Darn it, I forgot it was Tuesday :(

. . Holidays will do that ... :(

[edit] it looks like you have a reprieve anyway ... it seems it will be a Wednesday outage again this week. It's a good thing that I don't gamble ... my bets don't pay off :(

Nope, regular Tuesday outage, just an hour later than usual.

. . Not to be picky but ... :), it was an hour and a half late! ... :( . It didn't start until after I had gone to bed so I didn't get to restore the stockpile on Bertie. He ran out of work and was empty for 2 hours until I awoke and I immediately fixed that when I realised of course.

No, it was a late Tuesday outage. Your bet did pay off :-)

. . Sadly I didn't back myself, I should have hedged my bets and restocked Bertie at least in part before hitting the sack ... :(

Well, the splitters were doing well for a while there, but they appear to have run in to problems again.
Ready-to-send was recovering, but now it's declining again.

Gee Wiz, just look at the long list of BLC files queued up on the Server Stats Page.

Are we near the end of Arecibo work?

. . Hi Steve,

. . If you are concerned about your RAC wait until you see what a guppi flood will do to it ... :(

. . [edit] {quaking in fear}

. . I just tried to count them. There are over 100 Blc05 tapes waiting to be split (I counted 124 but my screen is a little slow so I may have miscounted). The Filthy Fives are here in force. We are about to be overrun.

. . The gnarliest (slowest) Blc flavour of them all .... :(

Are we near the end of Arecibo work?

I suspect that to be true in the future. We have gone back over just about every Arecibo data tape multiple times now with the ever increasing precision accuracy of the newer apps now. Must have hit the point of diminishing returns by now.

And the flood of BLC data continues with more coming from the southern hemisphere Parkes Array probably this year. Probably should put the Arecibo data into archive and soldier on with the new data.

Eric told EVERYONE this was the future of the project. The small reprieve from going over the old data was to be short lived.

Of course in the end Arecibo work will vanish.
Arecibo is out of game and work will only be GBT sooner or later when the old tapes will be entirely reprocessed. I cannot guess when it will happen. It can be tomorrow or in a year for the little nothing I know.

But for this very moment we have 7 splitters working on Arecibo and 8 on GBT, therefore till this situation lasts I expect the ratio will stay the same.
Yes, this is kinda "Titanic has not sunk yet" point of view, but I think reflects the bare present waiting the moment when Arecibo will be history for SETI (unless the observatory will not be repaired, which I really will happen, as much as I feel related to it since I was I child and Seti@home had not yet even been remotely conceived).

Crunch on!

Closure? I thought the last I heard was they were going to fix it and bring it back on line? Have things changed in the last month or so since I was following this?

Nothing new that I have heard. The Observatory will remain open as long as it is funded. The damage will be repaired as funds and personnel allow. As with anything government funded ..... status will and can change fluidly with administrations.

. . OK I am a complete believer in Murphy's law so I am not surprised that, after I bad mouthed Blc05 WU's, this batch is behaving like the Blc04 batch that went through a few months ago and is now making a liar out of me.

. . So far they are running on my GPU in the same time as Arecibo tasks (as did the previous batch of Bloc04 tasks that I mentioned) and I am now waiting to see if they run equally as quick on the CPUs as their predecessors also did. I have no explanation for this behaviour, as they were still VLAR tasks, but I do love it ...

I had to go digging through tasks but did find some of the BLC5. Yes, they appear to run about as fast, maybe faster than the BLC4's. The few CPU tasks run very fast, 1/2 to 1/3 faster than regular BLC tasks. AR's are up in the mid 0.006 - 0.007 range.

. . The Blc14 variety of the oumuamua WUs were taking up to 60 odd mins, the previous batch of excitingly quick Blc04 tasks were taking 35 to 36 mins, these are taking 31 mins (on my i5-6600). And like the previous fast Blc04 tasks these are taking 3 mins on the 970s. My new favourite batch of GBT work. :)

. . If they know the recipe for these particular sweeties they should use it to bake ALL GBT tasks :)

Nothing that I have found yet. Just got up and looked at the crunchers and see they are running out their caches. Doubt we ever hear what or why the maintenance is happening again. Hope it is short like yesterday's.
