As a citizen of a country whose government has been rambling on for decades about Israel's security being Germany's primary state goal, but which otherwise criticizes Israel's occupation of West Bank any day and would not help in the event of a major conflict, I can understand Israel's government. Surrounded by Syria, Hamas in Lebanon, Iran on a very small land area, your own safety must be a priority. Russia is in Syria, just around the corner. And Israel needs Russia's consent to defend against Hamas activity in Syria.

Then I have this thought: many Israelis are immigrants from the former USSR. In Germany, too, after 1990 we had many late resettlers from the USSR. German-descendent settlers invited by russian Emperor Catherine the Great (also a german princess) from southern Russia, whom Stalin deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan for being German). The older of the returnees were German-speaking, culturally German. The middle generation was very Soviet (German language was banned under Stalin and later on) and they initially only spoke Russian when returned to Germany. This generation still today watches only Russian television in Germany. Among them are many Putin supporters who have already organized demonstrations and motorcades in Berlin for Putin. The youngest generation, who already went to school in Germany, are Germans who can't understand their parents' views on Russia, on Putin---family conflicts. Politicians take such social realities into account.

Maybe there is something like that in Israel? On the other hand, Jews were also marginalized in Russia, kept away from power. Hard to imagine that russian Jews who emigrated to Israel are pro-Putin. I don't know.
