Just another typical day in Law Enforcement
Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a New Jersey police sergeant accused of participating in a conspiracy to steal thousands of dollars from suspects of drug cases, authorities said.

According to the criminal complaint, officers would routinely steal money from drivers and passengers of vehicles and then pass along a portion of the proceeds to Cheff who would sign off on false police reports that omitted the illegal seizures of cash.

I don't know why I haven't seen more lawsuits over this practice, but better late than never:

Family Sues DEA and TSA After Elderly Man's Life Savings Were Seized at Airport

A class-action lawsuit is now challenging the DEA's habit of seizing large amounts of cash from travelers without evidence of any crime.

Terrence Rolin kept his life savings in a Tupperware container, but all that money now belongs to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), even though the 79-year-old retired railroad engineer hasn't been charged with a crime.

When Rolin's daughter, Rebecca Brown, tried to take her fathers' savings—$82,373 in cash—on an airplane, a DEA agent seized it simply because large amounts of cash are considered suspicious by the agency.

Brown and Rolin are now the lead plaintiffs in a federal class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Institute for Justice, a libertarian-leaning public interest law firm, challenging the DEA and TSA's practice of seizing large amounts of cash from airline passengers without any evidence of any underlying crime.

"Flying with any amount of cash is completely legal, but once again we see government agents treating American citizens like criminals," Institute for Justice senior attorney Dan Alban said in a press release. "You don't forfeit your constitutional rights when you try to board an airplane. It is time for TSA and federal law enforcement to stop seizing cash from travelers simply because the government considers certain amounts of cash 'suspicious.'"

Er? "but all that money now belongs to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)" Nah... stealing something doesn't make it yours. :^p

DEA vs $82,373 -- and you don't even get told to show up in court with a lawyer.

Maryland policeman charged with murder in shooting of handcuffed man
(Reuters) - A Maryland police officer was charged with murder on Tuesday after he fired seven shots at a man who was sitting in a patrol car with his arms handcuffed behind his back.

Police Chief Hank Stawinski announced the charges less than 24 hours after the shooting took place on Monday night in the Washington suburb of Temple Hills.

“I have concluded that what happened last night is a crime,” Stawinski told a news conference. “There are no circumstances under which this outcome is acceptable.”

Prince George’s County Police Corporal Michael Owen was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and other related charges for the death of William Green, 43, the chief said.

The incident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. after Owen and his partner responded to reports regarding an erratic driver who struck several vehicles while driving and was suspected to be under the influence of an unknown substance.

The officers stopped Green and put him in the front seat of a patrol car. They were waiting for an officer to evaluate Green for drugs when Owen shot him.

Los Angeles Perjury Department
LOS ANGELES — The California Department of Justice is reviewing the Los Angeles Police Department's records and policies regarding use of the state's gang member database after allegations emerged that officers in an elite crime suppression team falsified records and listed innocent people as gang members, Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Monday.

His solicitor Paul Conrathe added: "It is a strong warning to local police forces not to interfere with people's free speech rights on matters of significant controversy."
Mr Justice Julian Knowles added: "To do so would be to undervalue a cardinal democratic freedom.
"In this country we have never had a Cheka, a Gestapo or a Stasi. We have never lived in an Orwellian society."

Video shows Chicago officer shooting subway rider in back
CHICAGO (AP) — Extended security and body-cam video released Tuesday shows Chicago police shooting an unarmed short-order cook at the foot of a subway escalator and then again with his back turned to officers after they tried to stop him for violating a city ordinance by walking from one train car to another.

The Chicago Transit Authority and police body-cam videos for the first time provide a detailed look at how the incident unfolded from the time Ariel Roman used a subway’s gangway doors to when he was shot for the second time after scrambling away from officers up the escalator. Roman, 33, survived but was severely injured.

In the most striking video segment from a CTA camera, Roman is seen running up to the top of the escalator in the busy red line station holding a coat in his right hand. With the pursuing officers about 10 feet behind him, and with his back still turned to them, a female officer shoots him and he immediately slams face first onto the floor. The officer reholsters her gun and appears to handcuff him.
