Keith sorry to rain on your well meaning parade, but the results of your well meaning parade will given the patent laws in this country will line the pockets of big pharma, bankrupt many and help very few due to cost.

Yup, a worthy addition to the "stick it here" thread.

For my amusement I have been bidding on Gtx 1060 3GB cards on eBay. I set my top bid for $100. Someone ALWAYS tops my bid :)

So people are getting these cards for $115/$120 and the buy it now price has hit as low as $125.

My fastest Rig has 2 Gtx 1060 3GB's in it, running the "special sauce" product. I am waiting to see where its RAC actually tops out at. Then maybe putting a 3rd card it will give me a little boost.

Mumble.

a dual 1060 machine on the latest special app is worth about 80k RAC these days. not counting any credit you get from the CPU.

during wow i had a dual 1060 machine that did not crunch any CPU work. it did about 80k each day.

i still have another dual 1060 machine that does about 100-110k RAC when you include the CPU work from the 2x E5-2690 CPUs

Then I have a ways to go. I am hoping to crack 100,000 for the RAC but you are running faster cpus than I am so it sounds like a "possible only."

I actually broke down and bought another gtx 1060 3GB, it should be in by Friday. I am temped to park in on my single cpu e5-2670 until my dual cpu machine "peaks". Can't hurt and it would give the other machine a "thrill" for a while :) Who knows, maybe I can get a horse race going between my machines :)

Guess what I just found. A barebones chassis, MB, cpu, ram, PSU including 4 e7-4690 v2's. Yup, 60 cores.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-ProLiant-DL580-G8-10B-Server-60-Core-2-80GHz-E7-4890-v2-64GB-No-HDD-3x-PSU/382558487086

The vendor is selling them with varying amounts of ram. This listing has 64GB.

Now all I have to do is come up with a capitol acquisitions budget and an operations budget (electricity).

doesnt make sense for you to buy a whole server with 4x E7's. not sure how much room is there to add any GPUs, no interior shots.

it would make a good VM box. if you want to do that. but not much use for SETI. you'll get more performance from a couple GPUs at lower cost. also that thing will have 120 threads lol. more than seti will even send you jobs (100 max), unless you turned off HT.

and to top it off, the 4x PSUs require 200-240V. at least according to the listing.

Ah, I missed the PSU issue. Just got back a PM from the seller. Says it has 3 Double-wide slots video slots, all the rest of the 9 total are single wide slots. So it should be possible to hang as many gpus as you want to pay the risers and riser expansion cards on it for.

Not sure about the bio's though.

Your right, I am just dreaming, but the price is just barely do able for me. In fact, if I want to go with slower cpu's I can get another used one for $600 (2.4GHz, I think).

I can see the Seti scheduler now, uploaded 100 tasks, asked for more tasks, starts running and screaming "I'm all out, I'm all out...." ;)

I have had several PM's through eBay with the vendor.
They are willing to switch it to 110 volts. But they did mention it would be 3 X 1,000 watt PSU's. And noted that a 15 Amp house circuit wouldn't handle that.
They confirmed space for upto 3 double-wide gpu's. Leaving a 6 single wide slots (not sure how many would be useable).
A friend asked about warranties so they quoted me 90day/6mo/1year prices.

I have even floated a loan for the machine. I don't see how I can power it up though :(

The loan probably wouldn't pay enough to an electrician to run a 50 Amp circuit.
Sigh,

I seemed to have stalled at 65,000 for the last couple of days. Hoping to "move on up" [Jefferson's Reference] in the next couple of days.

Got the newest used gtx 1060 3GB, put it in my other machine for the time being. Discovered the PSU wasn't up to it, so upgraded it to an 850 watt PSU.

That leaves me with the question of how big a PSU are you running on the machine you referenced? It sounds like you need something bigger than 850 watts for 3 X Gtx 1060 3GB's?

How long does it take for RAC to peak at its highest for a new host?

The common wisdom that is quoted here is 6 weeks to two months. This one re-started about August 31, 2018.

So it has been at it almost three weeks. Someone else running a similar combination of gpu's, OS and app says my gpu's "oughta" make up to the neighborhood of 80,000 like his did when he was running gpu only. No telling how far the MB cores will push it though.

But I have been watching my graph and it seems to be getting a little flatter.

Eventually, I may try to run a 3rd gpu on the system but I wanted to see how high I could get on 2 gtx 1060 3GB's and a couple of non-racehorse e5-2670's.
