Someone over in the Help Desk asking for advice (I think, so far he hasn't asked anything yet ;-)) on how to fill an Asrock H110 Pro BTC+ motherboard (1 PCIe 3.0 x16, 12 PCIe 2.0 x1)... Has probably won the lottery. :-) |

The extremes these "miners" will go to..... This Is What Happens When Bitcoin Miners Take Over Your Town Eastern Washington had cheap power and tons of space. Then the suitcases of cash started arriving. EAST WENATCHEE, Washington—Hands on the wheel, eyes squinting against the winter sun, Lauren Miehe eases his Land Rover down the main drag and tells me how he used to spot promising sites to build a bitcoin mine, back in 2013, when he was a freshly arrived techie from Seattle and had just discovered this sleepy rural community. |

Thanks Z-man. Just grabbed it for the new ASUS-Linux build that went online an hour ago. Only have the 1060 in it now. I can't get the old 970s to work for some reason. I really didn't want to use them anyway and they are power hungry compared to the Pascal cards now. Just a head's up for anyone else looking for water cooled. I got notification that the GTX 1080 FTW Gaming Hydro Copper card was available too. I already reached my limit on the Hydro one. Still available for anyone with an existing custom loop. Some almost local news (and yes, it's in Dutch, but the images is what's most interesting): a 'bitcoin factory' was found, they were illegally tapping the electricity. Stupid of course. The mining itself isn't illegal here (not yet, one day soon though...) So this person had multiple of these racks divided over two floors. Each with 13 GPUs and one motherboard (probably the mining Asrock that guy in the Help Desk is using), 3 rows per rack. Don't know how many racks. But a stupid person because although electricity isn't as cheap here as in Norway or Iceland, you should be able to easily pay for it if you sell part of your cryptocurrency. Especially when you run multiple racks with 39 GPUs per. Wonder what's going to happen with those GPUs. edit: missing quote (') |

They will sell off the cards to help cover the cost of the electricity but don't expect anything until after the sentencing part of the trial. Until then, they are evidence. |

Interesting that the police are focusing on theft of electricity and money laundering. The first is quite easy to prove as the guy had bypassed the meters, but the second is not quite so easy, but probably carries the heavier sentence. Yes, I'll keep an eye on the movable assets site. There's a sale every month, so I'll keep an eye on things, see if the GPUs ever surface through there. :) |

BTW EVGA has their 1070 Ti hybrid listed for $660 USD 1070 Ti hybrid listed for $660 USD EDIT: That's up $30 from the last time I looked about 45 days ago. PS: Remember when the 1080 Ti came out, they said the 1080s would be under $500? Pffftt That lasted a week ... |

All the cards got a bump in MSRP. I guess supply and demand and what the market will bear in great effect. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Is it possible some of that might be due to the ridiculous rise in the cost of RAM? I can't believe that I have to pay 10 bucks a gig for it, between $80-90 for a pair of fairly pedestrian 4 gig DDR4 sticks. Painful, but what can you do, if you need it you need it. |

That is why I was scrounging around on fleabay to buy the RAM necessary for the X99 build. Did manage to get the memory for about $100 less than what it would have cost me retail. I wonder whatever became of that Chinese RAM manufacturer collusion investigation. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Well, I think it just might be finally happening. I have gone to EVGA's site maybe 3-5 times over the last number of days, and have seen as available a number of higher end cards, like the 1070Ti AIO and even some 1080Ti's, so it just might appear that the luster has started to wear off of the mining craze a bit. It's been a few months now since I've seen these cards stay available for more than minutes or maybe hours, but unless my timing is unbelievable, they seem to be sticking around. Now as to the pricing... Well, as has been mentioned before, that certainly has taken a noticeable spike upwards, which also might be scaring off some customers, I know it did me, even though I'd love to get one more 1070, I just can't justify the cost at this time. As long as it's the beginning of the end, I expect that these increases will be temporary, especially once memory prices finally start to fall again - everything's a cycle, some are just a bit longer than others. |

I still think the primary reason for the lack of availability was the lack of RAM to build the cards in the first place. The miners only exacerbated the problem with the supply and demand equation. I think the RAM supply issue might be relieving and that is why the cards are becoming available again. So you think that they are trying to maximize profits by taking their - probably still limited - supply of RAM and building out the higher end cards first? I suppose that would make sense. |

Yeah, if you had any business common sense, that is what you should do. If the RAM supply ever stabilizes again with non-issue availability, then build your high-volume commodity cards. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
