BOINC Computer ID: 7066606, Farragut has recently died.

The replacement system is currently being built. I need to keep the old ID of 7066606 AND, if possible, keep the existing work queue...

Old system was an HP Envy Desktop system on an i5 CPU with integrated HD-530 GPU. All work was being done by the GPU. New system is an i7 7700 with integrated HD-630 GPU. What do I need to do to keep the queue from being deleted when I transfer/copy the data from the old drive to the new drive? Both the old and new systems are Win 10 Pro x64. The old system was on Lunatics v0.44...

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. The new system will be in my hands tonight. I would like to get BOINC 7.6.22 operational on the new system within the next day or two. Thanks in advance.

TL, read this thread. How to get back the old host ID?

Just read that Thread. So, if I copy the entire BOINC Projects' Folder to the correct location on the new system, then find and increment "rpc_seq_no" from 4298 to 4299 then reinstall BOINC 7.6.22 and Lunatics v0.44 and start crunching will the old tasks pick up where they left off??? Or, will the tasks be aborted by the new setup??? I'm NOT just trying to save and reuse the System ID#; but, am trying to save the work from being killed in transferring from one system to another. OS will be identical; going from Win 10 Pro on the HP Envy with i5 and HD-530, to Win 10 Pro on a generic Gigabyte MOBO with i7 7700 CPU and HD-630...

Yes, the new system will just pick off from where you left it on the old failed computer. Based on the comments in that thread, the hardware and OS aren't going to force a new Host ID. You aren't changing any applications or moving from a 32 bit system to a 64 bit system so the software is the same and the current tasks in your cache will run on the same applications.

Thanks, Keith. :-)

My parents' new i7 System is being picked up later today. I will be fine tuning the new Windows install, copying my dad's data, reinstalling dad's programs to the new system, THEN working on getting BOINC set up on it. All should be well with BOINC tomorrow or Wednesday.

This new system will be the most powerful system my parents have ever owned. :-) (Much better than any off the shelf HP system...)

@TL, I don't think you should have any issues. If some crop up, either a post in that linked thread or a PM to Juan BFP, the expert around here regarding keeping old stats and host ID's on new hardware probably would be smart. Post am update when the new system is up and crunching.

I am going to have to perform a different task when I convert two of my oldest Win7 systems over to Linux in April.

That's the whole BOINC data folder, not just the projects bit.

...then find and increment "rpc_seq_no" from 4298 to 4299..
In client_state.xml - the SETI section if you have more that one project.

...then reinstall BOINC 7.6.22
Yes

...and Lunatics v0.44
Not needed - you have it in the BOINC folder.

...and start crunching will the old tasks pick up where they left off???
Yes

Thank you very much, Richard. :-)

I didn't get a chance to get this done today on the new computer. Instead, I ran into what seems to be an "old" Windows bug going back to some time around the release of Win 7... I spent most of the day going through the system to find out WHY Windows Update, (for Drivers), REFUSED to install an old printer driver. My 20 Year Old HP 4000TN printer, (still working great), REQUIRES that Win 10 be able to obtain the driver FROM Windows Update in order to function.

I get to "Add a printer" ---> "The printer is NOT in the List"-Link ---> add manually, specify TCP/IP, 192.x.y.z ---> Popup occurs showing "Short List" of Printers and Drivers, NOT there yet... ---> Click "Windows Update" to obtain FULL Printers' and Drivers' List... <--- Here is where Windows Update IS SUPPOSED to allow me to find "HP 4000 Series PCL"x"", (usually "5" but can be "6"), BUT instead I get a Popup saying that Windows Update CANNOT be reached, try again later!!! I even spent THREE HOURS on the phone with Mickey Sloth Tech Support. They OBVIOUSLY could NOT get this to work... I proceeded to Clean Install Win 10 Pro x64, AND STILL CANNOT reach Windows Update to obtain the printer driver.

A Mac friend, (whom also fiddles around lightly with Windows), helped me research this issue... Come to find, (as I mentioned above), that this "Bug" goes back to Win 7, and CAN affect ANY install of Windows, BUT NOT ALL installs. I've NEVER heard of this issue, NOR experienced this before today. ALL of our prior Windows systems, (three still running), were able to obtain the needed driver for the 4000TN Printer. (A Win 7 Pro x64 system, a Win XP Pro SP-2 x64 system, and my dad's ASUS Laptop on Win 10 Pro x64 ALL successfully obtained the Printer Driver.) EVEN the now dead HP Envy y750 Desktop system on Win 10 Pro x64 successfully obtained the 4000TN Printer Driver.

I don't know what the answer is to this issue... OH, and the MAIN Windows Update, (for Win 10 Updates and MS Office Updates), works just fine! After Clean Installing, MAIN Win Update obtained ALL the necessary Updates and System Drivers for the Integrated Intel HD-630 GPU, the new ASUS 2.4/5/AC WiFi PCI-e Card, and some other misc. Intel Support stuff. So, ONLY the Printer Driver side of Windows Update is UNREACHABLE by THIS computer... :-(

Anyway, it's almost midnight here, now... I have a 10 AM Dentist's appointment... Have to be up by 7 to get ready... I will be working on dad's new system, again, tomorrow.

Sounds to me that the server that these specific drivers look for isn't there, while the server for normal Windows Update is there.
So instead use the Microsoft Update Catalog site: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=HP%204000%20Series%20PCL

Both MS and I tried DLing and Installing from the Catalog and that failed too, with the computer stating that the Driver wasn't "compatible"... So, this MUST be done through Windows Update, ONLY...

[Update: :-( ]

The HP Envy's WD Hard Drive is FRAKKED, BORKED, DEAD!!!

Disk Manager on New Farragut shows that the HP Envy Drive is claiming to be ONLY 16GB of EMPTY space! All data, programs, documents and pictures are gone. :-( I can't be sure, but I think that the HP Envy Drive was 1TB, originally... It was a WD Blue...

I don't suppose there's a manual way to enter the original BOINC Computer ID's into a new installation of BOINC on the new system, is there??? I'm assuming that I'd first have to install BOINC 7.6.22 fresh, first...

Any help here would GREATLY be appreciated.

Have you moved the drive from the HP into the new computer?
(HP frequently "did strange things" to prevent drives from being moved like that)

16GB sounds like a "recovery" partition, what does the disc label say?

Have a look with "Disk Management" you can usually see the partitions better there

[@Rob:]

I had to move the HP Drive from the HP system into an External USB Case; the drive was UN-bootable in the HP system. Upon connecting the USB cord to the 4-Port Hub on the desk, connected to the new computer, the computer chimed stating that it recognized a USB Connected Device... However; in "This Computer ---> only C and D, (Local Drive and DVD Burner Drive), were displayed... The HP Drive should have come up as E.

[@Bernie:]

Disk Management states clearly that there's ONLY 16GB of storage capacity... It IS/WAS a 1TB WD Blue...

Yup, that sounds the sort of thing I would expect sticking a main HP drive into a usb drive. Is it possible to put the drive onto a SATA or e-SATA connection? Sometimes doing this fools the HP generated MBR and other stuff into behaving as you would expect. The advantage of going directly onto a SATA type connection is that the computer BIOS (of which ever breed) manages the link not the BIOS in the usb device which is a very feeble afair not really designed to cope with the way HP do disc management.

So it shows as just one partition?

Also what is the disk label?

Which of the disks below does it resemble most?

at last resort, you can try TESTDISK utility to recover lost Partitions

Be aware, it's a powerfull utility https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Disk Management ONLY shows ONE 16GB Partition. No EFI/Boot Partition, and NO Windows Partition! The TOTAL Drive space SHOULD be 1TB and ONLY 16GB is showing; NOT even "Unallocated" space... :-(

[@Rob:]

I can try to put the defective drive into the new case. As it is just now 6AM, I won't be able to get to this for a few hours... The parents are sleeping.

I will keep this option open. I most likely will have to make use of this.

[Update: :-) ]

[@Rob:]

THANK YOU!!!!! :-) Putting the HP Drive directly into the New Farragut PC Case WORKED!!! Drive E is ACCESSIBLE!!! :-) I'm copying my dad's data over now... At some point, today, I will get to copying the BOINC Data Folder and making the necessary changes to keep the Computer ID#'s for SETI and SETI-Beta.

OMG!!! That was scary!!! Dad was willing to pay some Data Recovery Center up to $1K to get this data back!!! Thanks to Rob, it just costs dad and I time... :-) :-D
