After most of the day and many games it looks like win10 is finally getting installed. I ended up installing win7 first, which was a bear to do seeing that the machine is win10 compatible only , getting as many updates as possible, then getting win10 to install. Right now it's loading the 1st 3Gb of udates (72%) so far.

Well, now that the nightmare is over I'm back up, more or less, and crunching again as of mid afternoon yesterday. I guess I'll have to wait until Milkyway has finished before I can start crunching Seti again, but that will give the splitters enough time to get rid of the total thirst of everyone else trying to get WUs.

Hey Cliff, quick question, I've heard that newer machines with the latest procs aren't technically 'compatible' with Win 7, though there are ways (as you found) to get it working properly on that platform. My question is, why did you go the next step to 10, as it appears that you had 7 running properly? Do you like it better than 7, or do you have a bunch of software that is only 10 compatible? I ask because I'm curious, and it appears from the outside looking in that you had 7 successfully installed, but still moved on to 10 anyways. Enquiring minds want to know! ;-)

As far as getting Win 7 installed, I just kept attempting to do the install and I guess the machine said to he@@ll with it and allowed the install to occur. I never was able to finish all of the updates to Win 7, it stopped after the SP1 update and the OS was the only thing on the system at that point. It wouldn't even search for them. I couldn't go to the update directory because only IE 8 was installed and I kept getting popups whenever I opened it saying it was outdated, and it never functioned well. The popup about the OS being outdated kept appearing every couple of minutes, even when the system was idle, so I don't think I had a fully stable system. So I really had no choice but to go to Win 10 Pro (x64). It's all quite baffling as it seems that the Win 10 install needed some Win 7 drivers to do an install. I still couldn't use the Win 10 install stick, but the system builder install disk worked after several attempts. The system is still not completely stable as there are a slew of major errors showing in the event viewer some of them dealing with the kernel. I've never paid any attention to the event viewer before, but I believe that it was filled with so many major errors that it just refused to take it anymore and went bellied up .

As far as liking favoring 7 over 10 -- HELL YES!!!, I think I had better control over the system and it was much more responsive especially for someone who knows just enough about the PC to be dangerous. I can install different applications and get them to seemly to function correctly, but I know nothing abut the inner workings of the OS and how it functions. With M$S attempting to put everything, and I mean everything, in the OS to work cross- platform leaves much to be desired. This thing is so bloated with apps and games I have no desire to have or the need to have, to me makes it unmanagable. I can't get rid or disable anything that is linked to the OS so all of those apps are just taking up space that could be used for other things. Right now the system resides on a 128Gb SSD with approx. 62% free, which I believe is below the accepted 80% free space, so I guess I'll have to get a larger SSD for the system drive, which also means I'll have to get a larger HDD for my daily backups.

Hi Cliff,

Don't quote me on this, but I believe there is a registry setting change in order to get Win7 updates on the current generation CPUs that by default follow Micro$oft's DEMAND that they do not update Win 7 even though they are supporting it until January 2020. Just another scheme developed my Micro$oft to force everyone to Windows 10.

In response to my reply to Cliff:

I used the Google machine and found that it is a piece of software someone developed that goes around the update block demanded by Micro$oft.

I was reading many of the responses to the article I had read. Someone stated that it is Intel and AMD that told Micro$oft they are no longer going to update drivers for Win 7 and 8. I have no proof that this is true or false. Hence, that is supposedly the reason Micro$oft blocked updates for Win 7 and 8 on the new tech. But, it makes no sense that Micro$oft will no longer support their own product when the expiration for support is just under 2 years in the future. This still smells of a scheme from Micro$oft to force Windows 10 on people unwilling to move on to it.
