Message 1960707 - Posted: 18 Oct 2018, 0:19:54 UTC - in response to Message 1960458.

Last week, on my way home from work, I got off an Exit, and was on the ramp to another road. To my left was a triangle of trees, surrounded by roads. Right next to the ramp I was on, was a little baby black bear. I didn't see the mother, and there was no way he could get back to the woods without crossing a road. He was the cutest little thing. I didn't want him to get hurt, so when I got home, I called the state police, and they said the bear had already been reported. I hope the little fellow is OK.

Steve

God bless you for reporting it. I hope someone did something. I'd probably have stopped and helped it cross the road.

I thought about that, but although I didn't see the mother, I wasn't keen on trying to help her cub, and meeting her head on.
I only had one pair of underwear that day........

Catching up on this thread and noticed no one brought up:

I had some of these in my storage shed and garage. It's the best solution I found. Rodent has to work to get to the bait and death is instant. They make a non-wifi version but you have to check that or you could end up with.... shall we say, a rodent that is past it's prime.

Brazilnut Bjorn is a girl, and she had two darling little raccoon kits this year. They were born later than Rusty's two kits. The size difference is incredible.

So excited to be a great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother again!

Grace is eating canned cat food again.

I'm looking into if I can put My home on a lot nearby and to see what besides a rusty garden shed is on the land, county maps say the lot is 150 feet by 2100 feet or 7.4 acres all for $56,500. Zoning is Rural Living, 1 structure per 2.5 acres, there is what looks like an office or a guest building(240sqft, 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom) and maybe a garage in addition to the shed, plus water, electricity, landline, and cable are all there, though natural gas might not be there, but is nearby since the park is just across the fwy from the property in question and the property might have a septic system, My place is wide enough @ 14 feet, but I would have to provide pics of the properties on either side and pay a $173 county determination fee to determine if My place is compatible since My home is more than 10yrs old, My home is at present 31 years old. The 15 freeway is to the north and south of Yermo Rd is the Marine Base aka: The Yermo Annex. The neighboring Water Tower has since fallen down and in the other direction is an empty lot and then an apparently boarded up old Restaurant.

Pic of a Wildlife crossing concept over the 101 Freeway. More info here. $60 Million by 2020 and all privately raised. They need $10 Million by June and are 1/3rd there, this is for Cougars and wildlife in general.

Yes, it's mainly for Wildlife, no human vehicles.

A newly designed concept for the Highway 101 wildlife overpass was unveiled Tuesday as officials celebrated mountain lion P-22 Day and Urban Wildlife Week. Mark Mester reports from Agoura Hills for the KTLA 5 Morning News at 11 on Oct. 23, 2018.

Cougar wiki. Bing says Raccoons are liked too, I misspelled cougars and got an entry that I would have missed had I not done so.

An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in most American habitat types. It is the biggest cat in North America,[4] and the second-heaviest cat in the New World after the jaguar. Secretive and largely solitary by nature, the cougar is properly considered both nocturnal and crepuscular, although daytime sightings do occur.[5][6][7][8] The cougar is more closely related to smaller felines, including the domestic cat (subfamily Felinae), than to any species of subfamily Pantherinae,[1][9][10] of which only the jaguar is native to the Americas.

The cougar is an ambush predator that pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources are ungulates, particularly deer. It also hunts species as small as insects and rodents. This cat prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but can also live in open areas. The cougar is territorial and survives at low population densities. Individual territory sizes depend on terrain, vegetation, and abundance of prey. While large, it is not always the apex predator in its range, yielding to the jaguar, gray wolf, American black bear, and grizzly bear. It is reclusive and mostly avoids people. Fatal attacks on humans are rare, but have recently been increasing in North America as more people enter cougar territories.

A wildlife crossing bridge like that has been talked about for I-65, between Louisville and Mammoth Cave.

And it's something that should have been built decades ago, wildlife has a right to exist, while humans do not have a right to send wildlife to extinction, by neglect or otherwise.
