No 15 reminded me of going on a walk with a birdwatching friend somewhere in Dorset I think it was, and a tank turning up. We were too close to MoD land to point binoculars apparently.

He'd not been allowed to point them before that also, because we'd accidentally wandered onto a nudists beach.

That is sad :(

If it is canine distemper, it's had and is having the same effect on all the wild dog species in Africa :( that, alongside the diseases that have been introduced with non-indigenous livestock.

I know I shouldn't do this, but I'm trying to show my new raccoon that I can be trusted. So far I've been able to stick my arm out the door while holding an egg without it running away. (No idea if it recognized the egg.) It's been coming around for a while now. As far as I can tell, there is only one (for now). Of course, the dogs start barking like crazy as soon as they realize that it's nearby, so it will never be totally trusting.

Some nights I'm driven crazy by the dogs when they hear the raccoon come in through the doggie door EVERY 15 MINUTES. (They scare him away for a short while then he comes back.) Nights like that I'll get up and put a bowl of dog food outside so the little guy doesn't come in and alert the dogs and I can get some sleep.

I've thought about that and I disagree. I've heard bad things about raccoons and chickens but I've had no problems. I collect the eggs every day and bring them into the house, so there's no reason the raccoon would look for them in the coop. And my chickens don't stay in the coop with the eggs. Laying chickens don't do that. Oh, occasionally a hen will become "broody" and sit on infertile eggs, but it won't last long. Especially if the eggs are removed daily. I've started letting the girls do what they want at night, which means I don't lock them in the coop, which means they're not easy prey. (I live in an area surrounded by houses so there are rarely, if ever, coyotes or other wild animals searching nearby for food, and we have no neighborhood dogs that roam nor do we have wild dog packs. In other words, very small risk.) The girls have even stayed overnight in the house once or twice. Basically I've given this raccoon no reason to associate the chickens with the eggs.

My raccoon comes into the house at night and eats whatever cat food is left by the cats. Sometimes I make sure there's no cat food left out (in the house) for the raccoon, but not always. And sometimes I put a bowl of dog food outside so the raccoon doesn't have to come inside scavenging for food. (Sometimes he does anyway.) Last night I put an egg near the hole under the house where he hides. Why search for eggs when they're being delivered? :-)

I would LOVE to remove the doggy door. The dogs really don't need it. But the cats come and go a lot through the doggy door, so it's staying for now.

Now, if I'm wrong and tragedy eventually strikes, you'll be able to say you warned me. Stand by.
