Mr Delnevo said the way the plants had evolved was unique. "The interesting thing is that it's not the ants that are adapted to the climate of the south-west, it is the plant that has evolved to use ants as effective pollinators," he said. "Here in Australia they evolved in isolation for millions of years, with native pollinators, and they create floral shapes that actually facilitate the pollination of those specific agents. Now scientists are studying what the bug’s crush-resistant shell could teach them about designing stronger planes and buildings. “This beetle is super tough,” said Purdue University civil engineer Pablo Zavattieri, who was among a group of researchers that ran over the insect with a car as part of a new study.
