Georges Méliès is the subject of today's Google Doodle (Variety, Google archive). They have used some new technology this time, for 360 degree virtual reality (if you have the right toys of course). This is quite appropriate to celebrate an early pioneer of film special effects. He created some of the earliest science fiction films.

Méliès appears to have been a pretty all-round genius. I saw this self portrait in Köln and in addition to the original composition it is technically flawless, with excellent proportion, colour and detail:

Oh - I've seen that Trip to the Moon film. This man's name just didn't ring a bell with me.
