I've been struggling along for so long with a laptop and a tired old desktop comp that I've used as a server. Every time I would try to do anything on my server the cpu would peak and stay there for the duration! I finally broke down and bought another one and wanted to try it out but just as soon as I fired up Boinc I saw zero downloads. Came here and found the servers are down! Man I wanted to see what this thing could do here!

1 of the download servers (Vader) is on the blink again and here is how to get around it.

Firstly read this page, How to modify your hosts file.

Then add these lines to your host file following the instructions in the link,
208.68.240.118	setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu	# upload server Oct 2016
208.68.240.119	boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu # Georgem download server Oct 2016
208.68.240.126	setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu	# scheduler Oct 2016
#208.68.240.127 vader.ssl.berkeley.edu # Vader download server Oct 2016

The hashtag in front in front of Vader's I.P. address means that it will be ignored, but that can be edited out later when Vader comes back to life, if you want to.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I had that info years ago but lost it. I can wait though, I've still got to get connected with the beta site. If theirs are up I'll crunch for them. I just want to see what a dual proc twelve core comp can do!

I've still got to get connected with the beta site.

There's no work at Beta at the moment.
They were testing some updates, and the splitters died. Since then they've been dealing with server issues here on the main project.
Resumption of Beta service- no ETA.

thanks again for the info. Now I've got 24 wu's crunching away! That ought to give this beast a run for it's money! The highest I'd ever seen the cpu run was one core at a time would peak for a second, the rest of them idling. and a total of 12% for a split second.

Thanks to all for the welcome back! It's good to hear from old friends and to know that they still remember me from what seems like ages ago!
To sum up my situation, I've been 'on the road' until recently, providing audio/video/teleprompter and general 'tech support' for a nationally touring band, and just haven't had the time to devote to some of my former hobbies, like SETI. I left the band this past summer and I'm now in the process of starting a local service providing much the same services I did with the band, but geared more toward affordable musical support for cookouts, birthday partys and such. I was stuck with an 'antique' computer to run my website from, but that quickly became irritating. Waiting over a minute for a page to update from the server was the last straw!
I broke down and invested in a 'real' server. It's an older model but still performs beautifully. (HP Proliant DL380 if you want to look it up.) I noticed the speed of this thing seemed incredible (being used to at most a 2.2ghz quad core) that I decided to get back on here to see just how it performed at crunching.
This thing was supposed to top out at a max clock speed of 2.67ghz, but I've seen it actually running at over 3.1ghz! I don't know what they did to this thing, but it's a screamer compared to what I've been used to! It's equipped with dual Intel Xenon processors with six cores each, and multithreading. The processing times for each wu seem to be a lot faster than I remember, but the real kicker is it is running 24 of them at the same time!
I had never seen my RAC over 100 previously, and just now saw that it's already over 1000! I'm going to leave it running wide open like it is for another few days just to see what kind of RAC it is capable of, but I'm concerned about the long term running, as I'm running core temps of between 150 to 180 degrees. I personally don't like those numbers, as I like to run processors cooler which makes them last longer. (I've seen that replacement parts for this machine are quite expensive!) So after I see my RAC level off I'm going to back it down a little because like I mentioned, this is now my main web server and that has to take priority, but I'll take my chances for a while just for kicks!
Thanks again for the warm 'welcome back' which makes me feel like I'm '@home' again!

I'm running core temps of between 150 to 180 degrees.

Way too hot. 158°F maximum for long term running.
I'd suggest running it with the lid off, and better yet- some after market coolers.

Hmm, don't know what happened. I replied but it didn't post. Well, here it goes again!
Thanks for the suggestions, but the only option I have available is to back down on my crunching to get my temps down. This is a heavy duty rack mounted server with built in warning and shutdown systems in case it sees any specs outside of it's limits. It has six fans that span the entire area between the eight 15000rpm SAS hard drives in front and the cpu/memory section. Four of these fans are the primary fans, and they are running just above idle, and the other two are redundant backups in case of a failure with any of the main fans. I might be able to go into the cmos and tell it to increase the fan speeds to cool the cpus to a lower temp, but I'm reluctant to do this as it's sitting right beside me! Some increase in fan speed might be acceptable, but when they are running full blast they are noisy! The way it's designed, removing the cover would only cause it to run hotter because of disrupting the air flow. Also, the extreme 180 and above temps were only seen for an hour or two after starting crunching. The top temp I'm seeing now is 172 on the hottest core and down to 153 on the coolest, and averaging about 155-156 degrees.
As I mentioned before, this thing has a front panel with warning indicators for every kind of fault that could happen and I've never even seen a flicker from any of the overtemp warnings. This thing was refurbished when I purchased it, with a new updated bios, cmos, and firmware for all systems, so what I saw was probably it just getting used to running full out for the first time and it took a while to settle down. Now that it has the system appears to have settled down into a more or less stable state.
I don't like even the 155-160 degree average that it's doing so I'm going to back it down some now that I see that my RAC is beginning to level off. I've seen what it can do, so now get it back to what I got it for, which is a web server. I'll still crunch for SETI, but just not using it's full capabilities, to be able to make it last longer.
Thanks again for the info and suggestions, even though what you suggest is just not possible in my situation.

Cut my processing in half to get the temps down and it's now running with core temps of 110 to 120 with an occasional peak of 130. I also reserved a few cores so I'm only running 19 wus at a time now instead of 24. I'm going to be away this weekend but I'll have my laptop with me so that I can remote into it and keep an eye on it. (I've got to go help a friend with a busted water pipe and while I'm there I've got to get up to date pics for ID cards, finalize their design, work on a design for business cards, etc. I had already printed up a few sample cards, and it made one of them happy because I had used her choice of graphics but it pissed the other two off! hehe. I'm hoping to soothe their anger by coming up with a design they all agree on!)
I had never had any problems running full blast except for the temps and only a very slight delay while starting programs as BOINC backed off to allow the other programs to take over. I've got my settings to suspend all work if my cpu gets to 25% but this never happened no matter what I was doing. (This is set up as a full blown audio/video production system capable of playing and recording eighteen channels of audio simultaneously along with the video recording. While I've not recorded that many tracks on it yet, I've watched movies in full HD with 7.1 channel full surround sound while SETI was crunching 24 wus full blast!)
