. Or the memory is pushed to far. Set the cpu and memory to stock clocks and run a couple more cpu tasks and see if it the compute error is still happening. Sometimes memory errors don't show well in Windows. In Linux a memory error usually will print out a segfault error and is pretty obvious. Could try running MemTest86 on the memory to see if the blame lies there. Could try just reseating your RAM sticks for a quick and dirty fix. If you really wanted to dig into the issue you could download the offline benchmark tools from Lunatics and run the task that failed in the benchmark tool against the tools cpu reference app and look at the printout for what the Q factor is and what the compare results show about concurrence between the test app and the reference app for detected pulses, spikes, triplets and Gaussians. The CPU and RAM are at stock settings. I will re-seat the RAM when I do the CPU upgrade. In the mean time I can run MemTest86 after I'm done today. I believe I downloaded a newer version than what I currently have. Will have to update the USB stick. I'm not running BOINC from my system drive, an M.2 NVMe drive, I have it installed on a 1TB SSD and is running from there. My Samsung Magician software says both my system drive and the 1TB drive are in good health. Any reason to think that not running from the system drive is a problem? Thanks for the pointers and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. It shouldn't matter what drive you run BOINC from. BOINC does such a little amount of hard drive transfers, it isn't even noticeable to the OS. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Two threads: Don't know where it should go? Stick it here! Don't know where it should go? Stick it here! Part VII Confusing, one is here, the other is in Cafe, one needs a name change, when Part II comes up here, both will start to be really confusing, just saying. I find this one useful though, especially as you won't get me into the Cafe, not even if it was the last forum on Earth, or I was paid a million credit per viewing. |
