BREAKING NEWS! Washington Post

White House official who heard
Trump’s call with Ukraine leader testified that he was told to keep quiet

by Tom Hamburger, Carol D. Leonnig, Greg Miller and Ellen Nakashima

November 1, 2019 at 2:34 p.m. PDT

Several days after President Trump’s phone call with the leader of Ukraine, a top White House lawyer instructed a senior national security official not to discuss his grave concerns about the leaders’ conversation with anyone outside the White House, according to three people familiar with the aide’s testimony.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman testified that he received this instruction from John Eisenberg, the top legal adviser for the National Security Council, after White House lawyers learned July 29 that a CIA employee had anonymously raised concerns about the Trump phone call, the sources said.

The directive from Eisenberg adds to an expanding list of moves by senior White House officials to contain, if not conceal, possible evidence of Trump’s attempt to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to provide information that could be damaging to former vice president Joe Biden.

NSC Lawyer Who Placed Trump-Zelensky Call in Codeword-Protected Server Expected to Testify

NSC Lawyer Who Placed Trump-Zelensky Call in Codeword-Protected Server Expected to Testify.

by Jerry Lambe | 12:12 pm, October 31st, 2019

The National Security Council (NSC) attorney who decided to restrict access to President Donald Trump’s controversial phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenksy by placing it on a highly classified codename-only server is expected to testify before House impeachment investigators Monday.

The Washington Post on Wednesday evening reported that deputy White House counsel John Eisenberg was the first official to propose moving the evidence of the call to the separate server after being told about the content of it.

According to the report, the NSC’s top Ukraine expert Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman testified Tuesday that after hearing Trump pressure Zelensky to investigate a political opponent, he immediately reported the disturbing behavior to Eisenberg (the administration’s legal advisor on national security issues) and told him the president’s conduct was wrong.

As many say the constitution is written in stone, then they need to look at what Madison and Hamilton said about foreign interference. And I am sure if they do, then they must agree that the President must be impeached over his demand to the Ukrainian President to investigate the Bidens in exchange for military aid.

Madison: “Foreign powers will intermeddle in our affairs, and spare no expense to influence them. Persons having foreign attachments will be sent among us, and insinuated into our councils, in order to be made instruments for their purposes.”

“Foreign powers also will not be idle spectators,” Hamilton said. “They will interpose, the confusion will increase, and a dissolution of the Union will ensue.’”
“These Constitutional fears presaged the post-Constitutional panic about foreign influence that permeated the early years of the new country,”

Plus, “The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1789 were grounded in real fears that European powers — France, in particular — would conspire, or were conspiring, to undermine the new nation.”

********

It is also reported that Trump's absolutely wonderful secure wall, isn't so secure. Battery powered reciprocating saws, costing less than $100, can cut through the wall in minutes.

That is very odd, considering that France supported Washington's Continental Army to such a degree that it's arguable they would have lost otherwise, as they were fighting Great Britain, France's opponent. Relations didn't sour until 1794 when the U.S. refused to pay debts to post-monarchial France, claiming they were not owed to that government.

Trump's speedy impeachment process

It's been nearly one month since Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24.
Why it matters: It's remarkable how fast it has gotten off the ground. You can see how quickly the Ukraine phone call came out of nowhere to become the all-consuming impeachment topic — way faster than the impeachment inquiries into Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

By the numbers:

It was more than a year and a half between the Watergate break-in (June 17, 1972) and the House vote to authorize the impeachment inquiry into Nixon (Feb. 6, 1974).
Nixon resigned about six months later, in the face of certain impeachment and near-certain conviction and removal by the Senate.

It took nearly nine months between the first Washington Post report of an affair between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky (Jan. 21, 1998) and the House vote that authorized his impeachment inquiry (Oct. 8, 1998.)
The inquiry ran 73 days (10 weeks) until Clinton was impeached on Dec. 19, 1998 — just over two months.

He was acquitted by the Senate about two months after that — on Feb. 12, 1999, following a trial that ran for five weeks (37 days).

Now look at the Trump timeline:

It was less than a month and a half ago — Sept. 13 — when House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff announced he had issued a subpoena to acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire for a whistleblower complaint that the Intelligence Community Inspector General "determined to be credible and a matter of ‘urgent concern."

Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry just 11 days later.

Covfefe has won the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint to kick off Day 2 of the Breeders’ Cup.

The 3-year-old filly broke poorly but rallied under Joel Rosario to win by three-quarters of a length.

Sent off as the 3-2 favorite with a late surge of money by bettors, Covfefe paid $5 to win. She ran seven furlongs in 1:22.40.

Well, one Rumpism won.

House impeachment investigators have released the transcripts of closed-door depositions of Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and Michael McKinley, a former senior aide to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine described to House impeachment investigators a diplomatic corps under siege by President Donald Trump and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, saying she felt threatened by Trump’s posture toward her, according to a transcript of her testimony released Monday.

Marie Yovanovitch said efforts to smear her were being led by individuals whose goals and interests were not in line with those of the United States, and were instead motivated by politics. Yovanovitch also said she felt personally threatened by Trump’s suggestion to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that she was “going to go through some things” after he disparaged her to his counterpart in a July 25 phone call.

Two key witnesses in the House’s impeachment inquiry described sagging morale at the State Department as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other top officials refused to defend an ambassador under fire from President Donald Trump and his associates.

Marie Yovanovitch, who was recalled as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine in the spring, and Michael McKinley, a former Pompeo adviser, described deepening concern that foreign policy had been infected by officials seeking to boost Trump’s domestic political standing — in part by pressuring Ukraine’s government to investigate his Democratic opponents.

House impeachment investigators have released the transcripts of closed-door depositions of Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and Michael McKinley, a former senior aide to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Both of the officials testified as part of the impeachment inquiry into whether President Donald Trump inappropriately pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
