Russian authorities have issued the first guilty verdict under a new law criminalizing “blatant disrespect” toward the authorities for online posts calling President Vladimir Putin an expletive.
A Novgorod region court 570 kilometers northwest of Moscow found a local resident guilty and fined him 30,000 rubles ($470) Monday for posts calling Putin “a fantastic f––” two days after the legislation went into effect. Critics say the law that fines first-time offenses and jails repeat offenders for up to 15 days for insulting state symbols and the authorities stifles free speech.
“On March 31, Kartyzhev shared two public posts on social media with text reading ‘Putin is a fantastic expletive, Putin is a fantastic expletive,’” a judge is heard saying in a YouTube video shared by a user named Yury Kartyzhev. The court database lists Yu.D. Kartyzhev as the defendant in the case.

The beluga whale wearing a harness with mounts for a GoPro camera that first was spotted by local fishermen on Norway’s Barents Sea coast in late April is still swimming around in the harbor of Hammerfest.
Today the beluga is stripped free from the harness, but is refusing to leave his new life of freedom in Norway. Experts say the whale will likely not survive without being fed by humans.
Maybe ‘Whaledimir’ was not at all on an alleged spy mission, but simply escaped from the pens from where he was trained?

One cautious nurse explains that their clothes should be burned, but the doctors are depicted handling the toxic items with bare hands.
“It’s exactly like the show’s creator said,” one of the doctors said, referring to a tweet from Craig Mazin three days after the Severodvinsk explosion. “Thirty-three years later and our government hasn’t learned a thing. They keep trying to hide the truth.”
