Here is the major announcement indicated below:

Trump accepts invitation to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

North Korea’s belligerent leader, Kim Jong Un, has asked President Trump for talks and Trump has agreed to meet him “by May,” South Korea’s national security adviser said at the White House Thursday after delivering the invitation to the American president.

Kim has also committed to stopping nuclear and missile testing, even during joint military drills in South Korea next month, Chung Eui-yong told reporters in Washington.

After a year in which North Korea fired inter-continental ballistic missiles capable of reaching all of the United States and tested what is widely thought to have been a hydrogen bomb, such a moratorium would be welcomed by the U.S. and the world.

Kim Jong Un “expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible,” Chung said. “President Trump said he would meet Kim Jong Un by May.” Chung did not provide any information on where the meeting would be. In Seoul, the presidential Blue House clarified that the meeting would occur by the end of May.

Hah... I think our new joke name for Kim should be "Yawn Sigh Oh".

I reaffirm what I said earlier: I think that if Donald Trump can pull this off and get North and South Korea peacefully talking and end the brinkmanship on both sides, this would be re-election material and I would concur that he had earned it. Whatever chaos may or may not be going on behind closed doors in Washington, so far he seems to be doing some good things.

I hope Trump knows how to say 안녕하세요 when meeting Kim Ping Pong.
It's really difficult to pronounce.
Especially for Americans:)

Forget North Korea. If Trump pulls this off, the Rest of the World's leaders will have much "kissing" to do after their actions during his 1st year in office. A big question though is this: Was this due to pressure from China?

We will see how Rump FUBAR's things. DPRK and ROK have been willing to talk peace for a long time. China, Russia and USA want it on their terms however. If Rump actually allows Koreans to decide their future and backs away from the requirement that after peace the USA can station troupes on the Chinese and Russian borders, then there might be a deal. China however won't allow a deal if it means the USA doesn't exit Korea. Russia will attempt to divide and cause distention to derail anything so they can sell more arms and cause the USA to have to deficit spend more money from future generations assuring Russian domination in another generation or two.

IIRC DPRK had a precondition of protection. I suspect Kim is looking for Hirohito protection. He wants to live and not be hung for war crimes. How much power he wants to hang onto, I don't have a clue.

The other possibility is just a peace treaty that mirrors the armistice agreement.

Possibly a fear by Kim and China that Trump's words have real meaning. A fear they did not have with Obama, Bush, Jr. nor Bill Clinton.
Absolutely 100% correct. China pressured Lo Fat Dung to 'make a deal' because they in turn are being pressured and called out on their cheating of the embargo.

I think the final straw was the realization that Trump wasn't bluffing regarding using the USCG to board and seize ships of any registry violating the embargo. It would be extremely embarrassing for a Chinese originated cargo ship to be seized and its' crew paraded in front of the World Press.

The difference between Trump and predecessors trying to settle DPRK and US differences is he is not a 'diplomat' He calls a spade a spade no matter who is offended.

It's called being brutally honest.

I sincerely hope for the best possible outcome, but I suspect it's just another stall to gain time to transfer nuke and missile technology to DPRK partner and financier IRAN. It would be a mistake to ease pressure now. Let DPRK demonstrate dismantling of nuke and other WMD programs and the means of delivery, and when those conditions obtain start a gradual reduction of embargoes.

We have discovered that for Comrade their perception of reality is different from ours.
In a universe parallel, where Communism conquered the World, North Korea is a democratic government.

'civil servants / diplomats'??????????????? REALLY?

The only thing 'civil servants / diplomats' try to accomplish is justifying their phony baloney existence.

They are the same as weather forecasters.........always ready with pronouncements.............always avoiding the responsibility of being incorrect.

Can Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un's mutual friend, ex-basketball star Dennis Rodman, help pull off a diplomatic slam dunk for the rivals' planned summit?

Maybe. When Kim Jong-un studied in a Switzerland high-school he loved to play basketball:)

North Korea's Foreign Minister plans to visit Sweden and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström. It confirms a source for SVT's US correspondent Carina Bergfeldt.
According to the source a meeting between Foreign Minister Ri Yong-Ho and Margot Wallström (S) is scheduled to take place "shortly".
https://www.svt.se/nyheter/utrikes/nordkoreas-utrikesminister-till-sverige

Sweden is one of the few western countries with an embassy in the country and has said it is ready to assist in the diplomatic efforts for relaxation in the deep and long-standing conflict between North and South Korea.
Earlier this year, North Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister visited Sweden silently. Among other things, to discuss Sweden's role as the protection power for the United States, Canada and Australia, all of which lack diplomatic relations with the country.
